二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、My father was a close friend of Albert Einstein. As a boy and then as an adult, I never lost my wonder at the personality that was Einstein. He was the only person I knew who had come to terms with (安于现状)himself and the world around him. He knew what he wanted and he wanted only this: to understand within his limits as a human being the nature of the universe and the logic and simplicity in its functioning. He knew there were answers beyond his understanding. But this did not frustrate him. He was pleased to go as far as he could.

In the 23 years of our friendship, I never saw him show jealousy, vanity, bitterness, anger, resentment, or personal ambition. He didn't seem to be affected by these emotions. He was beyond any pretension (做作).

To do his work he needed only a pencil only a pencil and a pad of paper. Matenal things meant nothing to him. I never knew him to carry money because he never had any use for it. He believed in simplicity, so much so that he used only a safety razor (剃刀)and water to shave. When I suggested that he try shaving cream, he said, "The razor and water do the job. "

"But Professor, why don’t you try the cream (膏状物)just once? " I argued. "Il makes shaving smoother and less painful".

He shrugged. Finally, I presented him with a tube of shaving cream. The next morning when he came down to breakfast, he was cheerful with the pleasure of a new, great discovery. "You know, that cream really works," he announced. "It doesn't pull the beard. It feels wonderful. n Thereafter, he used the shaving cream every morning until the tube was empty. Then he returned to using plain water.

Einstein was purely a theorist. He didn't have the slightest interest in the practical application of his ideas and theories. His E=mc2 is probably the most famous equation in history - yet Einstein wouldn't walk down the street to see a reactor(反应堆)create atomic energy.

One puzzle that Einstein could never understand was his own fame. He had developed theories that were profound and capable of exciting relatively few scientists. Yet his name was a household word across the civilized world. "I’ve had good ideas, and so have other men, " he once said. "But it's been my good fortune that my ideas have been accepted". He was bewildered by his fame: people wanted to meet him; strangers stared at him on the street; scientists, statesmen, students, and housewives wrote him letters. He never could understand why he received this attention, why he was singled out as something special.

【1】The writer wrote this article to show ________.

A.Einstein was a simple, modest and ordinary man.

B.Einstein had an endless curiosity about science.

C.Einstein only concerned himself with theoretical things.

D.Einstein and the writer had a long period of friendship.

【2】Why did Einstein not use cream when shaving?

A.Because Einstein never carried money to buy one tube of that.

B.Because Einstein wanted to keep things simple.

C.Because Einstein felt great with only razor and water.

D.Because Einstein always thought about theoretical things.

【3】What does the underlined word in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Disappointed.

    B.Annoyed.

    C.Angry.

    D.Confused

【4】In the writer's eyes, which group of words can best describe Einstein?

    A.creative and imaginative

    B.ambitious and jealous

    C.satisfied and modest

    D.practical and greedy

  • 22、When asked in 1993 to comment on accusations that the movie In the Name of the Father distorts (曲解) contemporary British and Irish history, female lead Emma Thompson responded that she couldn't care less. Even since the premiere (首映) in 1915 of The Birth of a Nation, filmmakers have rewritten history to create top-dollar entertainment. The films are very persuasive: well-made movies hold your interest continuously, drawing your attention to “what happens next,” and pulling you forward with no time to reflect on individual scenes until the final credits roll. The result: you don't remember much about a movie after watching it for the first time. For this reason, movies have extraordinary power - unmatched by any other medium - to leave you with a strong sense of what is right and what is wrong, who is bad and who is good, even though critical details presented in the movies may be false.

Well, so what? They're just movies. In fact they're not just movies. Millions of Americans are devoted history lovers, and they pack theatres every time new movies about historical figures or events come to town. Saving private Ryan and Titanic drew viewers and cash for months. Many high school teachers screen movies in the classroom. Clearly countless Americans get most of their history from television and the big screen.

Some of the industry's finest historical and period films premiered during the past decades. But the 1960s also saw a number of politically charged history-based movies full of factual distortions and, occasionally, outright lies. Today the trend continues on a larger scale: many movies released in the 1990s and the first decade of the 21*t century reflect lack of respect for solid, reliable history.

History Goes to the Movies is a source of information and, it is hoped, entertainment for everyone interested in the actual history behind a wide selection of movies grouped into twelve sections--11 covering historical periods and events and twelfth containing biographies and period films. Each movie review includes an essay on the history covered in one or more movies, and a brief plot summary. Star ratings (five stars: don't miss it) reflect each movie's historical accuracy and - to a much lesser extent --- its power to amuse.

Obviously, expecting textbook accuracy from movies would be ridiculous-and producers have delivered a remarkable number of historically faithful movies. But some of them get too much of their history wrong. History Goes to the Movies is a guide, however imperfect, for readers and viewers aiming to get it right.

