    FACELESS

    by Alyssa B. Sheinmel

This is an amazing book about a girl named Maisie, who gets in an accident, and ends up having a face transplant. Part of Maisie’s face got burnt off in a fire, so now she has her cheeks and nose replaced by a different girl’s cheeks and nose. However, if you think about it, the idea seems quite scary. All in all, I really enjoyed this book, and it had me hanging on its every word.

WE ARE ALL MADE OF MOLECULES

    by Susin Nielsen

The story focuses on two main characters, Stewart and Ashley. Despite missing his mother, Stewart decides to make a new life with Ashley when he and his dad move into her house. Ashley doesn’t like Stewart for his personality, but things turn even more complicated when a schoolmate, Jared, enters their lives. I LOVE this book because it teaches us that if we all put aside all of our differences, we can work together to solve problems in the world, no matter how big or small the problem might be.

    HOUSE OF WINDOWS

  • 23、   Those with closed minds refused to consider any contradictory facts, and they proceed with their planned course of action, full speed ahead, with their “minds made up” and tightly shut. As an illustration, consider the situation in 1986, prior to the space shuttle Challenger’s disatrous launch that killed all seven astronauts aboard, there was a heated telephone debate between two engineers from the company that produced the shuttle booster rockets and the top officials of NASA (the federal government’s space agency). The engineers insisted that the flight was too risky because of freezing temperature at the Florida launch site. They explained that some of the seals on the fuel tanks were not designed to withstand such low temperatures and might leak under pressure, thus endangering the craft and crew.

Despite the pleas to stop the flight, officials at NASA overruled the engineers, who were best qualified to make judgments about the complex technical problems of space flight. What caused the officials to ignore the engineers? Several flights had already been postponed, and it would not look good to postpone another. It would be bad public relations to disappoint the crowds of people and news reporters waiting for the launch. Top government officials were ready to appear on the national television and take the credit for another safe flight. As a result, with their minds absolutely closed to the facts presented by the engineers, NASA officials ordered the Challenger to take off. Seventy-three seconds later, the spacecraft was enveloped in flame.

Incredibly, seventeen years later, the lesson of the Challenger disaster was repeated. In 2003, the space shuttle Columbia broke apart while re-entering the earth’s atmosphere, killing another crew of seven. During the shuttle’s liftoff, a piece of foam insulation(泡沫隔热材料) had broken off, hitting the shuttle's wing at five hundred miles per hour. Lower-level engineers at NASA begged for photographs of the Columbia in orbit, which might have shown the extent of the damage, but their closed-minded superiors ignored their requests. It was the damage caused by the 1.7 pound chunk of insulation that doomed the Columbia.

There is no virtue in ignoring contradictory facts and “sticking to your guns” when the course taken shows all the signs of being the wrong one. Closed minds are especially noticeable in political campaigns and debates. Many people line up to support one candidate or another and won’t listen to any facts presented by the opposing candidate.

All those with an open mind say is this: “I don’t know everything, so I’d better keep my mind, eyes, and ears open to any new facts that may come along.” The world would be a much better and safer place if everyone had this attitude.

1Which of the following brought about the disastrous launch of the Challenger?

    A.Its crew B.The engineers

C.The fuel tanks’ seals D.The size of its rocket

2When the engineers appealed to stop the launch of the Challenger, the government officials ___________.

    A.postponed the flight at once.

B.made judgments about the complex technical problems.

C.announced the news on national television.

D.ordered to launch the Challenger as scheduled.

3What could be inferred from Paragraph 3?

A.The Columbia disaster was impossible to foresee.

B.Engineers were to blame for the Columbia’s explosion.

C.The Columbia disaster could have been avoided.

    D.The Columbia was deliberately damaged.

4What does the underlined phrase “sticking to your guns” in Paragraph 4 mean?

A.Holding firm to your own opinion.

B.Remaining and firing your gun at enemies.

    C.Strengthening your status.

    D.Keeping an open mind.

5What is the main purpose of the passage?

A.To inform readers about what an open mind is.

B.To entertain readers with two stories of tragedies in space.

C.To persuade readers to keep an open mind.

D.To criticize what NASA officials had done in aerospace history.

6How does the author support the argument of the passage?

A.By stating arguments. B.By giving examples.

C.By explaining statistical data. D.By providing research result.

  • 24、EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) they arrived before polling stations even opened, dressed for the school day in striped ties and blazers, dress slacks and tartan skirts, book bags over their shoulders and, for the first time in British history, ballot (选票) cards in hands on September 18.

Scotland’s experiment of allowing more than 109,000 Scottish teenagers aged 16 to 17 took part in the Scottish independence referendum (公民投票), in which Scotland finally decided not to become independent.

The age group only made up a small part of the 4.29 million total voters, but they have “demonstrated how the youngest voters can be some of the most enthusiastic in a mature democracy”, commented The Associated Press. Casting their ballots, they were “proud and passionate” to help their nation decide whether to break away from the UK after 307 years in union.

At age 16, Scottish residents are allowed to join the military, get married, and work. Eighteen is the legal drinking age, as well as the UK’s voting age. But in 2013, Scottish law was changed to allow 16- and 17-year-olds in Scotland to vote in the referendum. The government pushed for the change because “younger voters are more likely to vote with their hearts, not their heads—and embrace fundamental change by voting for the pro-independence Yes Scotland campaign”, NBC News said.

But when the decision was handed down, some worried that high school students might not be as informed as adult voters. However, many experts said that assumption was wrong.

Professor Jan Eichhorn of the University of Edinburgh insisted that Scottish teenagers were as likely to read newspaper articles and campaign materials as their parents. They would simply get these resources through social media.

“There’s no evidence to suggest that they’re less capable than adults of voting, from a research point of view,” Eichhorn told NPR.

Scotland’s move to let younger teenagers vote in the referendum has led to a discussion about whether the voting age ought to be lowered to 16, both in the UK and the US.

“By 16, most people have about as stable an ideology (思想意识) as they are going to get,” Professor Jason Brennan of Georgetown University wrote for CNN, arguing that the US should also think about allowing younger US citizens to vote.

【1The Scottish independence referendum was held on Sept. 18 ______.

    A. to encourage youngsters to be concerned with politics

    B. to lower the minimum voting age to 16 for the referendum

    C. to decide whether Scotland would become independent from the UK

    D. to elect who would be the new leader of Scotland

【2According to the passage, we can learn ______.

    A. Scotland gained its independence from the UK eventually.

    B. It is possible for the USA to lower the voting age to 16 in the future.

    C. All the people in Scotland thought highly of the government’s decision to lower the voting age to 16.

    D. Scottish teenagers aged 16 are allowed to join the military, get married, work and drink alcohol now.

【3What does the underlined word “embrace” (in para.4) probably mean?

    A. Admit to B. Object to

    C. Know about D. Approve of

【4What is Jan Eichhorn’s opinion of the Scottish teenagers aged 16 to 17?

    A. They are as informed and capable as adults of voting.

    B. They make no difference to the voting result.

    C. They are too enthusiastic to make informed decisions.

    D. They are unwilling to be involved in the decision of the country’s future.
