二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   There has, in recent years, been an outpouring of information about the impact of buildings on the natural environment. Information which explains and promotes green and sustainable construction design strives to convince others of its effectiveness and warns of the dangers of ignoring the issue. Seldom do these documents offer any advice to practitioners, such as (hose designing mechanical and electrical systems for a building, on how to utilize this knowledge on a practical level.

While the terms green and sustainable arc often considered synonymous, in that they both symbolize nature, green does not include all that is meant by sustainability. Some elements of green design may be sustainable too, for example those which reduce energy usage and pollution, while others, such as ensuring internal air quality, may be considered green despite having no influence on the ecological balance.

Although there are a good many advocates of 'green' construction in the architectural industry, this is not enough to make green construction come into being. The driving force behind whether a building is constructed with minimal environmental impact lies with the owner of the building; that is, the person financing the project. If the owner considers green design unimportant, or of secondary importance, then more than likely, it will not be factored into the design.

The 81nmissioning(委托)process plays a key role in ensuring the owner gets the building he wants, in terms of design, costs and risk. At the predesign stage, the owner's objectives, criteria and the type of design imagined are discussed and documented. This gives a design team a solid foundation on which they can build their ideas, and also provides a specific standard against which individual elements, such as costs, design and environmental impact can be judged.

In some cases, an owner may be aware of the latest trends in sustainable building design. He may have done research into it himself or he may have been informed of the merits of green design through early discussion with professionals. However, firms should not take it as read that someone commissioning a building already has a preconceived idea of how green he intends the structure to be. Indeed, this initial interaction between owner and firm is the ideal time for a designer to outline and promote the ways that green design can meet the client's objectives, thus turning a project originally not destined for green design into a potential candidate.

【1】What is the passage mainly about?

A.Explaining to owners why ignoring green issues is costly and dangerous.

B.Explaining to professionals how they can influence clients to choose greener designs.

C.Explaining to owners the importance of green building design in reducing long-term damage.

D.Explaining to professionals why it is important to follow the correct procedures.

【2】The examples of green and sustainable designs given in paragraph 2 show that________.

A.designs must be sustainable in order for them to be described as green.

B.for the purposes of this paper, the terms green and sustainable have the same meaning.

C.some sustainable designs arc green, while others are not.

D.some designs are termed green, even though they are not sustainable.

【3】According to paragraph 3, the reason for the lack of green buildings being designed is that________.

A.few firms have any experience in design and constructing buildings to a green design.

B.construction companies are unaware of the benefits of green and sustainable designs.

C.firms do not get to decide whether a building is to be constructed sustainably.

D.firms tend to convince clients that other factors are more important than sustainability.

【4】Which of the following is NOT true about the commissioning process?

A.It is conducted before the building is designed.

B.It is a stage that all clients go through when constructing a building.

C.It is a step in the design procedure in which the clients goals arc identified.

D.It provides the firm with a measure of how well they did their job.

  • 22、My parents are amazing. I had the most wonderful childhood, and it’s not because I had everything I wanted or because I was a cool kid. I have learned a lot about parenting from what my parents did. Here are a few gems (珍宝) that I use now or plan to use in the future with my two boys.

Here’s how a conversation often went when I was a kid. Usually it was around 4:30 p.m. I said, “I’m hungry. Can I have a cookie?” My mom answered, “No. Have a banana.” “I don’t want a banana.” “Then you’re not hungry.” Sometimes I was angry about it, but I knew that was good for me. Thanks mom for not letting me eat junk food (垃圾食品). Now I agree with my mother and I have this same conversation with my three-year-old son. I hope it helps him form healthy diet habits.

I know many of us heard this as children. “If everyone jumped off a bridge, would you do it, too?” If our kids asked for something just because everyone else had it or was doing it, we often got this response. It was the perfect response, and we soon learned not to ask for things because everyone else had it, but because it was something we wanted.

I will always be thankful that my parents let us try the things that interested us, not the things they wanted to push us into. This helped me try swimming, dance, and the piano before second grade. I found a love singing and kept up with that through my college years. It drives me crazy, as a mom and teacher, when I see kids who are pushed into their parents’ favorite activities, even when they don’t have a passion for them.

【1】What are the gems in the writer’s mind?

    A. Her parents’ knowledge.

    B. Her parents’ educational methods.

    C. Her parents’ love.

    D. Her parents’ personalities.

2Why does the writer mention the conversation with her mother in Paragraph 2?

    A. To show her mother was so strict with her.

    B. To stress the importance of healthy diet habits.

    C. To show her mother was not concerned about her.

    D. To show how her mother helped her develop healthy diet habits.

3The response from the writer’s parents in Paragraph 3 is mainly used to   .

    A. refuse their kid’s same request

    B. meet their kid’s right request

    C. tell their kid not to be in danger

    D. tell the good from the bad

4Which of the following may be supported by the writer?

    A. The children must do what their parents want them to.

    B. The children can do anything that they want to.

    C. The children must do what is useful to society.

    D. The children can try the things that interest them.

  • 23、Volunteers are the backbone of the NHS (National Health Service). Time and time again I have seen the extraordinary impact they have on patient care. Without them, I do not think the NHS would survive. Yet they are often the unsung heroes of the health service. They go about their work quietly and with devotion, but often we overlook quite how important they are. Volunteers do the kind of work that doctors and nurses are unable to do, but is so important for the patients. Sometimes medicine can be too focused on the biological side of things — the diagnosis (诊断), the treatment, the pills and operations — and forgets that there is a social aspect that is just as important This is where volunteers can step in.

