二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、In April of last year, I found my “spark bird”.

Back then, COVID-19 was spreading around the U.S. I had spent an awful month shut inside a New York apartment with a high-energy 14-month-old. One Saturday morning, eager to stretch my legs, I went out to Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery. There were not many people there, so I thought it should be safe.

As I walked around the graveyard, I noticed two sounds. The first was the murmur of five men standing in a half-circle, looking through their cameras like paparazzi (狗仔队). The second was some cheerful chatter that made me follow the men’s gaze upward. And that’s how I, too, became shocked by the monk parakeets of Green-Wood Cemetery. A few light-green birds poked their heads out of holes in their nest. Others flew to and from nearby trees freely. Watching them filled me with a peace I hadn’t felt in weeks.

That evening, I found myself researching parakeets, the bird that set me on the path to birding. Birding is a great way to receive the mental benefits of observing nature. It provides a thrill of discovery that was painfully rare when our lives were disturbed by COVID-19. And there’s such a low barrier to entry ― you don’t even need to leave home to get started. So I found myself one of the birders in the Brooklyn Bird Club.

The feeling I got from my experience made me think of something one birder said about the mindfulness the hobby can provide for everyone. “I’m always a firm believer of being in the present moment, and birding is being very in tune: listening to the trees, the wind, the bird calls, and not thinking about anything else.” Birds have, among many other things, re-taught me how to look and listen.

【1】The expression “spark bird” in paragraph 1 refers to a bird that ________.

    A.has just been born

    B.arouses one’s interest in birding

    C.provides people with freedom

D.likes to stretch its head out of its nest

【2】We can infer that the five men the author met at Green-Wood Cemetery were ________.

    A.birders

    B.educators

    C.hunters

    D.paparazzi

【3】What’s the purpose of writing this text?

    A.To introduce what birding is.

B.To avoid being disturbed by COVID-19.

C.To show the benefits of joining a bird club.

D.To show the author’s experience of becoming a birder.

  • 22、   Passwords don’t have to be a pain. There’s a way to choose and remember them with confidence. With the right approach, you can start using the process to your advantage, by setting passwords that also strengthen your memory.

Passwords should be complex and varied enough to be secure, yet still memorable. But with so many to keep track of, this can be hard to achieve. No wonder so many people use the same password over and over again or simply write them all down!

A much better idea is to follow a system. You save time at the setting stage, and have a clear pattern for your memory to follow. It’s good exercise for your brain and a valuable way to protect your identity online.

The following system uses letters, numbers and symbols, so it will please even the strictest website. And the random-looking codes it produces would be extremely difficult for someone to crack, but just enough of a challenge for your brain. First, choose a short quotation, one that no one would have any reason to associate with you. Pick out the initial letters-creating the first “building block” for your passwords. So, if you chose, “play it again, Sam”, you’d have the letters PIAS.

Next, choose a meaningful date-again, one that can’t be guessed or easily researched. Maybe the year of a favourite holiday, ‘86’, say.

Then add a random element by picking any two keyboard symbols: for example, & and $.

Finally, organize these building blocks in any order you like. And strengthen the code further by making some of the letters lower case, and some upper: maybe 86& $ PiAs.

Spend a little time getting to know this “foundation” for your passwords. “See” it in your mind’s eye. And then start using it as the basis for every new password you set. Add two or three extra letters each time, a few initials to remind you of what this particular password is for. For example, you might use CC for the camera club forum.

So the final password for your BBC account could be: BBC86&$ PiAs.

With a system like this, you’ve got a basic formula to follow. But each password ends up being complex and unique, helping to protect your identity and giving your memory a cracking workout every time.

    【1】For safety, a password must be ________.

    A.simple and easy to remember.

B.long enough not to be broken.

    C.complicated but unforgettable.

    D.related to your personal information.

【2】What’s the second step in writing a new password?

    A.Find a proper number.

    B.Think of a short sentence.

    C.Add your account name.

    D.Choose two keyboard symbols.

【3】Which of the following may be a perfect password?

    A.QQ56@%PmP.

    B.VОA80*$

    C.+@12FsLtw

    D.WX89MhMLw

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.A password researcher.

    B.A method of designing passwords.

C.A way to exercise your brain.

    D.A teaching program about passwords.

  • 23、On Tuesday, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region saw 7, 596 new COVID-19 cases, the fourth day with new infections lower than 10, 000. That’s still a big number, but much better than 20,000 or 80,000 daily infections earlier and at the peak. The fifth wave of COVID-19 is finally peaking, with the end not so far away.

