二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The concepts of green Games and sustainability have been embedded(嵌入)in the entire process of preparing for and delivering the Beijing Winter Olympics, Li Sen, an official from the organizing committee stressed on Wednesday.

China plans to peak its carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality(碳中和)before 2060. At Beijing 2022, the country is translating those promises into concrete actions. Beijing made hosting carbon-neutral Games a key component of its bid(努力) for the 2022 Winter Olympics, Li said, adding that it has fulfilled this promise in terms of venues(场馆), energy, transportation and even administrative work.

Six venues used for the 2008 Summer Olympics have been transformed for use at the 2022 Winter Games, including the Water Cube—also called the "Ice Cube" for the duration of Beijing 2022—the Capital Indoor Stadium and Wukesong Arena. “Reusing the old venues has reduced carbon emissions compared to the alternative of building new ones,” Li added.

As for ecological conservation, he said organizers have put resource saving and environmental friendliness in the first place. “We have implemented integrated(整体的) plans for ecological conservation to protect the mountains and rivers,” Li said.

When mentioning the Yanqing competition zone, Li said that organizers carried out environmental impact assessment work before the Games and integrated sustainability into the planning and construction of the venues, including the protections of plants. “We relocated those plants in the construction area to nearby spots or other conservation areas where they are carefully tended to and are growing well,” Li said.

Beijing 2022’s sustainability plans have gained praise from the International Olympic Committee. “In the time of Beijing 2008 and Beijing 2022, the commitment to sustainability has advanced remarkably, both in sport and in Beijing ,” said Marie Sallois, IOC director of corporate and sustainable development.

【1】Which of the following statements is true according to the text?

A.It will take China 30 years to reduce carbon emission.

B.Beijing has made special efforts to make the 2022 Olympics carbon neutral Games.

C.Beijing will use media to broadcast the concept of green Olympics.

D.Beijing has promised to cut down the use of venues, energy and transportation.

【2】What’s the purpose of reusing the old venues and relocating the plants?

    A.To save energy

    B.To cut down expense

    C.To ensure a sustainable development.

D.To protect the original state of the places.

【3】What can we infer from Marie Sallois’ words?

A.The 2008 and 2022 Beijing Olympics are both successful.

B.Beijing has made its commitment to host two Olympics.

C.The 2022 Winter Olympics have greater impact than the 2008 Olympics .

D.Beijing has been making great progress in hosting green Olympics.

【4】Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.Efforts made in planning the 2022 Winter Olympics

B.Sustainability highlighted in the 2022 Winter Olympics

C.Benefits gained from delivering the 2022 Winter Olympics

D.Experience shared in successfully holding the two Beijing Olympics.

  • 22、Some bees seem to be able to choose whether to become a worker or a queen — but thousands of competitors for the throne (王位) are killed in each hive (蜂巢).

About one-fifth of all Melipona beecheii bee larvae (幼虫) start to develop as queens, but the colony accepts only one. The rest are attacked by strong-jawed workers.

Biologists suspected that colonies of this species overproduce queens as an evolutionary strategy to take over other hives. But it now seems that it is simply a result of the “selfishness” of individual larvae, to the detriment of the whole colony, says Caliari Oliveira at KU Leuven in Belgium.

Unlike most bee colonies where workers select one larva to become the only queen by feeding it a special diet, the M. beecheii colony is spending a lot of resources to produce new individuals, and then all they do afterwards is waste those resources and kill the queens. “This is a very good example of the tragedy of the commons, when a chase for personal gain harms society,” says Caliari Oliveira.

In the past, researchers suggested that M. beecheii workers were feeding a chemical called geraniol (香叶醇) to the future queens. Oliveira and his colleagues wondered if the bees chose so many queens in order to spread the colony’s DNA into other hives.

To investigate further, they took genetic samples of queens and workers from 25 free -ranging M. beecheii colonies. In the lab, they also gave higher doses of geraniol to more than 600 larvae. To their surprise, they discovered that extra geraniol didn’t affect larval development, so workers weren’t controlling queen production after all. Genetic analysis revealed that the DNA of each hive remained 100 per cent consistent.

The new study “settles a bit of a controversy” about Melipona bees, says Christoph Grueter at the University of Bristol, UK. But it doesn’t offer a new explanation for how the larvae “decide” to become queens. “For me, this is still one of the biggest puzzles in biology.”

【1】What does the underlined phrase “to the detriment of” mean in Paragraph 3?

    A.Taking charge of.

    B.Falling victim to.

    C.Providing support for.

    D.Causing damage to.

【2】Why did the researchers feed extra geraniol to the larvae?

    A.To test their assumption.

    B.To simplify their research.

    C.To apply new techniques.

    D.To confirm previous findings.

【3】What does Christoph Grueter think of the new study?

    A.It is fruitless.

    B.It is innovative.

    C.It is insufficient.

    D.It is satisfactory.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

A.Some bee colonies adopt effective evolutionary strategies.

B.Some bee colonies have to kill thousands of wannabe queens.

C.Some bee species overproduce queens to conquer other hives.

D.Some bee species rely on a chemical to spread the colony’s DNA.

  • 23、As I walk along the sidewalk, I never think I will take part in such a relay(接力)race . A car turns up. I look up and notice the elderly couple in the car heading toward me. As the car rolls past, the driver suddenly collapses(倒下)against the wheel . He passes out, right in front of my eyes. His wife, a pale woman in her mid-eighties, is staring out the passenger side window then.

