二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、With fingers and wrists wrapped in medicated tape, Zhang Guimei, founder and principal of the first free high school for girls in China, was presented with the July 1 Medal on Tuesday.

Zhang met her husband in Dali and worked as a teacher in a local school. Unfortunately, her husband died of cancer not long after their marriage. Sadly, Zhang decided to leave this place with which she was too familiar. Hence, she volunteered to teach at a middle school in Huaping, a poverty-stricken county located in the mountains.

Over time, Zhang witnessed the gender gap in education up close in relatively poor rural areas. Urban and rural students already faced unequal access to quality education, and the traditional belief of male superiority only worsened rural girls’ situation. She discovered that many female students would just disappear after studying for a while and some girls were even pulled out of class just before the college entrance exam. The reasons varied: to pay for the younger brother’s tuition, the girl’s parents would have her quit and return home to earn money; the family received engagement gifts...

In 2002, Zhang came up with an idea which, to many, seemed crazy: to found a free high school for girls. Six years later, with help from the Party and the local government and personal donations, she founded the Huaping All-Girls High School. With the goal of never letting a girl fall behind in schooling, Zhang often works overtime despite suffering from several kinds of illnesses. She has walked to almost every household deep in the mountains, talking to the parents about the importance of education for girls.

The efforts paid off. Over the past 13 years, her school has sent 1,800 girls to university. “To educate a girl is to change the destiny of three generations. A cultured, responsible mother won't let her daughter drop out of school,” Zhang said.

【1】What probably made Zhang Guimei decide to leave the local school in Dali?

    A.Her loss of husband.

    B.Her desire for exploration.

    C.Her love for teaching.

    D.Her eagerness for adventure.

【2】What inspired Zhang to found a high school for girls?

    A.Difficult examinations.

    B.Gender inequality.

    C.Local misunderstanding.

    D.Teacher resignation.

【3】Which of the following words can best describe Zhang Guimei?

    A.Determined.

    B.Pessimistic.

    C.Economical.

    D.Outspoken.

【4】What’s the main idea of the text?

A.A free high school for girls was successfully set up.

B.A woman with illnesses faces ups and downs in life.

C.The gender gap in education in rural China is bridged.

D.A woman’s devotion to girls’ education finally paid off.

  • 22、As any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a family meal than food. Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more.

Lewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping(录像)the families while they ate ordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents’ efforts to control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. “In general the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the children’s IQ scores,” Lewis says. “And the more children there are, the less question-asking there is.”

The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings(兄弟姐妹). Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention. “Middle children are invisible,” says Lewis. “When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it’s the middle child.” There is, however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention: “When the TV is on,” Lewis says, “dinner is a non-event.”

【1】The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to ______.

    A. show the relationship between parents and children

    B. report on the findings of a study

    C. teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner table

    D. give information about family problems

【2】Parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because ______.

    A. they are busy serving food to their children

    B. they have to pay more attention to younger children

    C. they are busy keeping order at the dinner table

    D. they are tired out having prepared food for the whole family

【3】Lewis’ research provides an answer to the question ______.

    A. why middle children seem to have more difficulties in life

    B. why TV is important in family life

    C. why parents should keep good order

    D. why children in small families seem to be quieter

【4】Which of the following statements would the writer agree to?

    A. It is important to have the right food for children.

    B. It is a good idea to have the TV on during dinner.

    C. Elder children should help the younger ones at dinner

    D. Parents should talk to each of their children frequently.

  • 23、With nearly a quarter of global greenhouse gas coming from all types of transportation, can we keep ourselves off gas-powered vehicles to avoid the worst effects? As more governments push for urgent action on climate change, quite a few companies are betting their future – that millions of consumers are finally ready for electricity-powered vehicles. Modern battery-powered cars are selling fast and zero- emission ( 排放) planes are coming. These changes, both leading to a more sustainable future, are reinventing how we get from here to there.

Cars and trucks are undergoing their greatest improvement since the automobile’s (汽车) existence more than a century ago. Almost overnight, the era of the electric car has arrived. Electricity has the advantage that it works without smell and with less noise. Global annual sales of electric vehicles are expected to soar from just over 3 million today to 14 million by 2025. Just a month after Ford unveiled an electric version of the popular F-150, customers had reserved more than 100,000 of them. The price is about $10,000 above the gas-powered one, but Ford says the electric model will cost much less to maintain. Everything creating a green revolution on the ground is of limited help in the sky for the time being.

