二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   There are around 100 tribes that live in global isolation, mostly in South America and India.

The Sentinelese(250 people)have lived on one of the Andaman Islands in Eastern India for 60, 000 years. They protect their island by fighting against people from outside. Their language is different from any other known language.

Another Andaman tribe is the Jarawa(300 people). In the past, they were independent and fought against anybody trying to make contact with them. But in 1998, the Indian govemment built a road across their land, and since then, they’ve had more contact with the outside world.

Some Amazon tribes avoid contact because of unhappy memories. The Mashco—Piro left their vegetable gardens after rubber companies killed most of their tribe at the beginning of the 20th century. Those who survived became nomadic(游牧的)and started hunting animals in the forest.

The Awa live in the Amazon forests of Brazil. Out of 350 members, 100 have no contact with the outside world. They left their villages and adopted a nomadic lifestyle around 1850 to escape attacks by Europeans. In the following years, farmers in nearby communities started cutting the trees to expand their farmland. The Awa lost most of their hunting land.

The few Amazon tribes that still exist are fighting to keep their traditional way of life.

Survival, an organization that fights for the rights of tribal people, says that uncontacted tribes are the most vulnerable(弱势的)humans on the planet and that’s why their environment should be unavailable to the rest of us.

After years of pressure, the organization got Brazil’s government to clear invaders from the Awa land. All non-Awa people are leaving so the tribe can get their forest back. But some think it’s impossible for tribes to stay isolated forever in a connected world. Contact will be made one day. So the question is:Whose choice should it be, ours or theirs?

【1】What could be learnt about the Sentinelese from the text?

A.They speak the same language as the Jarawa.

B.They resist contact from the outside world.

C.There are about 350 members in their tribe.

D.They received help from the Indian government.

【2】Why did the Awa adopt a nomadic lifestyle?

A.To avoid being attacked by Europeans.

B.To avoid being robbed by rubber companies.

    C.To protect their hunting land.

D.To maintain their traditional way of life.

【3】What is Survival’s view of the tribal people?

A.They should fight for their rights by themselves.

B.We should show them respect and not disturb them.

C.It’s impossible to stay isolated from the outside world.

D.We should help them get used to the connected world.

【4】How does the author describe the isolated tribes?

    A.Doubtfully.

    B.Critically.

    C.Indifferently.

    D.Objectively.

  • 22、   Jenny was a bright-eyed, pretty five-year-old girl. One day when she and her mother were checking out at the grocery store, Jenny saw a plastic pearl necklace priced at $2.50. How she wanted that necklace! When she asked her mother if she would buy it for her, her mother said, “Well, it is a pretty necklace, but it costs an awful lot of money. I’ll tell you what. I’ll buy you the necklace, and when we get home we can make up a list of housework that you can do to pay for the necklace. And don’t forget that for your birthday, Grandma just might give you a whole dollar bill, too. Okay?” Jenny agreed, and her mother bought the pearl necklace for her.

Jenny worked on her housework very hard every day, and sure enough, her grandma gave her a brand-new dollar bill for her birthday. Soon Jenny had paid off the pearls. How Jenny loved those pearls. She wore them everywhere to kindergarten, bed and when she went out with her mother to run errands (跑腿). The only time she didn’t wear them was in the shower. Her mother had told her that they would turn her neck green!

Jenny had a very loving daddy. When Jenny went to bed, he would get up from his favorite chair every night and read Jenny her favorite story.

One night when he finished the story, he said, “Jenny, do you love me?”

“Oh yes, Daddy, you know I love you,” the little girl said.

“Well, then, give me your pearls.”

“Oh! Daddy, not my pearls!” Jenny said. “But you can have Rosy, my favorite doll. Remember her? You gave her to me last year for my birthday. And you can have her tea party outfit, too. Okay?”

“Oh no, darling, that’s okay.” Her father brushed her cheek with a kiss. “Good night, little one.”

A week later, her father once again asked Jenny after her story.

    “Do you love me?”

“Oh yes, Daddy, you know I love you.”

“Well, then, give me your pearls.”

“Oh, Daddy, not my pearls! But you can have Ribbons, my toy horse. Do you remember her? She’s my favorite. Her hair is so soft, and you can play with it and braid it and everything. You can have Ribbons if you want her, Daddy,” the little girl said to her father.

“No, that’s okay,” her father said and brushed her cheek again with a kiss. “God bless you, little one. Sweet dreams.”

Several days later, when Jenny’s father came in to read her a story, Jenny was sitting on her bed and her lip was trembling. “Here, Daddy,” she said, and held out her hand. She opened it and her beloved pearl necklace was inside. She let it slip into her father’s hand.

With one hand her father held the plastic pearls and the other he pulled out of his pocket a blue velvet box. Inside of the box were real, genuine, beautiful pearls. He had had them all along. He was waiting for Jenny to give up the cheap stuff so that he could give her the real thing.

1Why did the mother tell Jenny the plastic pearl necklace “cost an awful lot of money”?

A.She was discouraging Jenny from buying it.

B.She was telling Jenny to ask her grandma for help.

C.She was reminding Jenny of its true value.

D.She was encouraging Jenny to get it by her hard work.

2Which of the following was NOT related to the fact that Jenny could get the plastic pearl necklace?

