二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、One minute, Peggy Lewis and her husband were watching the trees blow in the wind outside their home. The next minute, they were surrounded by pieces of glass from the house’s broken windows. The roof tore off and the walls caved in. After the 152-mph tornado had passed, it took a team of neighbors to pull the couple from the rubble (瓦砾) and take them to the hospital. “I thought we were going to die,” says Lewis, 58. It was an unbelievable natural disaster in the United States.

When the pair returned to their home three days after that awful night last June, it was clear that the house would need to be cleared out. But before that, she wanted one thing-her family Bible (圣经). Lewis bought the Bible 35 years ago at the start of her marriage. Like many folks, she’d used it to hold and keep her family’s history.

The Bible was the first thing Lewis looked for when she returned to the house. It was on top of an antique dresser in her bedroom when she’d last seen it. In fact, the dresser wasn’t there at all. When two volunteers showed up to help the couple dig out, Lewis had one request for them: “If you can find anything, please find my Bible”.

After an hour of searching, a volunteer ran up to her. She cried loudly looking at the book in her hands. The young woman had found the Bible while searching through the rubble. Stunningly, while many books inside the home had been destroyed beyond recognition, the Bible was still perfect, even though it had sat in the rain for days. “I completely broke down,” says Lewis. “I thought it was gone forever. It was a miracle.”

Even slowly, the treasures reappeared in her life. The Bible and her treasures in it actually lived through the terrible disaster.

A.She lost her family after a tornado.

    B.A tornado destroyed her house.

    B.Protect volunteers from rain.

C.Explore the value of the Bible.

    D.Hunt for a family Bible.

    C.Surprisingly.

    D.Interestingly.

    B.To educate.

    C.To persuade.

    D.To instruct.

  • 22、   California’s Yosemite National Park is home to many stunning waterfalls. However, from mid-to-late February each year, the unlikely star of the preserve is Horsetail Fall-a small waterfall that forms over the eastern edge of the park’s famous vertical rock formation, El Capitan, every winter. That’s because, during the two-week-period, the temporary1,000-foot fall frequently transforms into a red “firefall” for about ten minutes a day during sunset.

For the phenomenon to occur, several conditions need to coincide. There must be enough snow and snow must be melted to form the waterfall. During drought years, Horsetail Fall is reduced to a trickle flowing slowly in drops or does not appear at all. Additionally, the skies have to be entirely clear. Even a slight mist is enough to ruin the illusion (错觉) of fire falling down the cliffs. Finally, the sun has to strike the water from the right angle to set the waterfall “burning” brightly.

The “firefall” has been popular with professional and amateur photographers since the 1940s.However, in recent years, thanks to social media, its fame has risen to new heights, with thousands of people flocking to the national park each February. In 2019, over 2,200 people crowded into the small viewing areas on February 22, the best day to see the light show last year. However, the visitors not only stepped on sensitive vegetation but also left behind large amounts of rubbish.

To prevent a repeat of the unfortunate incident, in 2020, the park service closed two of the ideal viewing areas. The only one open required a 1.5-mile-long hike. However, the 3-mile round-trip, as well as a warning by the officials that a dry spell turned the fall into a trickle, leaving the possibility of a “firefall” in doubt, didn’t not seem to have deterred fans. Hundreds of people made their way to Horsetail Fall to catch a glimpse of the light show. Hopefully, Horsetail Fall enthusiasts would be more respectful of the natural environment this time.

1When can the “firefall” be seen?

    A.About at dawn.

    B.Exactly at noon.

    C.Just before dusk.

    D.Late at night.

2Which of the following conditions must be met for the “firefall” to be visible?

A.The temperatures have to be warm enough.

B.Horsetail Fall must be reduced to a trickle.

C.There has to be enough slight fog in the sky.

D.The waterfall must be frozen down the cliff.

3What do we know from Paragraph 3?

A.The “firefall” was discovered by a photographer.

B.The viewing areas were equipped with telescopes.