Behind that positive change are the tireless efforts of the central government and the people on the mainland. As early as Feb 17, the central government dispatched the first team of experts to Hong Kong to help, followed by abundant supplies of medical equipment and materials.

That makes it especially absurd for a Bloomberg commentator to claim “the city is losing its DNA”. Hong Kong’s DNA lies in that of China, not the West. Respect for life, valuing people’s lives and saving lives at all costs is among the values of China from ancient to modern times. When it comes to COVID-19, the only priority is to save lives and avoid more losses, for which temporary lockdowns of communities and suspending flights are acceptable measures.

By saying such measures “restrict people’s freedom”, media outlets not only distort (歪曲) the efforts of the Chinese people, but also misread China. They ignore people’s lives, which is partly why the deaths caused by COVID - 19 have been over 1 million in the US. Its total infections and deaths both “lead” the world, which could have been avoided had the US learned some lessons from China.

With COVID-19 in Hong Kong on the downswing, the city is loosening its mandatory (强制性的) measures, anyway. That’s how freedom is ensured. Not by standing doing nothing and watching people die, but by taking effective measures to protect the people so COVID-19 is put under control.

【1】Why does the writer list out the numbers in Paragraph 1?

A.To introduce the exact numbers of the disease victims.

B.To illustrate the seriousness of the disease in Hong Kong.

    C.To show Hong Kong’s achievements against COVID-19.

D.To prove the successful end of COVID-19 in Hong Kong.

【2】What does the underlined word “dispatched” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Assigned.

    B.Coached.

    C.Joined.

    D.Inspected.

【3】What can we infer about the writer from the text?

A.He has strong prejudice against foreign cultures.

B.He has complete confidence in Chinese culture.

C.He tolerates the misunderstanding about China.

D.He understands people’s different values of life.

【4】Which section of a newspaper is the text taken from?

    A.Entertainment.

    B.Lifestyle.

    C.Business.

    D.Opinion.

  • 24、Herbal medicine (草药), which has been used for medicinal purposes, is the use of plants to treat diseases. Many herbalists use the entire plant, from the flowers, stems, leaves, and roots, in the form of everything from teas to pills. These plants contain natural, chemical things that can treat the body for a variety of diseases- such as allergies, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, migraine, chronic fatigue, and cancer, among others.

Nowadays an increasing number of people prefer to adopt these plants to treat their diseases because, compared with chemical medicine, herbal medicine has its own advantages. Herbal medicine and remedies (治疗) are more effective than chemical medicine for certain diseases. The chemical medicine given by a chemist could have certain negative side effects. However, many of the herbal medicine and remedies do not have negative side effects. If any, they are softer than chemical medicine. Obesity is the cause of many of the health problems. Herbal medicine can help weight-loss more effectively and improve overall health.

However, the cure using herbal medicine and supplements (营养品) would take some time, and therefore people are supposed to possess enough patience. Worse still, herbal medicine contains a variety of ingredients (成分) and people have to be sure that their body agrees with the ingredients and that it is not allergic (过敏).

A point worth mentioning here is herbal remedies and medicine for certain illnesses may have negative side effects. These side effects may not be shown at once, but would take months or even years. In the early stages, if the herbal medicine is not agreeing with you, it is wise to stop using it.

When used correctly and directed by doctors, herbs can help treat a variety of diseases. But keep in mind that the herbal medicine industry is not regulated, so herbal products are often misleading and may contain additives (添加剂) and that are not listed on the label (标签). Some herbs may cause allergic reactions or interact with other drugs, and some are poisonous if used improperly or at high doses (剂量). Taking herbs on your own increases your risk.

1What is the main idea of Paragraph 1?

    A. The origin of herbal medicine.

    B. The history of herbal medicine.

    C. The definition and function of herbal medicine.

    D. The naturally harmless characteristics of herbal medicine.

2How does the author explain the advantages of herbal medicine?

    A. By using examples.

    B. By making a comparison.

    C. By analyzing research statistics.

    D. By performing lots of experiments.

3What is the author’s attitude towards herbal medicine?

    A. Negative.   B. Disapproving.

    C. Unclear.   D. Supportive.

4Which of the following will the author agree with?

    A. Choose safe herbal medicine freely.

    B. Take herbal medicine under the guidance of doctors.

    C. Use herbs together because the combination is more effective.

    D. Purchase herbal medicine from reliable manufacturers to ensure quality.
