21、 As a child, Obaida Omar fled the enemy's invasion of her native Afghanistan, walking for weeks through the mountains.
"During the day we had to hide in the villages because of the bombing," said Omar, now a mother of three and Islamic Center of Rochester board member. "I walked on dead bodies. And up till today, it still troubles me a lot when I think back."
Omar, who moved to the U.S. around 13, provided first﹣hand experience last Saturday of what it means to be a child displaced by war as the keynote speaker at the "Dinner for Peace," hosted by the Student Association for the Development of Arab Cultural Awareness.
About 250 guests attended the dinner, the proceeds of which will go to education for children affected by the Middle Eastern refugee crisis.
"Children did not create this conflict, but they are its greatest victims," said Alanoud Alzaid, the group's president, who gave the opening address at the dinner.
Junior Deema Abdo, co﹣founder of the non﹣profit Education for a Peaceful Middle East, helped explain the impact this dinner would have in the context of the Syrian refugee crisis.
"Tonight we have raised roughly ﹩3,000 in profit, which means over 1,000 children can get the education they deserve," she said. "Without you, tonight would not have been possible."
The Yellow Jackets kicked the night off with a selection of lively songs, designed to entertain their audience.
The Sihir belly dancing group﹣an Arabic dance also performed, with pride and authority in their costumes of shining gold and bright coral colors.
"We've been planning this for two months now. It feels wonderful to see such an amazing turnout," said Alzaid. "It reminds me that there is still humanity in each and every one of us."
On the whole, the dinner was a success. The audience was also full of praise.
"It's putting faces to the things we always hear about," sophomore Gabby Stillman said. "It brings back that human element and makes you remember that we're all the same."

22、My challenge for you is this: to read a book for 15 minutes every single day for a month.
Let me explain a bit, by telling you where the challenge came from. I have many things in common with my dad, like music taste and the sense of humor, but sadly reading isn’t one of them. I can happily spend a whole day with a book, but my dad can’t read a book for longer than about 5 minutes. He reads emails, websites and papers for work, but not books. He's busy, so I think sitting down to read for just 15 minutes a day is a good way to relax and to introduce him to reading.
My dad is not the only person who avoids books. I know lots of people would rather relax on their computers or in front of the TV. Everyone is different and has their own interests, but I think there are lots of benefits of reading, which screen-based activities don’t have.
Firstly, it's better for your eyes. Looking at screens can be very stressful for your eye muscles, and clearly you should avoid looking at screens for an hour before bed, to get a good night’s sleep.
One reason why I personally love reading is that I’m being transported to another world — I would often forget the time or things around me! Reading is a great way to switch off before you go to bed, because you think more about the world of the book, rather than the real world, so you can truly relax. I know you can be transported to a different world in a film or a TV show, but I think books do it better.
I also enjoy hearing what people are doing and finding out what they think. Reading gives me the chance to get to know hundreds of new people! It also teaches you to see things from other people’s point of view, and understand other people’s decisions or opinions. With a book, you can hear everything a character is thinking or feeling — you really can be inside someone else's head!
So give it a go! Take 15 minutes when you are waking up, going to bed, eating lunch, or having a coffee. If you read a lot, why not try 15 minutes of an English book, or pass the challenge on to someone else? Good luck, and happy reading!

A.Negative.

24、In between running one of the world’s largest charitable agencies and acting as Microsoft’s technology advisor, Bill Gates manages to find time to read books, both long and short. Now Gates --who has been labeled a “greedy” reader—has released a list of his favorite books of the year. All of the books are standout reads, according to the billionaire, most of which are focused on business and economy.
Here are Bill’s top four picks for the year (with parts of his full review of each book).
Business Adventures, by John Brooks
Brooks’ collection was published in 1969 and remains one of Gates’ favorites. He re-read it again this year, labeling it “the best business book I’ve ever read”.
“Shortly after we met, Warren Buffett lent me this collection of New Yorker business articles from the 1950s and 1960s. I loved them as much as he did. Brooks’ insights about business have aged beautifully, and they are as true today as ever.”
Capital in the Twenty-First Century, by Thomas Piketty
Piketty’s novel hit the shelves in August 2013 and sparked much discussion concerning income inequality throughout this year. Gates also got to sit down with Piketty himself after reading the non-fiction work to discuss the topic.
“As I told him, although I have concerns about some of his secondary points and policy prescriptions, I agree with his most important conclusions: inequality is a growing problem and that governments should play a role in reducing it.”
How Asia Works, by Joe Studwell
Studwell’s work, which was published in May this year, addresses how countries such as Japan, South Korea and China have continued to achieve high growth, and why other countries have failed to do the same.
“The agriculture section of the book was particularly insightful. It provided ample food for thought for me as well as the whole agriculture team at our foundation. And it left us thinking about whether parts of the Asian model can apply in Africa.
Making the Modern World: Materials and Dematerialization, by Vaelav Smil
Smil’s books are a constant favorite of the Microsoft founder—one of his books makes Gates’ list almost every year. Making the Modern World came out late last year and explores the global use of materials, from silicon to wood, and plastic.
“If anyone tries to tell you we’re using fewer materials, send him this book. With his usual skepticism and his love of data, Smil shows how our ability to make things with less materials—say, soda cans that need less aluminum—makes them cheaper, which actually encourages more production.”
【1】Of the books, ______ is best praised by Bill Gates.
A. How Asia Works
B. Capital in the Twenty-First Century
C. Business Adventures
D. Making the Modern World: Materials and Dematerialization
【2】The books mentioned in the text are all about______.