A.She promised to work on the housework hard.

B.She was lucky to have her birthday coming near.

C.She went out with her mother to run errands.

D.She got supported from her grandma with a dollar bill.

3The last time the father came in to read Jenny a story, why was her lip trembling?

A.She was disappointed that her father always asked for her necklace.

B.She was pleased to give the necklace to her father.

C.She was struggling in her mind about the decision to make.

D.She was unwilling to exchange her necklace for the real one.

4Which of the following is the most suitable for the title of the story?

A.The Real Pearl Necklace B.The Parental Hidden Love

C.The Decision of Honesty D.The Choice of Luck

  • 23、   My mother was an excellent housekeeper. She had a few surgeries over the years, and before each one she’d have my father move the stove out from the wall so she could clean behind it. It would have been hard for her to relax in the hospital if she knew there were dust balls behind the stove.

The entire house was tidy and organized – there was a place for everything and everything

was in its place. Mom would hang the sheets outside to dry rather than inside the house. And if storm clouds gathered, she would run outside, race down to the sheets, throw them into a bag, and then race back to the house as the rain started, satisfied that a major catastrophe had been avoided. Throughout our entire childhoods, my sisters and I were spoiled with fresh bedding and cookies fresh from the oven.

There’s something beautiful about freshness, like the beginning of a school year, the start of a marriage, the birth of a child, moving to a new place, or starting a new job.

Freshness is like opening a new calendar that isn’t yet filled with neglected tasks. A new year always means a chance at a fresh start. But the question is, how do we choose to make this new start?

Maybe I need to do some housekeeping myself. A good sweeping usually leads to finding some interesting things – an old memory or two and new hobbies that fell by the wayside. Perhaps it’s time to clean out all those drawers filled with junk – the ones holding old tapes that replay the things I regret doing and the things that I wish I had done.

My personality could use some polish (亮光剂) as well – the ability to listen more than I talk. Glass cleaner (玻璃清洁剂) would be a good idea too – something to give me a clearer view of the things that matter and the things that don’t.

Cleaning is rarely my first choice of activity, but I’m ready to go and do what needs to be done. Here’s to a fresh start and a new year.

1What can we learn about the author’s mother according to the article?

A.She prefer rainy days to sunny days.

B.She couldn’t bear anything to be unorganized in her house.

C.She required her daughters to wash their own bedding.

D.She ask her husband to do the housekeeping during her surgeries.

2What does the author think about her childhood?

A.She has forgotten it B.It was painful for her.

C.It was full of happiness. D.She was spoiled by her mother.

3Why does the author decide to do some housekeeping herself?

A.She see it as a chance to improve herself and move on.

B.She wants to help reduce her mother’s burden.

C.She is quite bothered by her messy house.

D.She thinks it’s time to learn some life skills.

4The author wrote this article mainly to ______

A.give advice on how to clean the house.

B.inspire people’s thought and plan for the new year.

C.share the story of her mother’s strength.

D.recall her mother sisters and father.

  • 24、There is hope for our planet’s survival. Innovative products are being designed to reduce our dependence on plastic, single-use plastic in particular.

One such innovation comes from international design firm Carlo Ratti Associati with its “Feel the Peel” machine, an experimental rounded juice bar that not only makes freshly squeezed orange juice, but also 3D prints a recyclable bioplastic cup with the leftover orange peels.

Designed with global energy company Eni, the juicer is 10 feet tall and topped with a massive dome (圆顶), feeding the juicer with oranges on demand. The dome is made up of round tracks that hold up to 1, 500 oranges. A 3D printer is set up in the base of the machine.

The machine goes like magic. When an order is placed, the oranges slide down the tracks to a squeezer, and the juice is then deposited into an “orange peel (果皮)” bio-plastic cup, ready to enjoy. Meanwhile, the freshly squeezed peels fall down a tube and gather at the bottom of the machine where they are dried, milled (碾磨) and mixed with Polylactic Acid, creating a bioplastic material. The bioplastic is then heated and melted into a filament (丝状物) and the 3D printer then creates recyclable bioplastic cups, ready to be filled with freshly squeezed juice.

How cool that is! It seems that Carlo Ratti Associati and Eni have plans to take “Feel the Peel’ beyond just orange juice.

“The principle of recycling is a must for today’s objects,” says Carlo Ratti, “Working with Eni, we tried to show recycling in a very tangible (有形的) way, by developing a machine that helps us to understand how oranges can be used well beyond their juice. The next improvement of “Feel the Peel” might include new functions, such as printing fabric for clothing from orange peels.”

【1】What is the aim of creating the “Feel the Peel” machine?

A.To make orange juice taste better.

B.To produce single use plastic cups.

C.To increase the output of orange juice.

D.To take something beyond just orange juice.

【2】What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?

    A.How the new juicer works.

    B.What the two companies share.

C.Where the new tool comes from.

    D.Why the machine is popular.

【3】We can infer from what Carlo Ratti said that __________.

A.recycling can be shown in a very popular way

B.their new machine still has some potential

C.his company is very interested in Eni’s design

D.a product can help us understand our world

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

A.Orange Peels Are Turned Into Treasure

    B.Innovative Products Are Being Designed

C.Orange Juicer 3D Prints Bioplastic Cups

    D.Carlo Invents A Recyclable Machine
