  • 22、What does fear make you do? When I feel afraid, I tend to be more hesitant in following my usual patterns. Perhaps it is a strange-looking person hiding nearby or violent dogs barking at me that causes that emotion. Notice that I am just a normal-sized woman whose view of something as dangerous causes me to change. What could the earth’s largest land mammal (哺乳动物) possibly be afraid of? Many, terrifying things. African elephants have totally altered their behavior patterns just to stay alive.

What, you may ask, could possibly bring a threat to these giants? This question can be answered in one simple word: poachers (偷猎者)! They are killing elephants by the tens of thousands. And what is the reason behind all of this killing? Elephant tusks (象牙). These long teeth grow outside the elephants’ mouths throughout their lives. Both males and females have them and use them for feeding, digging and fighting. But those poachers see their tusks as money in their pockets.

According to CITES, Africa will lose one-fifth of its elephants by 2023 if the continuing killing is not stopped. How are elephants dealing with? As a human, I change my behavior when I become afraid, and now we are learning that elephants do the same.

From 2002 to 2009, poaching (illegal hunting and killing) levels were mild, but from 2010 to 2012, the levels increased so violently that a crisis situation occurred. In an attempt to save elephants, several organizations, including Save the Elephants and the Kenya Wildlife Service, attached GPS collars to elephants. They then tracked the elephants’ movements and analyzed the data. Findings show that elephants have become more active at night in locations where the threat of poaching is greatest.

Elephants began migrating and feeding more during nighttime hours and hiding more during the day. Additionally, they have been fleeing from some areas in large numbers to the safety of national parks and protection. With elephants trying to save themselves, how can we not help? Take a simple approach: Stop poaching by not buying ivory products.

  • 23、A new study has found that safety equipment could prevent more than 40 percent of crashes in which tractor-trailers rear-end (追尾) other vehicles. The survey also found that when the rear-end crashes happened, safety systems were able to cut speeds by over 50 percent, resulting in fewer injuries and less damage.

The survey was a project of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a research group supported by companies that insure owners of motor vehicles. The institute’s Eric Teoh did the study. He examined crash records from 62 trucking companies that operate tractor-trailers or other large trucks. He found about 2000 crashes. Those accidents involved vehicles that travelled more than 3.2 billion kilometers from 2017 to 2019.

The safety systems use cameras, radar and other sensors to watch the roadway. Some are designed to warn drivers of dangers, while more complex systems will stop the trucks.

Trucks with crash warning systems reduced rear crashes by 44 percent, while automatic emergency braking systems cut rear crashes by 41 percent, the study found. The institute called on the federal government to require such systems on new large trucks. It noted that many truck operators are already adding emergency braking on their own. The study found that trucks equipped with a crash warning system had 22 percent fewer crashes than those without the technology. Trucks with emergency braking system had 12 percent fewer crashes.

Teoh said the findings could be valuable for trucking companies and drivers who are considering whether to get safety devices on their next vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a statement it is nearly finished with its own study on driver assist technology on heavy vehicles. It has been urging the voluntary use of systems such as emergency braking.

In the United States, there are currently no requirements for either system. In Europe, automatic emergency braking with forward collision warning has been required by the European Union on most new large trucks since late 2013, the institute said.

【1】Why is safety equipment advised to be used?

    A.To completely avoid rear-end crashes.

    B.To reduce injuries and damage.

    C.To prevent all traffic accidents.

    D.To travel further more comfortably.

【2】How did Teoh carry out the survey?

    A.By interviewing drivers.

    B.By consulting some companies.

    C.By comparing different trucks.

    D.By studying the data collected.

【3】What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?

    A.The benefit of safety systems.

    B.The introduction of the study.

    C.The types of safety systems.

    D.The principle of warning systems.

【4】What can be inferred about the emergency braking systems?

A.They are required to be used in America.

B.The European Union urges all drivers to use them.

C.Some truck drivers are volunteering to use them.

D.They will be used by all drivers.

  • 24、With fashion magazines, advertisements and teenage icons sporting the “latest and greatest” trend, there’s a lot of pressure on teenagers to fit the mold. For decades, teenage and adolescents have used fashion as a social weapon. Bullies will pick out peers that aren’t wearing the best brands of clothing and criticize them.

Dr. Jensen, a professor at Western Illinois University, says there are some tell-tale signs that your child might be a victim of fashion bullying. They’ll become picky about what clothes they wear and will be very demanding when you take them shopping.

Dr. Mary Bousted, the general secretary of The Association of Teachers and Lecturers said, “Bully of this kind can be insidious (阴险的), and it can just be a look that a child is given. Advertising and marketing have made our society increasingly image-conscious and our children are suffering the consequences. Schools should be places where all children feel equal, but it is virtually impossible for schools to protect their pupils from the tough aspects of these commercial influences.” Andy Cranham, a teacher at City of Bristol College said, “The need to belong in groups is paramount to young learners and exclusion is something they see as the end of the world.”

What Not to Wear, a popular television show, features fashion bullying as entertainment. Each week Stacy and Clinton make fun of a fashion victim, criticizing her appearance, and both verbally and literally laughing at her wardrobe.

I think beauty is probably at the base of fashion, and the problem comes when so called “stylish” people start defining beauty in a way that excludes other people. Why wait for a trend in order to wear something in its wake? If you’re able to wear something with confidence, YOU will be the one starting a trend.

【1】In which way is fashion used as a social weapon according to Para. 1?

A.The best brands of clothing gains popularity.

B.Teenagers suffer a lot to fit the fashion mold.

C.Peers not wearing the best brand will be attacked.

D.Teens protect themselves by wearing the best trend.

【2】Which of the following may Dr Mary Bousted agree?

A.All students are equally treated at schools.

B.It’s alright for the society to be image-conscious.

C.Children are well protected from commercial influences.

D.Advertising and marketing are to blame for fashion anxiety.

【3】What does “paramount” in para. 3 mean?

    A.Compulsory.

    B.Important.

    C.Luxurious.

    D.Fashionable.

【4】What’s the author’s idea about fashion and beauty?

    A.Confidence is beauty.

    B.Fashion is entertainment.

    C.Beauty is based on fashion.

    D.Beauty is excluding some people.