They have plenty of time to spend with patients, ensuring that they are comfortable, talking to them and listening to them in a way that many staff would love to do, but sadly just never have enough time. I remember an elderly woman who had come into hospital after she broke her leg, She was in pain, unable to walk and scared. Yet the thing that was causing her the most worry was the thought of her Yorkshire terrier at home, alone, without any food. From a medical perspective, this wasn’t a concern — it’s not something that the surgeons are going to prioritise (优先处理) worrying about when faced with someone so seriously unwell. The nurses on the ward have more than enough to do without thinking about a dog. Yet for the patient, this was the most important thing and there is no way she would have been able to focus on getting better until she knew her dog was looked after. In stepped Andy, a volunteer.

“Don’t worry. ” he reassured her, “I’ll sort everything out. ” He went round, checked on the dog and fed him and then sat and arranged for a charity which provides temporary homes to pets while their owners are in hospital. He even got regular photograph updates from the temporary parents that he showed the patient while she recovered to reassure her that her beloved dog was fine. It allowed the patient peace of mind to focus on getting better.

【1】Why are volunteers in NHS important?

A.Because NHS survives because of them.

B.Because they work quietly and devotedly.

C.Because they contribute to patients’ well-being.

D.Because they help doctors diagnose and treat patients.

【2】The author mentions the elderly woman in the second paragraph to ______.

    A.show NHS volunteers’ role

    B.show patients’ worries and pain

    C.show NHS volunteers are ignored

    D.show doctors are powerless sometimes

【3】Why did Andy show pictures of the patient’s dog to her?

A.To help her deal with boredom.

B.To prove the importance of his work.

C.To relieve her stress from her disease.

D.To drive away her worries about her dog.

【4】Which of the following can best describe Andy?

    A.Caring and devoted.

    B.Brave and warm-hearted.

    C.Ambitious and confident.

    D.Determined and humorous.

  • 24、Fatty food may feel like a friend during these troubled times, but new research suggests that eating just one meal high in saturated fat(饱和脂肪) can affect our ability to concentrate (集中注意力).

The study compared how 51 women performed on a test of their attention after they ate either a meal high in saturated fat or the same meal made with sunflower oil, which is high in unsaturated fat. Their performance on the test was worse after eating the high-saturated-fat meal.

The loss of focus after a single meal was eye-opening for the researchers. “Most previous work looking at the causative effect of the diet has looked over a period of time. And this was just one meal-it’s pretty remarkable that we saw a difference, said Annelise Madison, lead author of the study.

Women in the study completed a baseline assessment (评估) of their attention during a morning visit to the lab. The tool, called a continuous performance test, is a measure of continued attention, concentration and reaction time based on 10 minutes of computer-based activities. Five hours later after the high-fat meal, the women took the continuous performance test again. Between one and four weeks later, they repeated these steps. After eating the meal high in saturated fat, all of the participating women were 1l percent less able to detect target stimuli (刺激物).

Though the study didn’t determine what was going on in the brain, Madison said previous research has suggested food high in saturated fat can drive up inflammation(英症) throughout the body, and possibly the brain. Fatty acids can also cross the blood-brain barrier.

“What we know is that when people are more anxious, they will find high-saturated-fat food more attractive than vegetables, she said. ”We know from other research that depression and anxiety(焦虑) can influence concentration and attention as well. When we add that on top of the high-fat meal, we could expect the real-world effects to be even larger.”

【1】What does the new study focus on?

A.The health value of sunflower oil

B.The methods of making meals tastier.

C.The effect of fatty food on our attention.

D.The differences between saturated fat and unsaturated fat.

【2】What can we know about the women in the study?

A.They are fond of high-fat food.

B.They are good at operating computers.

C.They were asked to come to the lab after lunch.

D.They were tested on attention twice on the first day.

【3】What does the underlined word“that”in the last paragraph refer to?

    A.Other research.

    B.Depression and anxiety.

    C.The real-world situation

    D.The inflammation in the brain.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

A.Fatty food should be completely forbidden

B.Mental state usually affects our choice of food

C.Our ability to think can improve after big meals

D.A single high-saturated-fat meal makes us less focused

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage and write a summary in no more than 60 words. The original sentences in the passage are not allowed to use.

    Walking Is Not Enough

All of us need to exercise. However, not everyone has the time or desire to join a gym. Everyone can walk, though! But how can a person with an inactive lifestyle walk for exercise? The key is to set an attainable goal. Just by doing daily chores, an inactive person probably already takes around two thousand steps per day. For exercise purpose, the aim should then be to walk more over time. A popular exercise goal for people these days is ten thousand steps per day.

Reaching a certain number of steps is not enough, however. Casual, slow walking does not really exercise the heart. It does not burn many calories, either. Health benefits result from at least thirty minutes of daily moderate-intensity exercise.

The intensity of a workout only needs to be enough to increase a person’s heart rate. Simply walking fast can do that. Keep in mind, though, that such fast walking needs to continue for at least ten minutes. Five minutes of fast walking six times a day will not benefits one’s health. Three 10-minute sessions can total thirty minutes per day. And that daily goal should be met five times per week.

Dr Vicki Harber is a researcher at the University of Alberta in Canada. She says, “People might not pay much attention to the pace or effort invested in taking those steps.” With a ten-thousand step daily target, Harber recommends that about one-third of those daily steps should be at a faster pace.
