21、 The decision on Tuesday by Japan and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to postpone the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games until next summer because of the novel coronavirus pandemic must have been a hard one to make.
Although the Games have been canceled—three times in all, in 1916, 1940 and 1944—due to the two world wars in the modern Olympics’ history of more than 120 years, never before have any Games been postponed to a different year.
Nonetheless, the decision is the right one. If it is not brought under control, the harm done to human society by the pandemic could be more serious and far-reaching than even the two world wars. Given the number of countries affected and social and economic shock waves that have been caused by the rapid spread of the virus, postponing the Games is the only right and sensible choice to make.
After all, nothing is more important than people’s lives. Postponing the Games not only safeguards the health of athletes, audiences and everyone involved in the Games, but also reduces potential transmission of the virus from one place to another. Even looking at it from only a sporting level, the pandemic has already caused huge disruptions to athletes’ training and the qualification process.
It is undoubtedly a big blow for Japan, which has prepared meticulously for the largest sports event in the world, including renovating and upgrading its infrastructure and sports venues, such as rebuilding Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium at cost of $1.45 billion. Japan will suffer huge loss at least in the short term.
The international community owes a big “thank you” to Japan for all it has done for the Games despite the postponement. That’s why the Games will still be called the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 despite taking place in 2021. The Olympic flame will also remain stored and displayed in Japan.
More importantly, all members in the Olympic family, guided by the Olympic spirit of respect and understanding are morally bound to stand behind Japan to go through this most difficult moment in the Games’ history.
【1】What does the word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The decision. B.The Games. C.The pandemic. D.The war.

B.the Games will still be called Tokyo 2020 Games for its sacrifice

【4】What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.The whole world will support Japan. B.Japan will keep the Olympic flame burning.
C.Postponing the Games will bring the world hope. D.Tokyo will become the symbol of the Games.
22、Unlike humans who enter a state of relatively complete unconsciousness while sleeping, birds can more carefully control their sleep. Birds often sleep with one eye open, only half their brain resting at the same time. The other half of the brain is awake, able to note danger if needed.
While the exact way in which birds control their sleep patterns has not been well studied, it has been shown that the safer a bird feels when sleeping, the more likely it is to sleep deeper. If the situation is more uncertain, however, the bird will sleep more lightly.
Sleeping together is another defensive method that many birds use. By living together, some species can create a nighttime place where thousands of individuals sleep. As a result, there are more birds to notice their enemies’ attack, giving each individual bird a greater chance of survival. In winter, many birds, particularly small birds, live together to share body heat and survive lower nighttime temperatures.
When birds sleep, they bury weak body parts in their feathers. A bird’s feathers create air pockets that help it keep warm, and by placing feet or the bill into the feathers, less body heat is lost. When a bird’s bill is buried deeply in its feathers, it is also able to breathe air warmed by its own body heat.
There is little data about how long birds sleep at a time, but studies show that birds may sleep longer during longer nights. This may be because birds are not able to search for food or take part in other activities without enough light and so sleeping is the next natural item on their to-do lists. Birds are able to sleep for a short time during the day, however, and can also sleep longer whenever they are in a safe place.
【1】How can birds control their sleep?
A.By opening both of the eyes.
B.By ignoring danger frequently.
C.By entering a dream completely.

A.They can attack their enemies.
B.They can protect themselves well.
C.They can lower body temperatures.
D.They can share body heat in summer.
【4】Where do birds put their weak body parts while sleeping?
A.Into their feathers.
B.Into their feet.
C.Into their mouths.
D.Into their skin pockets.
【5】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Birds can search for food in weak light.
B.Birds should plan their activities more carefully.
C.Birds can usually sleep longer at night in winter.
D.Birds should place sleeping first on their to-do lists.
23、 All eyes were on Jack Ma. The chairman of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. left his position on Teachers’ Day from leading the e-commerce (电子商务) giant he founded 20 years ago.
“I still have lots of dreams to go after.” Ma wrote in an open letter last year to announce his parting. “The world is big, and I am still young, so I want to try new things.”
The 55-year-old businessman showed that he was ready for new things by arriving at his farewell party dressed up like a rock star.
In fact, his rags-to-riches (白手起家的) story is a good example of doing something different. Visiting the United States in 1995, Ma saw the internet and had the idea of setting up his own trading website. In 1999, he founded Alibaba with a group of friends in a shared apartment, struggling for years to get it off the ground. With all the challenges, the company slowly brought e-commerce to China.
Although his success has inspired a number of Chinese tech businessmen, Ma pointed out that the key is having a dream. “It’s the dreams that keep us full of confidence and never afraid of setbacks (挫折).” Ma said in a video posted on Sept 9.
Now the experienced businessman is looking to focus on education. What can he offer? “I’m not going to teach English; I’m not going to teach business. But I’m going to teach young people how to face challenges.” he told Bloomberg News.
Skilled sailors were never made on calm waters. As Ma said, “Today is cruel. Tomorrow is crueler. But the day after tomorrow is beautiful.”
【1】What can we infer according to Paragraph 4?
A.Jack Ma was born in a rich family.
B.Jack Ma had the idea of setting up his own trading website in 1999.
C.Jack Ma founded Alibaba alone.
D.Jack Ma went through challenges to found Alibaba.
【2】What does Ma think dreams mean to us?
A.Dreams can guide us to further our education. B.Dreams can give us confidence and courage.
C.Dreams can push us to set up new businesses. D.Dreams can lead us to offer more to society.
【3】What lessons will be offered by Ma?
A.How to operate business. B.How to learn English.
C.How to face challenges. D.How to set up a website.
【4】What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph imply?
A.Practice makes perfect. B.Confidence is the key to success.
C.Skilled sailors like calm waters. D.We should face challenges bravely.
24、Amazing Waterfalls (瀑布) From All over the World
Sutherland Falls
Sutherland Falls is located in Fiordland, New Zealand, and it shows, an amazing 1,902-foot fall. Donald Sutherland discovered the waterfall in 1880 and he was the first to focus his eyes on the beautiful waterfall. With a striking lake at the top of the falls and mountains set in the background there, it is a really good view.
Detian Falls
This waterfall is on the border of China and Vietnam. It is about 300 feet wide, 164 feet high and comes from Guichun Boundary River. Located in the foreground are beautiful rice and vegetable fields and the background is nothing but the jungle. While Detian Falls may be great, it is not respected as one of the best waterfalls on the planet and we think that isn't fair.
Gocta Falls
While Gocta Falls has been an important place for the locals of Peru for centuries, it wasn't really known to the rest of the world until 2005! This is an unbelievable fact that Gocta Falls is among the five highest waterfalls on the entire planet, about 2,490 feet high. This is probably the farthest trip on the list but the views are worth it.
McWay Falls
McWay Falls is located on the Central Coast of California near Big Sur. While this water-fall looks completely tiny compared-to many others on this list, it is still a worthwhile destination. This waterfall is only 80 feet high but it feeds into a beautiful bay right off the Pacific Ocean. With the endless ocean to your left, a waterfall to your back, and comfortable rocks keeping you in the bay, there is no more beautiful place to be.
【1】What can we see in front of Detian Falls?
A.A lake.
B.The ocean.
C.Bays.
D.Crops.
【2】What do we know about Gocta Falls?
