22、By age 12, Gavin Svenson had a strong interest in insects. He couldn’t get enough of digging for them, watching them, and collecting them. He remembers that his parents patiently indulged (纵容) his passion for insects even as he stored them in the fridge of their home.
Around that age, Svenson saw an interview with an insectologist on TV and thought,“Whoa! You can do this as a job?” Clearly, yes, which explains how he ended up as the curator (馆长) at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
Deep interests that present at an early age often stay with us throughout life, says Susan Newman, a social psychologist.
So how do you help your teenager find their passion? Parents can be patient and supportive without overdoing it. Svenson feels his parents found the night balance. “My parents were super supportive, but it was mostly me driving it,” says Svenson. Though his parents had some worries about his narrow choice of a career path, they never tried to force him to change it.
Teens are likely to try lots of new activities and may drop them almost as quickly as they pick them up. So how can parents know when it’s a true passion and when not? Newman describes a passion as “an interest or activity that you can’t get enough of; it keeps you coming back for more.” Newman says, “As a parent, you’ll notice that you can’t get their attention because they are totally absorbed.”
But what if the passion that’s absorbing your child is not the one you would have picked for them? “Parents have to realize that their children are separate human beings with interests, likes, and dislikes hat can be very different from their own,” says Newman. “You have to let your teen take the lead in what interests them.”
Now a parent himself, Svenson concurs. “Never lower your kids’ interests. Kids are smart, and they have a great ability to form their own opinion.”

23、 In San Francisco, where the number of the homeless has risen by 7% in the last decade, a non-profit organization is putting bathrooms on wheels and driving them to those in need. The group, Lava Mae, is improving retiring city buses and bringing them into different neighborhoods, currently providing about 200 showers each week.
Doniece Sandoval, the founder of Lava Mae, first became interested in the issue in 2012, when she passed a young woman under an overpass near the San Francisco Design Center who was repeating to herself that she'd never get clean. 'It made me wonder what her chances were, ' said Sandoval, who was then inspired to research exactly how many public shower stalls(淋浴间)existed in the city. Her findings were disheartening.
So Lava Mae came together when she heard the city would be retiring cold city buses. 'I told myself, I want those buses!' she said.
Each bus has two private bathrooms, one of which is wheelchair accessible. Along with the basic shower, sink and toilet, the spaces have soft lighting, digital controls for water, and hair dryers.
'Though you're only going to be on the bus for 20 minutes or so, it's 20 minutes of complete privacy,' Said Sandoval.
The buses are parked near agencies that already serve the homeless. 'If we can reduce the amount of time people have to run from place to place to get essential services, we'll be able to make things better, ' said Sandova.
What's next for lava Mae? The group is starting a program so that others can mimic their process. 'What we're hoping to do is to get people to follow what we do, so they can recreate it.' she said.

24、Have you heard there are animals in your head? There are four, in fact: an elephant, a guard dog, an owl and a sooty (a black-feathered bird). They constantly chat to each other. If one gets a bit over-excited, that is to say, if the guard dog senses a threat and starts barking loudly, then the rest can't communicate with each other, and thatapos’s not good news. You might start to feel stressed or anxious or sad.
What the animals represent in the brain and what those parts of the brain are responsible for are the subjects of a new podcast (播客) teaching primary school-age children about their mental health and how to look after it.
The teachers of these lessons are pretty young, too. They're sixth-graders, 12 years old. They're pupils at Woollahra Public School in Sydney, who have been working with a social company, Grow Your Mind, to create the podcast.
“I used to hear a lot that the kids need to be more adaptable,” says Nicole Molloy, the school's head teacher. “We don't say that they need to be able to do math problems; we always teach them how to complete math problems. So why shouldn't we be doing that for mental health?”
A selection of older children are “well-being leaders” for the school and meet with Molloy once a week to talk about students' well-being. That helps to keep both the older and younger children very interested in the topic.
Although there's no data yet to quantify the effect this approach has had, Molloy says there are noticeable differences. Children now use the language and concepts they've learned about their mental health in everyday conversations. Teachers said that the students appear to have done well with the stress of the pandemic, too.
Focusing on mental health doesn't harm their studies, either. In fact, Molloy argues it improves them. “Our program proves it,” she says.
【1】What do the animals in the first paragraph refer to?
A.Pupils' imaginary friends.
B.Different parts of the brain.
C.Popular animals among pupils.
D.Heated topics for children's biology classes.
【2】Who gives lessons in the podcast?
A.The company's manager.
B.The school's head teacher.
C.Older primary school students.
D.Experts from Grow Your Mind.
【3】What does Molloy expect the podcast to do?
A.Allow kids to practice public speaking.
B.Improve kids' performance on math tests.
C.Teach kids ways to deal with mental problems.
D.Provide kids with a chance to show their talents.
【4】What does Molloy say about the podcast?
A.It is desirable.
B.It is harmful.
C.It is unnoticeable.
D.It is humorous.
25、How often do you let other people’s nonsense change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, impolite waiter, rude boss, or an insensitive employee ______ your day?
One day I was in a taxi and we headed ______ the airport. We were driving in the ______ lane when suddenly a black car drove out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his ______, slid sideways, and at the very last moment our car stopped and ______ the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car looked around and started ______ at us.
My taxi driver just ______ and waved at the guy. And I mean he was really ______. So I asked, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!”
This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call “The Law of the Garbage Truck”. He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of ______, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage ______ up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they’ll dump it on ______. Don’t take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.
Believe me. You’ll be ______. Don’t take their garbage and ______ it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets. Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with ______. The mark of your success is how quickly you can refocus on what’s ______ in your life. Roy Baumeister, a psychology researcher from Florida State University, found in his extensive research that you ______ bad things more often than good things in your life. You store the bad memories more easily, and you ______ them more frequently.
So love the people who treat you right. Ignore the ones who don’t. Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you ______ it!
When you follow “The Law of the Garbage Truck”, you take back control of your life. You make room for the good by ______ go of the bad. Have a Garbage-Free Day! Have a marvelous, garbage-free day! The seeds you plant today ______ the harvest you reap tomorrow.
