21、Every year, Americans send millions of tons of food to the landfill (垃圾填埋地). What if you could use all of those rotten vegetables to heat your home? That’s happening in one unlikely laboratory: the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plan in Brooklyn
The plant’s longtime manager, Jimmy Pynn, shows off the plant’s crown jewels: eight huge, shiny, oval-shaped steel tanks known as digester eggs. Each one contains millions of gallons of black material that’s roughly pea soup. Pynn calls it “black gold”. “The digesters like to be fed like us: three times a day,” he says. “They like to be kept warm, 98 degrees. And that’s what we have these guys for: to make methane(甲烷),which can be used to heat homes or make electricity.”
Right now, what these bacteria are digesting is mostly sewage(污水) mud. But they are being introduced to a new diet food scraps. The hope is that this plant will soon take in hundreds of tons of organic waste from houses and apartments.
“Cardboard packaging, rotten tomatoes, fats, oils, old diary products--those are all great food-stuff for a digester,” says Paul Sellew. “My micro-organisms love that. That’s their five-course meal.”
“Everything in New York City is like big scale when you’re talking about quantities of waste,” says Samantha MacBride. “Right now, it’s all in its infancy. When you’re in an apartment building, to separate out food scraps, it requires a lot of effort and attention,” says MacBride. “It doesn’t have to have unpleasant smell or be inconvenient. But it takes extra work. It’s the first, what I will call the baby step,” says Paul Sellew. “Because ultimately in New York City, just the restaurants alone, you’re talking well over a million tons a year,” he says.
This new industry is trying to build more plants and digesters to handle all of that waste, says Sellew. The costliest part may be finding good locations in or around the nation’s biggest cities.
As for the trillions of bacteria? They’ll work for free--- as long as you feed them.

A. To get black gold from daily waste.

【3】What might be the biggest difficulty to build more plants?

【4】The tone of the last sentence is________.

22、 Shortly before Christmas last year, one of Brazilian pianists Joao Carlos Martins invited his friends to a bar near his home. He wanted to show them the best gift he had received: a new pair of gloves. They are not just any gloves, however. The special bionic devices let the 79-year-old pianist play with both hands for the first time in more than 20 years.
By his retirement last March, Martins had received 24 medical operations to try to reduce pain caused by a disease and from a series of accidents. Before the gloves, which were especially developed for him, Martins could only play songs slowly with his thumbs and, sometimes, his pointer fingers.
However, one designer believed Martins’ retirement had come too early. The designer, Ubirata Bizarro Costa, created special bionic gloves for Martins’ hands. The gloves help move his fingers up after they press on the piano keys. Costa said he created early models based on images of Martins’ hands, but he said those models were not good. He then decided to tell Martins about his work. Costa and Martins then spent several months testing different models. Finally, the perfect model came in December, and cost only $125.
These days, Martins never takes off his new gloves, even when he goes to sleep. Martins said, “I have received more than 100 devices in the last 50 years. None of those devices worked well or long enough, but these gloves do. ”
The new gloves have given Martins a new goal. He hopes to play the piano at New York’s Carnegie Hall in October. He is already set to conduct a concert celebrating the 60th anniversary of his first appearance there.
【1】What can we know about Joao Carlos Martins?
A.He enjoys playing the piano in a bar. B.He has received the best gift in his life.

【2】What caused the pianist’s pain?
A.A failed operation. B.His friend's death.
C.The new pair of gloves. D.A disease and some accidents.
【3】How did Costa and Martins create the perfect bionic gloves?
A.By testing different models. B.By pressing Martins’ fingers.
C.By examining Martins’ hands. D.By working with other companies.
【4】What does Martins think of the special pair of gloves?
A.They are useless. B.They are strange.
C.They are satisfying. D.They are frightening.
23、3,900 feet below the surface, scientists in New Zealand found a “mysterious creature”. They discovered the newly-hatched ghost shark(魔鬼鲨) on the Chatham Rise, a part of the ocean floor located off the eastern coast of the South Island.
Ghost sharks are deep-water animals closely related to sharks and rays. These fish are also some-times called ratfish or rabbitfish.
They lay eggs on the seafloor where the embryos(胚胎) feed off the egg yolk(蛋黄) until they hatch. A scientist on the team who discovered the baby ghost shark said they were able to identify the shark as a baby because its stomach was still full of egg yolk.
“We don’t actually know much about ghost sharks,” said Brit Finucci, a fisheries scientist on the study. “What we do know mostly comes from adults of their species. So it’s very rare and very uncommon to find juveniles of a lot of these species, so that’s why I got quite excited.”
Because ghost sharks make their home in very deep water, they are difficult to study. While the exact species of ghost shark isn’t known yet, scientists hope this discovery will help inform them of the knowledge of this mysterious creature.
Scientists hope the “very rare” finding will fill in research gaps about the species. “We’re hoping this will give us some more indication about the biology and ecology,” said Finucci. Researchers are using this shark to account for biological differences between juvenile and adult members of the subclass. Finucci added, “We’re not sure what we’re going to find, which is also quite exciting.”
【1】How did the scientists identify the shark as a baby?
A.By its habitat.
B.By its appearance.
C.By the food it consumed.
D.By the eggs it laid.
【2】What does the underlined word “juveniles” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Grown-up fish.

B.It warns people to protect uncommon sea lives.
C.It may reveal unknown facts about ghost sharks.

26、The 6yearold kid watched in silence as the man behind the desk, the headmaster of the school, shook his head more than once to his mother.
Minutes later, mother and son walked slowly out of the school, her right hand holding his little hand, her left holding an umbrella to shield(遮挡) both of them from the sun.“Where are we going now, mother?”asked the kid, looking up at her.“To another school,”was her gentle reply. For some reason, the little kid had not been accepted by the school, and she was taking him to another,to try to get him registered. That was more than 50 years ago. That woman was my mother;that little kid was me.
Fifty years later, the day after my mother had slipped into a coma(昏迷) from a stroke,I sat next to her, holding her hand, stroking it,watching her body heaved up and down as she breathed heavily,as if she was struggling with something. Her eyes were closed, her mouth opened.I whispered softly to her,“Mum,it’s okay. You have given us everything. You can let go now.No need to struggle anymore,Mum.”
A few days later,Mum died.At her bedside,I spent some time just looking at my mother, soaking in the finality of her death. There she was,my mother, motionless and lifeless.I took hold of her still warm but lifeless hand, holding it for the last time, recalling every piece of the precious moment we spent together.
I finally let go of her hand—lifeless, yet having given so much life to so many of us,and placed it next to her body.I found myself saying silently to her the only words that came to my mind,“Goodbye Mum,thank you for everything.”
Thank you,Mother, for not giving up,so that I could go to school.Thank you for coaching me,for reading to me,for ironing my school uniforms, for combing my hair, for tying my shoe laces, for making sure I had a little handkerchief inside my pocket...
Rest in peace,Mother, you are still very much alive in us.Happy Mother’s Day.