C.Social media offer new tools to view the “firefall”.

D.The tourists caused the environmental pollution.

4What does the underlined word “deterred” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Disapproved. B.Discouraged.

    C.Disturbed. D.Distinguished.

  • 23、   Growing up in poverty can have long-term negative consequences for children. Now, a study offering unconditional cash to a group of mothers on low incomes in the US is beginning to discover the precise role of parental income in child development. It is the first randomised trial to look at whether a basic income might affect the way a child’s brain develops in this critical period.

We know that the first few years of a child’s life are the most influential for their development. Brain development is particularly rapid in early childhood and therefore more likely to be influenced by the environment.

Studies of children born into families with low incomes have found they tend to have more behavioural problems and are behind their peers when they start school. However, it isn’t clear whether low income directly leads to these outcomes, or whether they are a result of other factors associated with growing up in poverty.

To find out, Kimberly Noble at Columbia University in New York City and her colleagues approached women on low incomes who had just given birth at four sites in the US. The team is measuring several things throughout the study. At each yearly follow-up, children are assessed for measures like sleep quality, developmental milestones, overall health and emotional development. One unique aspect of the study is the use of mobile EEG headsets to monitor the infants’  brain activity in their home environments.

Almost $4 million has been given out through the study so far. Though it is too early to draw full conclusions, some preliminary results are already of interest. For example, some of the parents have allowed the researchers to keep track of their transactions. Those in the high-cash group appear to be spending more on books for their children, and spending more time reading together, according to surveys the team conducted. This is potentially good news because reading to infants is known to be good for cognitive development, vocabulary and promoting important bonds between adults and children.

Eventually, the findings could help with policy interventions to assist children born into poverty, or even to find ways to buffer against the effects of poverty later in life.

【1】The passage mainly intends to tell us that ________.

A.the early years of a child’s life are the most influential

B.money affects brain development in one’s childhood

C.women should earn more to promote children’s development

D.comprehensive measures are to be taken to assist the children

【2】The unconditional cash given out brings positive consequences possibly because ________.

A.the family can live a carefree life with the cash

B.the family can offer the children more nutrition

C.it helps to offer better environment for the children

D.it provides more time for the family to get together

【3】The underlined phrase “buffer against” in the last paragraph may mean ________.

    A.transform

    B.cause

    C.accelerate

    D.prevent

【4】How were the conclusions of the study proved?

    A.By making questionnaires.

    B.By taking randomised trials.

    C.By giving participants interviews.

    D.By doing follow-up researches.

  • 24、About 9 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean annually, that is, about 17 tons every minute. The United Nations(UN) reported that if ambitious actions are not taken, then the ocean will contain more plastic than fish by 2050.

Therefore, Yvan Bourgnon decided to do something. He created the association The SeaCleaners and set up a center devoted to the construction of a pioneering ship: the Manta. Using a special design, a hybrid propulsion (混合推进) system and a power supply from renewable energy sources, the high-tech ship will not only collect ocean waste but process it.

Ready to be launched in 2024, the Manta will operate autonomously 75% of the time without the use of coal or oil, and it will have the ability to extract between 5,000 and 10,000 tons of floating plastic each year as well as microplastics from 10mm deep to 1 meter deep. Even more impressively, its hybrid design means that this ship can operate for up to 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The ship is equipped with various systems, including a set of waste-collecting conveyor belts to bring the plastic from the ocean to the ship, three floatable systems to pick up waste on the surface, two smaller multipurpose collection rubber boats for parts of the ocean that the larger ship can’t access, and two cranes (吊车) to pull larger pieces from the water.

According to the designers, the first task of the Manta will take place in Southeast Asia. After that the Manta will operate in Africa and South America but will also appear in temporarily polluted areas following climatic or natural disasters.

After three weeks at sea, the Manta will be directed towards coastal ports in the area to give lectures and welcome the public aboard for activities or events regarding plastic pollution. An area of 200m and a conference room for 80 people are on board to accommodate these events.