B. business and economy
C. poverty in the world
D. Bill Gates’ life experience
【3】In How Asia Works, the author analyses ______.
A. why African agriculture cannot be developed fast
B. How they can apply Asian economic model in African countries
C. why Asia is so slow in agricultural development
D. How some Asian countries have rapidly grown in economy
25、Promising Vaccine Trials Bring Hope To Coronavirus-Weary World
On December 1, 2020, the United Kingdom became the first western country to give emergency ______ for a COVID-19 vaccine. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) officials announced they would begin _______ 800,000 doses of Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine to 50 British hospitals as early as next week. The initial vaccines will be administered to some of the nation's most ______ citizens — nursing home residents, health workers, and the elderly.
The vaccines are made using a synthetic Messenger ribonucleic acid (核糖核酸), or mRNA, that contains ______ about the coronavirus’s signature spike protein (突刺蛋白). When injected into the body, it provides the immune system a _______ of what the threat looks like and allows it to prepare the antibodies needed to neutralize the virus if a person gets infected. This is different from traditional vaccines, which _______ the immune system by injecting weakened viruses that cannot reproduce themselves very effectively.
The _____ approach has several advantages. Since it does not use a live virus, there is little danger of the vaccinated person being infected with the coronavirus. mRNA vaccines are also easier and faster to mass-produce.
However, questions about how long the vaccines will provide protection and their _____ across various age groups and ethnicities are yet to be answered. Also, at an expected price of between $15 to $25 per dose, the immunizations will be expensive to extend, especially since each person needs two shots to obtain full ______.
______, Pfizer's BNT162b2 must be stored at a temperature of minus 94 degrees Fahrenheit (-70 degrees Celsius), and once melted, it lasts just five days in regular refrigerators. This means that the countries wishing to use the vaccination will first have to build cold storage _______. Moderna's mRNA-1273 will be a slightly easier choice since it can be stored in a regular medical freezer for up to six months. It also remains ______ in a standard refrigerator for up to a month after melting.
“Today’s emergency use authorization in the U.K. ______ a historic moment in the fight against COVID-19. This authorization is a goal we have been working toward since we first declared that science will win, and we ______ the MHRA for their ability to conduct a careful assessment and take timely action to help protect the people of the U.K.,” Albert Bourla, chairman and CEO of Pfizer, said in a press release.
Pfizer and Moderna are not the only ones competing to find a way to stop the spread of this deadly virus that has brought the world to a halt. With the world's greatest minds working together, there is little doubt that the coronavirus will be eliminated. However, given the extent of its ______, it will take some time. Until then, we must all continue to take the precautions recommended by medical experts.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It had been a long, tiring day because 48-year-old taxi driver Carl had worked for 8 hours. He’d been picking up and dropping off passengers the whole day. He wanted to get home then, but he noticed a panicky (恐慌的)woman getting off a taxi with a child in her arms.
“Why is she shouting at the driver?” Carl slowed down near them. He realized that the woman was begging the driver not to leave her there. The boy was having difficulty breathing, and his arms and legs were shaking uncontrollably. Carl realized the boy was having a seizure (疾病发作)and asked the woman to get into his taxi.
Carl drove as fast as he could. The hospital was several miles away, so he had to race against time to save the boy. Meanwhile, he grew concerned about why the previous driver had dropped them off during such an emergency. The woman told Carl that she and her four-year-old son, Tyler, returned from the park. She told the driver she would pay him once she got home because she didn’t take her purse. But then her son suddenly had a seizure, so she asked the driver to take them to the hospital instead. But the driver refused.
Half an hour later, they arrived at the hospital. Tyler was rushed inside for treatment as his mother waited outside the ward, crying. Carl was hungry and tired but stayed back. An hour later, the doctor said, “Tyler is out of danger now. But it could have been fatal (致命的)if you hadn’t made it here on time.”
Mrs Thomas immediately looked at Carl and cried in tears, thanking Carl for saving her son’s life. Carl was glad Tyler was out of danger. Later, he dropped them off at home, and when Mrs Thomas came out to pay him, he refused. “I have a policy. NO FARES for those making trips to the hospital!” said Carl “I just did what any good human being would do. And please convey my regards to Tyler!” Thomas was moved by his kindness. Carl never changed his policy of dropping off passengers at hospitals for free.