I begin to run alongside the moving car, “Roll down(摇下)the window!” I shout wildly to her. Confused, she complies. With the window down, I am able to hold the doorframe. I pull hard against the force of the moving car. Only then does the lady realize what is happening. On the far side of the car, the traffic goes by in the opposite direction, one after another. Nobody even seems to notice. The whole scene is so unlikely. So impossible.

Just then, a woman appears from behind me. She runs alongside the driver side door. She opens the door and, as the car is slowing, she manages to change it out of “Drive” . The car is now stopped. A joyful “We did it!” feeling sweeps over me.

The next problem: the man’s not breathing.

Thoughts start running through my mind: I need to start CPR(心肺复苏术) … You can’t do CPR on a person sitting in a car … There’s no way I can lift this guy out … He has about five minutes until he’s dead.

I can’t help shaking. Over my shoulder, I notice a black SUV has pulled up behind us. A man is standing beside me and says, “I’m a doctor.” I step back. He quickly unfastens the driver’s seat belt, carries him to the sidewalk and begins CPR.

I walk around to the passenger window to check on the elderly lady. With tears in eyes and hands shaking, she can only manage to speak softly, “Will he be okay?”

“I hope so,” I tell her.

    And he is.

【1】What happens when the driver of the car collapses?

A.His wife shouts to a passenger.

B.The passing cars try to avoid him.

C.A woman rolls down the car’s window.

D.The passenger pays no attention to him.

    A.Doubts.

    B.Refuses.

    C.Follows the order.

    D.Accepts the reality.

【3】Why does the author step back in paragraph 6?

    A.To look for a professional.

B.To check on the elderly lady.

C.To let the doctor take over.

D.To ask other passengers for help.

【4】Which is the best title for the text?

A.A Relay Race to Save Life

    B.A Small Act of Kindness

    C.An Exciting Adventure

    D.A Lucky Elderly Couple

  • 24、As an elementary school student in New York City, Robert Lee would stare in disbelief at his classmates throwing about half-eaten sandwiches after lunch. His Korean immigrant parents had taught him and his older brother not to waste food.

While studying finance and accounting at New York University, Robert remembered this lesson and joined Two Birds One Stone, a food-rescue club on campus that delivered, five days a week, leftovers (剩饭菜) from the dining hall to nearby homeless shelters.

When Robert and fellow club member Louisa entered a college entrepreneurship (创业) contest, they proposed a slightly different idea for a food-rescue non-profit group: They would gladly pick up one bag of leftover bagels or a single pot of soup, would operate seven days a week, and would be staffed entirely by volunteers.

Their idea won the competition. With the$1, 000 prize, they founded Rescuing Leftover Cuisine (RLC) in July 2013. In just the first few weeks, Robert’s team delivered a donation of enough spaghetti and meatballs to feed 20 people in line at a New York City homeless shelter that had run out of food.

Robert, who had taken job as an analyst at J.P. Morgan, devoted his spare time to creating a network of New York City restaurants that agreed to donate food, and he enlisted volunteers to make food deliveries to homeless shelters. To date, RLC has distributed more than 250, 000 pounds of food in 12 cities around the country.

Only a year into his finance job, Robert gave up his six-figure salary to focus on RLC. “I compared one hour of impact at J.P. Morgan to one hour at RLC, and the difference was just huge,” he says. He’s now the group’s only full-time employee.

“One shelter recently told us that our donations allow them to provide entire dinners for more than 300 people, three nights a week,” Robert says. “Things like that make me glad I quit my job.”

【1】How did Robert feel about his classmates’ behaviour?

    A.Angry.

    B.Concerned.

    C.Pitiful.

    D.Astonished.

【2】What did Robert do at New York University in addition to study?

B.He co-founded Rescuing Leftover Cuisine (RLC).

C.He established a food-rescue club to make better use of leftovers.

D.He fully focused his attention on study.

【3】What did Robert give up to completely devote himself to RLC?

    A.His college education.

    B.His health.

    C.His well-paid job.

    D.His spare time.

【4】What might Robert want to focus in his life?

    A.Public welfare.

    B.Public recognition.

    C.Personal wealth.

    D.Finance and accounting.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Every once in a while, as FedEx driver Aubrey made her regular delivery slops in a neighborhood in rural southeastern Indiana, she’d come across a young boy playing basketball with a broken hoop (球筐).

The boy was so joyful playing basketball, which stuck with Aubrey and reminded her of the past days as a kid, when the sport was her safe harbor. She was bullied (欺负) for years in school, so basketball was a shelter away from her life as a kid. She had a neighbor install (安装) a basketball hoop for her across the street because he knew how much she loved it.

Aubrey just wouldn’t stop thinking about it and she really wanted to get the boy a hoop. Months later, Aubrey decided to get the 11-year-old boy, Elijah, a new hoop and had the hoop installed while the family wasn’t home. With her surprising gift she left a note: “Just want you to have the best hoop that will grow with you and all your friends,” she wrote, signing it as “just one of the FedEx drivers in the area.”

After installing the hoop and leaving the note, Aubrey didn’t return to the neighborhood for weeks. She thought the family wouldn’t realize it was her, but she was more than satisfied to know in her heart she probably “made the kid’s day.” It turned out she did a lot more than that.

Elijah’s mother read the note, and the moment she realized who it was from, she just immediately started to cry. Elijah’s family had gone through a difficult year, with the deaths of four family members and his father suffering a serious injury. Her gift changed their lives.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
