  • 21、Two British teachers have broken the world record for the longest journey in a tuk-tuk after pulling their failing vehicle for 43 miles. Richard Sears and Nick Gough traveled 37,500 kilometers around the world and passed through 37 countries. They did this to support grassroots education project in Africa,Asia and South America.

The pair, who set off from London, thought their expedition was over when the vehicle started to fail. When the tuk-tuk broke, they were only 43 miles from their destination. They decided to pull it the rest of the way. The tuk-tuk,which weighs 800 kilograms, was pulled in turns by Richard and Nick over three days. On arrival in Chepen, Peru, they discovered a mechanic who specialized in tuk-tuks and managed to fix it.

The pair were back on the road and aiming for their next goal. Along their journey they had to tackle deserts and jungles. They also survived close encounters with elephants in Uganda and Botswana and an accident in Malaysia. The greatest hardship on the tuk-tuk was the mountainranges lying in their path, including the Alps, the Himalayas and the Andes.

Nick and Richard uncovered some inspirational projects across Africa, Asia and South America. They witnessed firsthand the educational challenges facing these areas today. They joined street children in the slums of Cairo, Khartoum, Kampala, Mumbai and Phnom Penh. They visited Congolese refugees(难民)in camps in Eastern Burundi. They witnessed how education could free sex-workers in Delhi and victims of human trafficking in Nepal.

The pair established The Tuk Tuk Educational Trust, a UK registered charity. Talking about their motivation, Richard said, “The world's leaders have made a commitment to achieving universal primary education but, in spite of this pledge(誓言),over 57 million primary-aged children worldwide are still out of school; many more are in school, but still cannot access quality learning opportunities. ”

【1】Why did the two teachers travel the world?

    A.To entertain themselves.

    B.To support an education project.

C.To create a new world record.

    D.To challenge themselves.

【2】How far did the two teachers pull the tuk-tuk each day on average?

A.A little more than 8 miles.

    B.20 miles.

    C.43 miles.

    D.About 14 miles.

【3】What is the third paragraph mainly about?

A.How they realized their next goal.

B.Their exciting experience on the road.

C.The beautiful scenery of famous mountains.

D.The difficulties and dangers they faced in the journey.

【4】Which of the following best describes the two teachers?

    A.Courageous and responsible.

    B.Humorous and generous.

    C.Curious and brave.

    D.Efficient and honest.

  • 22、   Johannes Vermeer is such a quiet and introspective (内省的) artist that it took hundreds of years for anyone to notice he was a genius.

A major Vermeer exhibition opens this month at the Louvre in Paris, whose permanent collection includes his great painting of a woman absorbed in close, visually demanding work, The Lacemaker (about 1669-1670). Like other paintings by Vermeer, this image represents modern culture.

So attracted are today’s art lovers by Vermeer that it was thought shocking when a recent survey found that 82% of Americans can’t name who painted The Girl with the Pearl Earring. Well, maybe they don’t go to the movies much.

It is not true to say he was forgotten—that would suggest he was famous in his lifetime. He was not. Vermeer was one more painter among the many who worked for money in the Dutch Republic in the 17th century. He was not a star like Rembrandt. He obviously took himself and his art seriously. His self-referential painting The Art of Painting proves that. Even though he worked all his life in Delft, he painted only 35 known works and left his family poor when he died in 1675 at the age of 43.

It is fitting that Paris is celebrating Vermeer, because it was the French avant-garde (先锋派) in the 19th century who saved him from being completely forgotten. Compare his paintings Woman in Blue Reading a Letter or The Little Street with, say, Edouard Manet’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergere (1882) or Camille Pissarro’s The Boulevard Montmartre at Night (1897) and it is easy to see why the art of Vermeer found its natural audience in Parisian bohemia. (放荡不羁的艺术家)

All these artists are likely to have known about and admired Vermeer due to the efforts of the critic Thore-Burger, a veteran of the 1848 revolution.

Vermeer’s rediscovery is part of the history of modern French art. Vermeer is not only a great artist. He is a great modern artist.

1What can we know about Vermeer from Paragraph 4?

A.He was well-known when he was alive.

B.He gained a good fortune for his family.

C.He didn’t witness the popularity of his works.

D.He considered painting as a way to have fun.

2Who made a great contribution to introducing Vermeer to other artists?

    A.Rembrandt.

    B.His family.

    C.American art lovers.

    D.Thore-Burger.

3Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.Rediscovery of Vermeer

    B.Anecdotes about Vermeer

    C.Great Modern French Art

D.The Tough Way to Success in Art

  • 23、Slowness has been a sweeping trend in sustainability. Slow food celebrates local produce and traditional cooking methods; slow fashion is made with a focus on people and the planet. You may have even heard of the slow city, a campaign to restore local cultures and turn cities back to their natural environments.

Slow design developed from the larger slow movement. Although the term was only recently introduced, the idea of thoughtful design looks back to a time when buildings and furniture were made with great craftsmanship (手艺) and by hand-before the mass-produced throwaway furniture took over. You can think of the term “slow” as a celebration of timelessness: both the timelessness of a piece and the timelessness of the relationship between that piece and its owner.

One example of slow design today is what’s been dubbed the brown furniture revival (复兴). Brown furniture refers to the heavy wooden furnishings that were popular in your grandparents’ day but suddenly fell out of style at the turn of the century. Brown furniture is often associated with dark woods, such as trees like mahogany, walnut, and teak, that take decades to reach maturity and true craftsmanship to transform into functional pieces.

Today’s furniture industry is dominated by the $13.1 billion-and-growing global ready-to-assemble(RTA) furniture market. RTA furniture is usually constructed from low-quality fiberboard, which lasts a small part of traditional furniture’s lifespan (寿命).The weight of furniture landfilled in 2018 was 9. 7 million tons, 4. 5 times what was landfilled in 1960.

In a less direct way, the idea of timelessness also lends itself to a lower environmental impact. Besides their demonstrated physical durability, slow materials and design are meant to outlive trends and never be thrown out simply because they’re out of style.

As second-hand shopping becomes more appealing to today’s young generation-because of its low environmental impact and affordability-the brown furniture of yesteryear is making a comeback.

【1】Why is the first paragraph written?

    A.To explain a new term.

B.To present the topic of the text.

    C.To provide background information.

D.To highlight the importance of slowness.

【2】What does the underlined word “dubbed” mean in paragraph 3?

    A.Known as.

    B.Mistaken for.

    C.Compared to.

    D.Connected with.

【3】What can be inferred about RTA furniture?

    A.It is out of date.

    B.It has a long lifespan.

    C.It is heavy and expensive.

D.It has bad effects on the environment.

【4】What is good news for the brown furniture revival?

    A.Grandparents are buying new furniture.

B.The brown furniture will soon be mass-produced.

C.The young generation favors second-hand shopping.

D.Materials for slow design furniture are more available.

  • 24、   Exciting new research suggests there could be living things in the clouds above Venus, whose orbit brings it closer to the Earth than any other planets. A study of Venus's atmosphere shows a type of gas is in its atmosphere. The gas, on the Earth, is only produced by very small creatures. If such creatures are found on Venus, it might be the first evidence of life existing anywhere else in the universe.

Scientists found the gas in thick clouds about 35 miles above Venus's equator. On the Earth, the gas is produced by special forms of life that live in airless environments such as swamps and inside animals' guts. It can also be made in factories but neither explanation helps scientists to understand what the gas is doing on Venus.

To get to the bottom of the mystery, the scientists have now made their data public in the hope that others may be able to find a clue that they have missed. Professor Greaves explained that the gas might be produced by some non-living natural process that we haven't yet discovered, but for now, the idea of life on Venus has to be considered. She added, “In my whole career, I have been interested in the search for life elsewhere in the universe, so I'm just blown away that this is even possible. We are sincerely encouraging other people to tell us what we might have missed. This is how science works.” If scientists on the Earth are unable to find an explanation, then a future mission to Venus might be needed to prove whether or not life exists there. The US space agency NASA is already planning a exploration that would float on a balloon through the clouds of Venus, and this could launch sometime in the 2030s.

【1】What can we know about Venus according to paragraph 1?

    A.The thickness of its clouds.

B.The distance of it to the Earth.

C.The result of a study of its atmosphere.

D.The exact temperature of its atmosphere.

【2】Why have the scientists made their data public?

    A.To announce their successful experience.

B.To change the wrong conclusion before.

C.To prove they have found life on Venus.

D.To hope others can help find the truth.

【3】What does the underlined phrase “blown away” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Impressed.

    B.Swept out.

    C.Thrown away.

    D.Shot.

【4】What's the best title for the text?

A.Can a Kind of New Gas Be Found on Venus?

B.Is There a Possibility of Life on Venus?

C.Is What the Scientists Said Right?

    D.Can Humans Live on Venus?
