二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Have you ever taken a selfie (自拍照) and thought, “Why do I look so weird (奇怪的)?” The reason may be because photos show us the reverse (相反) of what we see in the mirror. When we take a photo of ourselves using the front-facing camera on a phone, the resulting image captures our face as others see it. This can be a little weird because our faces are not perfectly symmetrical, and certain features don’t line up in photos the same way they do in the mirror.

In addition to the reverse image issue, our tendency to like what we’re familiar with also plays a role. We are most familiar with our faces as we see them in the mirror, so we come to prefer that mirror image. According to the mere exposure theory, repeatedly encountering something makes us like it more. When we look at ourselves in the mirror, we tend to focus on what we consider our good side, or the angle that seems most attractive to us.

“You have that familiarity, which breeds liking. You’ve established a preference for that look of your face,” said Pamela Rutledge, director of the Media Psychology Research Center.

New York-based photographer Michael Levy expanded on Rutledge’s point. He noted that when we look at ourselves in the mirror, we tend to focus on what we consider our good side — that is, the angle that seems most attractive to us.

Furthermore, when we see our faces in the mirror, we are looking at ourselves in motion, as opposed to completely still in a photo. We tend to notice a lot more details in a still photo, and different camera lenses and a person’s distance to the camera can also change the way people look in photos.

But ultimately, the way we appear in photos is the way we look to the rest of the world, and studies have shown that other people generally like the version of us they see, as opposed to the image we see of ourselves. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. So go forth and selfie.

【1】Why do people sometimes appear “weird” in selfies, according to the article?

A.Because selfies are often taken in bad lighting.

B.Because they are not standing at the correct angle.

C.Because selfies show a reversed image of the face.

D.Because people tend to overthink their appearance in selfies.

【2】According to the article, what is the mere exposure theory?

A.A theory about how people like what they see in the mirror.

B.A theory about how people prefer certain angles in photographs.

C.A theory about how people tend to focus on details in still photographs.

D.A theory about how repeated exposure to something makes people like it more.

【3】What is the purpose of the text?

A.To provide tips for better selfies.

    B.To Promoting self-acceptance in photos.

C.To explain differences in appearance between photos and mirrors.

D.To explore factors behind preference for mirror images over photo images.

【4】How does the author support his explanations for the phenomenon of why we look different in selfies and mirrors?

A.By providing statistical data and graphs.

B.By comparing selfies and mirror images.

C.By using questions and persuasive language.

D.By citing scientific studies and experts’ opinions.

  • 22、Everyone deserves to love where he or she live. That’s why Tash Frootko, a property developer in Gloucester, England, began the Rainbow Street project in her quiet town four years ago.

Frootko brought a new life to her properties by brightening the outside of each home, transforming her neighborhood into a colorful place. Now, she is partnering with local street artists to take her project a step further and turn Gloucester’s city center into a Rainbow Square.

“We didn’t get recognition from local people at first. But later, an unexpected outcome happened, ”said Frootko.

“It has brought the community together really well, “Michelle, a local citizen said. “If it wasn’t for Frootko, then none of us would have come out and spoken to each other. ”

“I actively seek out areas that can’t receive enough attention and turn them into huge attractive colors for everyone to enjoy and add a much-needed cultural boost for the city, ” Frootko said.

The new Rainbow Square includes an even more special design. Frootko convinced two street artists to get on board and contribute large murals to two buildings on the Square. Power, a street artist and printmaker, has worked on community art projects across the UK. She said, “This was truly a labour of love. With a uniquely designed typeface, shadows and gold leaf, I hope that this mural becomes a much-loved landmark of the city and makes the city attractive.”

The final result of the project was a huge hit, turning a once sleepy collection of streets into a place that celebrates joy and culture. • 23、Overlooking the Davis—Gant Varsity Soccer Field, a bed of overturned soil waits for further development. In a few years, this area will become a natural habitat and a playground for animals and residents. This peaceful area didn’t appear naturally, but through planning and action taken by Catlin Gabel’s Tiny Forest project launched by teacher Patrick Walsh.

Forests typically take hundreds of years to mature, with four stages of growth. “Tiny forests flatten out time through the planting of all four layers (层),” Walsh explained. The end result is a fast—growing, native forest in about 20 years. Over 600 plants from 43 species will be planted in the tiny forest, the first one in Oregon.

Walsh was inspired to build a tiny forest after hearing about this idea, which emerged in Japan and has taken hold in North America. He shared his vision with seniors in his class. The seniors researched tiny forests and made a proposal resulting in Clean Water Services donating 60 trees and $5,000 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Armed with these resources, Walsh and the students started working. “Something I didn’t really expect was the outpouring of students’ enthusiasm. Seeing students from all grades volunteered to contribute to the ‘dirty work’ really blew me away,” Walsh said.

Senior Megan Cover has been at the school since the first grade. “I’ll graduate after working on this project, which is surely sad, but it’s really rewarding and great to be a part of this project and to do my bit. We’re creating this educational space for many young kids,” Cover said.

Walsh summed up his goal of the project, which is to build a place where students can enjoy and learn about nature. “The forest will obviously not solve climate change, but it would deserve the efforts if the kids think about climate change and remember the importance of reforestation and trees when they look outside at the forest.”

【1】What is special about tiny forests?

    A.They originated in North America.

B.They are usually planted in schools.

C.They contain various types of trees.

D.They become mature in a shorter time.

【2】What surprised Walsh in the process of planting the tiny forest?

A.The abundance of native tree species.

    B.Public concern about the environment.

    C.The active participation of students.

    D.Support from local organizations.

【3】How does Megan Cover feel about the project?

    A.Proud.

    B.Hopeful.

    C.Excited.

    D.Grateful.

【4】What does Walsh want the forest to function as for the students?

    A.A source of enjoyment.

    B.A reminder.

    C.A source of inspiration.

    D.A witness.