High-storage batteries are useless at present when it comes to the technological challenge of launching a few hundred people into the sky and carrying them thousands of miles. No battery yet invented can power, say, a Boeing 747 from New York to London. Promising improvements, however, do add up. Developments with zero-emission, battery-powered electric engines are already happening in commercial flight, involving trips of limited duration and distance. Airlines specializing in short journeys with small planes will lead the way to electric flight.

Our planet’s health depends on zeroing out carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, and yet, by the timetable needed to address the climate challenge, the shift away from gas-powered vehicles remains far too slow. Nevertheless, the train has left the station. Someday, electric-powered transportation will be as common as air.

【1】Why are many companies switching to electricity-powered vehicles?

A.To reinvent the way we travel.

B.To cut the costs of car production.

C.To improve the quality of products.

    D.To pursue sustainable development.

【2】What do we know about the electric car?

A.It came into use a century ago.

    B.It enjoys increasing popularity.

C.It sells better than the traditional one.

D.It costs less than the gas-powered one.

【3】What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 3?

A.To show the disadvantages of battery power.

B.To emphasize the significance of short flights.

C.To stress the future prospects of electric planes.

D.To state the developments of commercial flight.

【4】What does the author mean by saying “the train has left the station”?

    A.Train transportation has improved.

B.Green transportation is on its way.

C.The electric train is running regularly.

D.The gas-powered train has become the past.

  • 24、   Even for a civilization as advanced as the Harappan, a second drought was perhaps one too many. The climate disaster may be what drove the ancient society to disappear step by.

The Harappan started in the Indus valley around 5200 years ago, strongest around 2600 BC. Much about them is unknown. Yet archaeological remains tell the story of the people, skilled in trade and city planning, and particularly good at controlling water. Their huge cities, complete with excellent systems for underground water and public baths, existed long before the Roman Empire.

But by 1900 BC, their society seemed to be on the fall, and by 1300 BC, the Harappan civilizations had broken down. Several ideas have been put forward to explain the downfall, including invasion and climate change. One recent study refers to a major drought in the northern half around 4200 years ago. This event was recently considered as the start of the Meghalayan period. It is thought to have broken up climate systems around the world, including the summer monsoon rainfall the Harappan depended on.

Nick Scroxton at University College Dublin, Ireland, and his team are now challenging this idea after studying 10 ancient records. They found some facts of a sudden drought starting around 4260 years ago. The study suggests the Harappan faced a sharp decrease in winter rain. “The civilization suffered, that's for sure,” says Scroxton. But that wasn't the end of the Harappan. “Their politics might change, the crops might change, the location of their cities changes, but they adapt,” says Scroxton.

Some 300 years later, however, just as the winter rains were starting to recover, a hottest drought kicked off. This was a slowing reduction in the sum monsoon rains over several centuries. Scroxton and his team say this second drought changed the Harappan into a poor society that disappeared at last.

1What is the second paragraph mainly about?

A.The trade with the Roman Empire. B.The site of the Harappan civilization.

C.The rise of the Harappan civilization. D.The similarities between Roman and Harappan.

2How did Nick's team conduct the study?

A.By tracking the rainfall. B.By moving into the city.

C.By building climate systems. D.By researching ancient records.

3What may have really ended the ancient Harappan civilization?

A.The monsoon rainfall. B.Double climate disaster.

C.The invasion of Roman. D.The change of the cities.

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words.Use your own words as far as possible.

    Are you a textaholic?

Do you spend over an hour each day texting your friends? Do you frequently neglect work, study and leisure activities to check your phone for text message? Are you moody and emotional if you are separated from your mobile phone? Do you hardly ever use your phone to talk any more, and do your thumbs from texting too much?

If you answered 'Yes' to any of the above questions, then the chances are that you are a textaholic.A textaholic can be defined as someone who is addicted to sending and receiving text messages. The main symptoms are strong will to text which takes precedence over (优先于) everything else, and withdrawal symptoms (戒断症状)if messages fail to come in, leading to anger, depression and a lack of self-respect.Other problems include sleeplessness, eye strain, and repetitive strain injury due to constant messaging, not to mention expensive phone bills. The root of the problem, as with many addictions, is the desire to escape from emotional difficulties such as stress, anxiety and relationship problems.Experts warn that text addiction is likely to become the most common form of addiction in the future, especially among the young.

So what can you do if you think you may be textaholic? The key is to get your life back in balance.Make sure you resist the urge to answer every message you receive, and consider leaving your mobile phone behind occasionally when you go out. Most importantly, make a point of spending quality time with friends and family, and make time to re — learn the art of face-to-face conversation instead of conducting your relationships by means of text messages. Not only will you save time and money, but you may also rediscover the pleasure of true communication.