【1】Emma Thompson said ________ that In the Name of the Father was historically inaccurate.

    A.it didn't matter.

    B.it was upsetting.

    C.It aroused her attention.

    D.it wasn't obvious.

【2】By “in fact they're not just movies” (in paragraph 2), the author means that________.

A.some movies are much more profitable than others

B.movies serve more purposes than entertaining views

C.movies tend to provide viewers with false details

D.the movies about historical figures attract history lovers

【3】Which of the following is true of History Goes to the Movies?

A.It is aimed at those who take interest in biographies.

B.It rates a movie mainly according to how amusing it is.

C.It introduces a movie's story as well as its related history.

D.It focuses on the movies that presented history in a funny way.

【4】The passage is mainly intended to ________.

A.criticize the film industry's favoring entertainment over truth

B.point out which films presented history in a wrong way.

C.call on film directors to show respect for history

    D.introduce a book involving history-based films

  • 23、   I have been dancing since I was 14 years old, when my best friend dragged me to an after-school dance class. I enjoyed that dance class so much that I have been dancing ever since. After every dance class, however, I always have to stretch out my legs and back, as dancing can be quite a tough workout! It feels like as much exercise as going to the gymbut dancing is not widely considered to be a sport.

Many dancers would argue that dancing is a sport, as it requires great physical stamina (耐力), strong muscles and impressive flexibility. No matter what style of dance you are participating in, you will always be using all of your muscles while dancing and this can often be for several hours a day. Additionally, in the more traditional dance styles (such as ballet and contemporary dance), men often lift their female dance partners up in the air. The strength that dancers need means that they are often just as athletic as footballers, runners or swimmers.

On the other hand, many people argue that dance is an art form. Dances often exhibit emotion, show characters and tell stories. Dancing to music is creative and visually appealing to the eyes and ears. It is easy to see why many people consider dance to be an art form. I personally believe that dance is both a sport and an art. I believe that a great dancer will be a mixture of an athlete and an artist.

However, whether you consider dance to be an art or a sport, the important thing is to enjoy it! Dancing is a great way to make new friends and it’s a really fun way to exercise!

1Why did the author fall in love with dancing?

A.Because she got inspired by her best friend.

B.Because she found the dance class was for free.

C.Because dancing might be the best form of exercise.

D.Because dancing was the most challenging task.

2What can we learn according to the second paragraph?

A.A ballet dancer should be tall and strong. .

B.In some ways dancers are similar to athletes.

C.Most dancers find it hard to practice for several hours.

D.The traditional dance styles often cost more energy.

3Why do some people think dance is an art form?

A.Because they think it is just like watching a play.

    B.Because dancing merely brings amusement.

C.Because they think it is funny to watch dance.

D.Because dancers tell stories while dancing.

4In which part of a website can we read the passage?

    A.Fashion. B.Sport. C.Life around the world. D.Music.

  • 24、   I could not hear what was going on the other end of the phone, but it was making her cry, and I was crying too.

When I was younger, I used to watch my mum get ready for work in the morning, tracing the line of her lashes with eyeliner, putting on blouses and heels. She said that she liked how it made her feel. I saw her as somebody who would always be there to protect me, who was capable of anything.

The phone call in question was one that she had been waiting on for a few weeks: the final diagnosis of her breast cancer.

The process of treatment was slow and hellish. After the treatment, all her hair thinned, and she wore false eyelashes some days and penciled in the gaps in her eyebrows. My mother, who would never take naps or sleep past eight in the morning, was suddenly so exhausted by being awake that she would sometimes stay in bed for the whole day. Actually after the surgery, she felt too painful and weak to lift a gallon of milk.

She once asked me if I was glad to be aware of her illness. I spent the majority of the year of her treatment worrying but I told my mother that I was glad to have had the privilege of worrying.

Before my 13th birthday, I’d always considered a birthday to have fun and the joy of becoming a year older. Seeing my mom for the first time after surgery was the end of that. That isn’t to say that she had changed fundamentally; my mother was still beautiful and kind and incredibly strong, but the person that she was no longer tied to my ideas of her.

Growing up and beginning to see your parents as people are inseparable processes. That birthday was the turning point of a year that forced me to begin to see my mother as a person, someone whole and real.

1According to Paragraph 1, what most probably made the author cry?

    A.Mom’s tears. B.Breast cancer. C.The caller. D.Lack of attention.

2The author used to think of her mom as a/an   .

    A.patient B.housewife C.superhero D.ordinary being

3What does the underlined word “hellish” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Extremely unpleasant. B.Totally comfortable.

    C.Especially attractive. D.Slightly different.

4What can we learn from the passage?

A.Every man has its price. B.A miss is as good as a mile.

C.Misfortune promotes growth. D.A close mouth catches no flies.
