    Get outdoors.

Did you know that the average person only spends four hours a week playing outdoors? 【2】. Why not visit a local park, forest or beach? If none of the above is easily accessible to you explore the woods of your own neighborhood. Just trying an eco-friendly project in gardens like zero-waste-bird-feeding is also a good choice.

    【3】.

Many people find that connecting to the natural environment makes them happy for a much longer time, compared with crazy shopping, which only brings temporary excitement but, more likely, lasting harm to the planet.

It’s no accident that meditation (冥思) apps and videos are often themed with rain, forests and calming ocean sounds. 【4】, what’s the point of paying to do it online? Why not challenge yourself to connect with the earth by simply noticing what’s around you?

    Save the planet by “plogging”!

Plogging simply means collecting litter as you jog, or walk around your community. Why not host a plogging event of your own? 【5】. You can also get some great exercise at the same time. Plus, you become more mindful of the trash we throw away every day, and the difference we can make to the earth.

  • 22、Not only does the use of plastic water bottles hurt your wallet, but it also causes pollution, wastes energy, and surprisingly wastes water. Only 23% of the plastic in America ends up in recycling bins, meaning over $ 1 billion worth of plastic is treated as rubbish a year. Recently, Skipping Rocks Lab has invented a kind of water bottle called Ooho.

It’s a kind of convenient, clear water bottle that can either be drunk or eaten. To drink it, you can either get rid of the membrane(膜)or tear a hole in the membrane with your teeth to pour the water into your mouth. To eat it, you simply put the whole bottle in your mouth. It’s completely tasteless so you needn’t worry about any taste.

It aims for large outdoor events where tons of plastic bottles are used and frequently left behind as litter. Too much plastic is sure to do harm to the environment, which could account for the purpose of such a new invention.

The team has been working for the past two years to develop the technology and materials that are needed to produce Ooho. The price for an only bubble(泡状物)or a unit of bubbles hasn’t been decided yet, but it costs about two cents to create a unit, which is cheaper than plastic bottles. The team has also been selling Ooho water bottles in London for the past six months.

Ooho is catching many people’s attention and has raised over $1 million in only three days. It’s mostly being sold at events at the moment to interest the buyers while the production machine is getting up and running. It’s quickly making a rise, so keep an eye out for these bottles of the future.

【1】How is most plastic in America dealt with?

A.It is thrown away as litter.

B.It is reused as new energy.

C.It is buried under the ground.

D.It is applied to new technology.

【2】What can we know about the Ooho?

A.It plans to be sold at a very low price.

B.It has some advantages over plastic bottles.

C.It has taken the place of plastic bottles in London.

D.Proper materials of making Ooho are hard to find.

    【3】What’s the author’s attitude towards Ooho’s future?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Uninterested.

    C.Positive.

    D.Worried.

    【4】Who might be target readers?

    A.Scientists.

    B.Experts.

    C.Environmentalists.

    D.The public.

  • 23、   When you think of the icy Arctic Ocean, do you picture cold blue waters, on which float (漂浮) icebergs home to animals and fish not seen elsewhere on the planet? Think again, or rather add 300 billion pieces of plastic (塑料) to your picture. That's the amount of plastic that scientists believe is floating around the Arctic Ocean. Most of the plastic is in the area to the east of Greenland and north of Scandinavia.

Where did it come from? After all, the lands near the Arctic are not really full of people. It turns out that ocean currents are carrying plastic thrown into the ocean all the way to the Arctic. An ocean current is an unending movement of sea water from one point to another. It is caused by several things including heat from the Sun, wind and movement of the Earth.

Many of these plastic pieces seem to have travelled for years before reaching the Arctic. This was worked out by scientists studying the plastic problem after they observed the condition of the pieces. While much plastic floats on top of the water, a lot also may be on the sea floor.

Plastic has been widely used for 60 years on Earth and our careless throwing of plastic things is slowly turning the once perfectly clean Arctic into a dangerous place. Unlike food waste and plant waste, plastic doesn't break down so easily. In fact the United States Environment Protection Organization reports that “every bit of plastic ever made still exists”.

What's the effect? Seabirds, sea turtles and other ocean creatures could get hurt and die when they accidentally swallow plastic. Plastic waste affects fishing, affecting people who earn money through fishing. Plastics can let out dangerous poisons (毒物) into the water. These may be swallowed by fish, and when these fish are caught and eaten by people or bigger animals, they could get poisoned too!

【1】What can we learn from the passage?

A.The Arctic Ocean is heavily polluted.

B.The plastic is mostly in the area in the east of Greenland.

C.An ocean current is just caused by the movement of the earth.

D.Much more plastic floats on top of the water.

【2】Which of the following doesn't contribute to the plastic ocean?

A.Humans throw away plastic things at will.

B.Ocean currents carry plastic things everywhere.

C.Plastic can let out harmful things into the water.

D.Plastic is hard to break down.

【3】What does the underlined word “swallow” in the last Paragraph mean?

    A.Break down.

    B.Take in.

    C.Accept.

    D.Touch.

【4】What's the best title of the text?

A.Are Men to Blame for Plastic Ocean?

    B.Arctic Ocean and Its Future!

    C.Is Plastic Harmful?

    D.Arctic Ocean or Plastic Ocean?

  • 24、 Today just as technology changed the face of industry, farms have experienced an “agricultural revolution”. On the farm of today, machines provide almost all the power.

