二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   If you happened to be at the recent National Senior Games in Albuquerque last June, it’s likely that you would have found an extremely enthusiastic group of 19 people, all wearing bright yellow T-shirts that read “Blossom at 85” on one side and "Gammy’s Groupies" on the other. “That’s my team,” says Andrea Harrison, speaking about the family and friends there to cheer her on. Harrison is certainly blossoming at 85—so much so that she walked away with gold in the 800 meters with a time of 6'24" and silver in the 5K, finishing in 43'1'.

“People often tell me that they’re inspired by my running and they are encouraged to do more to stay active because of it. ” Harrison says. “I feel like this is my job and my purpose now, to get people moving, no matter what their ages are.”

She even has a presentation she gives at community centers and schools, centering on how beneficial running and exercise can be on emotional heath as well as physical health. Calling it “Motion Over Disturbance;” she says it emphasizes how the motion of movement takes away the disturbance in your head, clearing away all those little worries and bothers of everyday life.

Harrison also likes to tell her audiences that she’s a late bloomer when it comes to running. She started when she was 50 years old, and only because of her sons, then a junior in high school, wanted to be on a track team. So the two of them ran around the parking lot of the school.

Now running 11 miles a week, she calms the “excitement” in her mind by spending her time praying for family members as she runs, particularly for her twin sister who has dementia (痴呆). But of course she also includes her 6 children, 14 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.

There are often strangers approaching her after races to congratulate her on a win-she jokes that there “aren’t too many old ladies” for competition. “They say, ‘If you can run like this, I should be running,’ ” she says. “And I say ‘Well, go ahead. What are you waiting for?’”

1What is Harrison’s job in her own opinion?

    A.Being a member of a track team.

    B.Winning gold and silver medals.

C.Encouraging people to run regardless of ages.

D.Giving lectures on the benefits of exercise.

2Which of the following can replace the underlined part “bloomer” in Paragraph 4?

    A.Competitor. B.Runner.

    C.Instructor. D.Achiever.

3What is Harrison always doing while running?

A.Listening to some music. B.Missing her family members.

C.Praying to calm down. D.Waiting for the strangers. ,

4What can be inferred from the whole text?

A.It’s never too late to learn. B.All that glitters is not gold.

C.To strike while iron is hot. D.Well begun is half done.

  • 22、When I was reading a post about taking someone to the movies, something happened a couple of years ago suddenly hit me.

I used to drink Cokes and they had a competition where there was a code inside the bottle cap. You might win something so long as you went to a website and entered the code. I won some free Cokes. But what astonished and delighted me was the Grand Prize I won then.

The Grand Prize was free movies for a year. They pointed out that one movie a week was what free movies for a year meant. All of the tickets were valid(有效的) for one year from the day I received them. So I must use them in the following year. I used quite a few taking friends to movies we all wanted to see.

But the best thing I did with them was that I donated 20 tickets (all I had left by that time) to the local Women’s Transition House, a place where women and children could go when avoiding a bad situation in general and get help to make a new start.

My workplace team had decided to help people in need, so we collected donations for that particular New Year’s Day. I knew that the Women’s Transition House provided some childcare for the women so they could go for job interviews and things like that.

I put those tickets in a box and wrote a note on the outside, asking the Women’s Transition House staff to give movie tickets to women there over the holidays to have some fun to do, with or without their children, which made me really happy.

A.By visiting a website by chance.

  • 23、The year 2009 is the Year of Ox. The ox is a representative of the farming culture of China. In the farming economy (经济), oxen are the major animals pulling plows (犁).

Of course, the good of oxen is not limited to plowing. In fact, they are seen as “boats on land” for their ability to carry loads. Besides, the whole body of an ox is full of treasures. Their meat and milk are food full of nutrition, and their skin can be used to make clothes and shoes. With all these qualities, oxen are regarded as generous creatures.

In the past, oxen played an important role in the spiritual life of the Chinese. Even today, oxen still play a special part in some folk activities. For example, some people who live in southwest China will cook cattle bone soup and share it among family members when holding the ceremony for children who reach 13. They believe that the cattle bone soup represents the blood relationship among family members. In order to express their love for oxen, people in some other areas will run to shake off diseases on the 16th day of the first month by the lunar calendar (农历), and during their run they will take their oxen along, which indicates they regard the creature as human.

    _______________________________________________________________________________

    Dear Susan,

Please forward this message to students of my history class.

Besides the life story of Rosa Parks in the textbook, the students are also required to read the passage below and some related stories that can be borrowed from the school library.

    Ted Hume

The early experiences of Rosa Parks(1913-2005), long known as the “mother of the civil rights movement,” were not different from those of many African-Americans at that time. The black woman, however, turned the course of American history in December 1955 when she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. “By sitting down, ” remarked John Lewis, “She was standing up for all Americans.”

Among the numerous awards Parks received in her life were the Presidential Medal of Freedom(1996) and the Congressional Gold Medal(1999).

Parks died on Oct. 24, 2005. At St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Montgomery, a large crowd including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice celebrated her life. Rice said she and others, who grew up when the political activities of Parks held public attention, might not have realized her impact on their lives, “but I can honestly say that without Mrs. Parks, I probably would not be standing here as Secretary of State.”

After her casket(灵柩) was placed at the Capitol, U.S. President Bush, members of Congress and ordinary Americans paid their respects. In American history Parks is the first woman to lie in state at the Capitol, a very high regard usually reserved for Presidents of the United States.

【1】What is the main purpose of Susan’s email?

A.To introduce to the students Rosa Parks.

B.To help the students organize a lecture.

C.To answer Professor Hume’s last email.

D.To make arrangements for Professor Hume’s class.

【2】What does the underlined word “forward” mean?

    A.Read.  B. Explain.  C. Send.  D. Take.

【3】The political impact of Rosa Parks lies in the fact that she ________.

A.joined the civil rights movement at a young age

B.made racial equality a common value in American society

C.helped Condoleezza Rice achieve political success

D.set a good example in her early life for other black Americans

4】How was Rosa Parks treated after her death?

A.She was honored to lie in state at the Capitol.

B.She was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

C.She was received by President Bush at the Capitol.

D.She was named “mother of the civil rights movements.”

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One evening I went to the park to refresh myself as usual. I rested on the bench and leaned back, stretching my legs. I did nothing but watch kids' activities over there. My eyes fell upon a pair of cute children. I was fascinated by their gaming, screaming and saying in no-cent words. Perhaps, they used to come regularly but I didn't notice them before. They seemed to be brother and sister, I guessed they were under ten years old. I stared at them as they involved themselves in their fun game; hide and seek. Their loose coats put a barrier to hide and easily one of them was caught by the other. Then I joined their game and enjoyed it without being an onlooker.

While playing, the girl came running towards me to hide behind the bench. The moment I saw her, she gestured, clamping her finger on her lips. I sat straight to help her to hide, acting as if I didn't know anything. After finishing his count down, the boy searched for her here and there. At last, he spotted her behind me and screamed, “Grace, come out. I saw you.”

She shouted loudly, “No, Christian, you cheated. You have to find me again. Go back behind the tree and start counting again.” The boy clapped his hands cheerfully. He laughed out loud, “No, I did it. You are caught.” They both started pulling each other. Somehow, I enjoyed their bane fully. Suddenly, I noticed Grace pull her brother towards the fence. A homeless little dog was struggling with pain.
