21、There is no doubt that the United States has entered a brand new age, because Donald Trump, the country’s 45th president, is very different from any president before him. Unlike Hillary Clinton, his opponent, and most former US presidents, who entered the election after years of being politicians, Trump, 70, was a New York real estate businessman (房地产商). And he was not a presidential candidate who worked hard to keep a perfect public image of a man who was always caring, fair and wise.
Instead, Trump is famous for being bad-tempered, arrogant and hateful toward those who disagree with him. He also hates immigrants, both from Latin America and the Middle East, for many problems in the US. This has caused a dangerous division in the country - a country made up of many various races.
But to his supporters, the fact that Trump is not a typical politician is actually one of his advantages. His habit of never hiding his opinions is also considered by many to be a sign that he is not a hypocrite like many politicians are.
“We have seen our country take a downturn in the eyes of the world. We need to go in a different direction,” Binyomin Weisswasser, 39, a man from Chicago, told the Chicago Tribune. “Trump’s not a politician… I like that he is not always politically correct and speaks his mind. It gives me the feeling that what you see is what you get. You may not like it, but you know what it is.”
But interestingly, many who elected Trump actually followed the “lesser of two evils” principle — one that people use when faced with picking from two unpleasant options - simply because they didn’t think Clinton was a better choice.
“He’s the candidate I disagree less with,” Jack Stucky, 20, a student at Norwestern University, told the Chicago Tribune. “I don’t think I’d say Donald Trump is going to be the best president ever, but I did think he’d be better than Hillary Clinton.”
It’s true that the US is entering a new age. It’s just not clear what kind of age it’s going to be.

22、Some of my earliest memories involve sitting with my dad in his study every night when he came home from the office. I’d watch as he put his personal items away: his watch, wallet, comb, and car keys. They would always occupy the same spot on the table every time.
Dad’s comb was bought when he married Mum. Every evening, he would smile, hand me the comb and say: “Be a good girl and help Daddy clean it, OK?” I was more than happy to do it. This seems a mundane task, but it brought me such joy at that time. I would excitedly turn the tap on, then brush the comb with a used toothbrush as hard as I could. Satisfied that I’d done a good job, I would proudly return the comb to Dad. He would smile at me and place the comb on top of his wallet.
About two years later, Dad left his sales job and started his own wholesale business. I started primary school. That was when things started to change. Dad’s business wasn’t doing so well, and our stable life started getting shaky. He didn’t come home as much as he used to. And when he did come home, it was always late, and I’d already be in bed. I started to get mad. Why didn’t he listen to Mum and just stick to his old job? Why take the risk and place the whole family in trouble? Over the years, I stopped waiting for him to come home, and stopped going downstairs to check on him.
Now 28, I’ve graduated from college and got a job. Dad’s business has also started to get back on track. Yet the uncomfortable silence between Dad and me went on.
Two days before my birthday last year, Dad came home early. On that evening, I helped him carry his bags into his study as usual. When I turned to leave, he asked me to clean his comb. I looked at him for a while, then took the comb and headed to the sink. It was a new comb. I hadn’t noticed that he’d changed it. I brushed the comb, and it hit me then: why, as a child, helping my dad clean his comb was such a joy.
I passed the clean comb back to Dad. This time, I noticed my dad had aged. But his smile was still as heartwarming as before. Dad carefully placed his comb on top of his wallet. After so many years, I guess some things never change. And for that, I’m glad.

23、Professional rock climber Emil Harrington has made history after successfully free climbing Yosemite National Park’s El Capitan last Wednesday.
Harrington, 34, became the fourth person—and the first woman – to ever scale the 3,000-foot El Capitan without the help of a rope or other equipment. “The people before me who have achieved this are kind of like some of my heroes in rock climbing,” she said, “so it feels pretty special to join that group.”
But Harrington’s climb was not without injury—at one point, she slid and was left with a serious wound on her forehead that required her to take a break. “I took a fall and I couldn’t get my feet out and my head actually hit the wall,” she recalled. “I got this would on my forehead. I rested a little bit longer, bandaged it up, and then tried again,” Harrington said, adding that although she “kind of didnt really want to try again,” she powered through because “I felt like I should try again.”
After 21 hours and 13 minutes, Harrington scaled all of El Capitan, achieving a feat(壮举) she failed to finish twice last year. “That was my life dream. I achieved it,” she said.

24、Technoference (科技入侵) is defined as everyday interruptions (打扰) in face-to-face interactions because of technological devices. Studies showed that parents use devices for nine hours per day on average. Smartphones are often used during family activities such as meals, playtime, and bedtime—all important times involved in shaping a child’s emotional well-being. When parents are on their devices, they have fewer conversations with their children, and pay less attention to them.
In one study, 172 two-parent families with a child aged 5 years or younger answered online questionnaires about family relationships. Participants showed how often different devices interrupted their activities with their children.
They rated their child’s behavior, such a show often they got upset or how easily their feelings were hurt. The parents also reported their own levels of stress and depression (沮丧), the support they received from their partners, and their children’s screen media use.
In almost all cases, devices were part of parent-child interactions during the day. Technology may serve as a way for parents to deal with difficult child behavior. However, it has its drawbacks.
Electronic device use means parents can’t provide meaningful emotional support and positive feedback to their children, which causes behavior such as crying. But this adds to parents’ stress levels. Parents are likely to spend more time with their technological products, and the cycle continues.
“These results showed that relationships between parent technoference and child behavior influence each other over time,” said McDaniel. “Parents who have children with behavioral problems become more stressed, which may lead to them using technology more, which in turn may contribute to more problems with their children.”
So, it seems like the best solution to a difficult relationship between a parent and their child would be to simply spend more time with each other, and less time on their smartphones or computers.