One of the most important benefits will be the farm computer. A few forward-looking farmers are already using computers to help them run their farms more efficiently. The computers help them keep more accurate(精确的) records so they can make better decisions on what crops to plant, how much livestock (家畜) to buy, when to sell their products, and how much profit they can expect. Many computer companies have been developing special computer programs just for farmers. Programs are being written for pig producers, grain farmers, potato farmers, and dairy farmers. In the future, farmers will be able to purchase computer programs made to their needs. Because of the growing importance of computers on the farm, students at agricultural colleges are required to take computer classes in addition to their normal agricultural courses. There can be no doubt that farmers will rely on computers even more in the future. While the old-time farm depended on horse power, and modern farms depend on machine power, farms of the future will depend on computer power.

Another technological advance which is still in the experimental stage is the robot, a real “mechanized hired hand” that will be able to move and, in some ways, think like a human being. Agricultural engineers believe that computer-aided robots will make shocking changes in farming before the end of the century. Unlike farmers of the present, farmers of the future will find that many day-to-day tasks will be done for them. Scientists are now developing robots that will be able to shear (修剪) sheep, drive tractors, and harvest fruit. Even complex jobs will be done by robots. For example, in order to milk their cows, farmers must first drive them into the barn, then connect them to the milking machines, watch the machines, and disconnect them when they are finished. In the future, this will all be done by robots. In addition, when the milking is completed, the robots will automatically check to make sure that the milk is pure. The complete change of the farm is far in the future, but engineers expect that some robots will be used before long.

【1】According to the passage, computers can not help farmers decide _______.

    A. how much money they can earn from their products

    B. whether to plant a certain kind of crop

    C. what livestock to raise

    D. when to sell their products

2Which of the following statements is true?

    A. Farmers in the future will depend totally on computers.

    B. Farmers mainly use machines on their farms at present.

    C. Both computers and robots have been in use on today’s farms.

    D. Students at agricultural colleges needn’t take their normal agricultural courses.

3What is the best title for the whole passage?

    A. Computer, Farmers’ Best Friend

    B. Farmers in The Future

    C. The Agricultural Revolution

    D. Computers and Robots

How big should a business team be? It is an enormously important issue for companies. Teams that are too small may _________ the skills required to get the job done; teams that are too big may be impossible to co-ordinate.

Similar trade-offs may apply when it comes to firms as a whole. Start-ups are often short of staff. The founders must play a host of different _________, from obtaining finance to product development and marketing, for which they may not be equally suited. But the _________ is that they can have highly collaborative working environments.

People who have worked for start-ups say the culture changes when the company reaches a certain _________. Patty McCord, formerly of Netflix, referred to the “stand-on-a-chair number”—the biggest group that can easily hear the boss _________ them.

Robin Dunbar, an anthropologist (人类学家) at Oxford University, has done a lot of work on primate groups. His argument is that the size of the group is linked to the size of the brain. With their large brains, humans can cope with larger bands. A larger social group has many advantages, _________ greater protection and specialisation.

Whereas 150 is sometimes referred to as the “Dunbar number”, the academic himself in fact refers to a range of _________. He observes that humans tend to have five intimate friends, 15 or so good friends, around 50 social friends and 150-odd acquaintances.

Running a larger network can be difficult. So much time is needed to maintain relationships that their quality inevitably _________. The armed forces have spent millennia experimenting with unit size. A Roman centurion (百人队长) oversaw 100. The modern American army company has 180 members. Britain’s equivalent numbers 120.

These are rough estimates, rather than rigid figures. But it is striking that many group activities seem to be _________ a Dunbar number. The Special Air Service, Britain’s elite fighting unit, has four-man patrols; when your life depends on it, you need to have absolute ____________ in your colleagues. As a result, such groups are limited in size.

Sports-team sizes ____________ the playing area. There are five players in a basketball side and six in ice hockey; outdoors there are 11 players in football and cricket teams, and 7-15 in the various forms of rugby. Perhaps this is the optimal size for coaching purposes, or perhaps crowds would ____________ to distinguish individual players if teams were larger.

Small work teams may also tend towards these two size ranges. “If you want a committee to ____________ something, limit it to four to five people,” says Mr Dunbar. “But to brainstorm in a meeting, you need 12-15.” Many companies use “agile” teams which draw employees from across the company; they tend to have between five and nine members.

The modern company may settle on a ____________ with a small group of “core” workers and a larger group of contract workers. The result may be more ____________ within the core staff but the non-core staff may be less well treated. The small core teams may work effectively. The big question will be the effect on morale of those outside those teams.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When my father doesn’t answer the phone, I don’t think anything of it. He’s 75 years old and doesn’t always want to talk.

This was what I told myself when I called him and he didn’t answer one Wednesday afternoon in January earlier this year. I was in Thailand for a trip. It’s sunny there but in Ohio, where my dad lives, it’s cold and snowy.

I tried calling my dad two days later. Again, no answer. I was starting to feel uneasy. Thankfully, I didn’t have enough time to worry because he immediately called back. But his voice was dry and weak. He said he had fallen down and had been on the floor for days. He was calling from the floor.

I immediately used another phone to call my sister Kristel. When she’s already in the car, I hung up with her and continued talking with my dad. I didn’t want to hang up, because I didn’t know if he had a heart attack or a stroke. What I did know was that I wished I wasn’t so far away.

My dad spent the next three days in the hospital. The doctors didn’t know what had happened. The tests they ran didn’t tell them anything because he was on the floor for too long.

Besides her work time, my sister was the one sitting next to my dad for hours in the hospital taking care of him. She had always been the one on the front line of his care but it’s becoming apparent that she’s burning out.

For most of my life, I’ve not taken on any kind of family responsibility. I’m the youngest. I studied abroad. I vacationed in faraway lands and I was always too busy to come home. But my sister Kristel, who is 10 years older than me, has always been responsible. As she grew up, she helped our parents on the farm. Ever since she was in high school, Kristel has always had multiple jobs. But when my dad fell and was rushed to the hospital, I decided to spend more time with him.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

When I eventually arrived at the hospital, my dad was still lying on bed.
