21、 Friends are important to our lives. We talk to our friends about things which we can’t talk to our families about, and friends offer support when we need it and provide companionship.
It can be very easy to forget to communicate with your friends once you get married, have kids or have a job.Sometimes it’s hard enough to find time for your family and yourself, let alone your friends.
A friend is someone who was once a stranger, and after you made a special connection, you became friends with each other. How amazing it is!It doesn’t happen every day or with everyone you come across. So the fact that you were able to build a friendship with someone who was once a stranger to you is a great and wonderful thing. This is why it’s important to find time for your friends.
Finding time for friends can be as simple as calling them on the phone for a chat every now and then. This lets them know that they are in your thoughts and that they are important to you.Little gestures such as sending your friends some greeting cards, remembering their birthdays, and lending them a helping hand are also ways you can find time for your friends.
Whether you go to the movies, meet for dinner,go dancing,or have a party, spending time together is a great way to relax and reconnect you with each other.
Keep in mind that friends are a special and important part of our lives. So spend some time a day to include them in the balance of your life!

22、Baby bats learn language from peers (同伴) in their social group, and will adopt the group’s dialect, or accent, instead of their mother’s, researchers said on Tuesday. The findings shed new light on crowd-learning of language, a skill thought to belong mainly to humans and just a few other mammals. It also shows that bats are different from songbirds, which tend to learn songs by copying one of their parents. “The ability to copy vocalizations (发音) from others is extremely important for speech learning in humans, but it’s believed to be rare among animals”, said lead author Yossi Yovel of Tel Aviv University.
For the study, researchers captured 14 pregnant Egyptian fruit bats. They separated them into three different bat social groups, where they raised the young bats with their mothers. Each bat group was exposed to a different recording of bat vocalizations. “The baby bats all adopted the manner of vocalizing of the group they heard, not their mothers. The difference between the vocalizations of the mother bat and those of the group is comparable to the difference in a London accent and, say, a Scottish accent,” Yovel said.
“The babies heard their mothers’ London dialect, but also heard the Scottish dialect produced by many dozens of Scottish bats. The babies eventually adopted a dialect that was more similar to the local Scottish dialect than to the London accent of their mothers.” Researchers hope to conduct future studies to examine how bats’ dialects change when they leave their social groups, and if it affects how they integrate with others.
【1】What are the latest findings about bats?
A.Bats are born to adopt their mother’s dialect.
B.Bats can understand peers with different dialects.
C.Bats’ accents are influenced by their peer’s accents.
D.Bats pick up language quickly in company with their peers.

A.To show the differences in dialects among social groups.
B.To explain why bat produce different sounds.
C.To indicate the birthplace of baby bats.
D.To compare how the two accents influenced understanding.
【4】What will the future study most probably focus on?
A.How bats adopt a new dialect after entering a new social group.
B.What changes might occur to bats’ accent after entering a new social group.
C.Whether bats leave their social group if they change their accents.
D.Why some bats fail to be accepted in a new group after they are born.
23、BLOOD DRIVE & MARROW(骨髓) REGISTRATION
“These patients deserve a chance at a normal, happy future and they rely on the kindness of strangers to make that happen.”
—Daisy, Isabelle's Mother
Isabelle is the daughter of Daisy and Saman Mirzaei. In January 2008 Isabelle was diagnosed with a genetic blood disorder, beta thalassemia. Isabelle's body is unable to produce healthy red blood cells. As a result, Isabelle has been receiving blood transfusions(输血) every 4~6 weeks since she was 11 months old. A lifetime of regular transfusions can lead to serious medical problems. Her only chance at a normal, healthy life is to have a marrow transplant. Isabelle is an only child, so doctors have started a search for an unrelated marrow donor through the Be The Match Registry. The Mirzaei family asks that you consider helping patients like Isabelle by registering to be a marrow donor and give the gift of life, the gift of blood.

24、“Based on long-term earthquake records dating back to nearly 1900, the expected annual occurrence of significant comprises roughly 16 events. The 2023 Hatay earthquakes were among the most severe in recent history.” a researcher Ozer said in 2023.
The Hatay region of Turkey is located at the boundary between the Anatolian and Arabian plates. This region experienced a severe earthquake on February 6th, 2023, impacting various aspects of its buildings and cultural heritage. Over 50,000 people died, and the cost was more 104 billion dollars.
Following the significant destruction, a study conducted by Nizar Polat published in Springer Nature in 2023 examines the deformation (变形) of the Earth’s surface in several cities in the Hatay region. The study not only employs Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) (无人机) to get high-resolution 3D modeling (高分辨率的三维建模), but also uses aerial imagery (航空图像) to analyze surface deformations and cracks in the bedrock. Results show 7 cracks ranging from 24.11 to 497.69 m in length.
Besides, analysis within the subsidence (沉降区) area is also used to reveal the extent of physical deformations. Two subsidence areas are identified, measuring 23,060.8m2 and 13,954.2m2 respectively, with height changes of up to 20m. The accuracy of the photos are proved with a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) (均方根误差) of 4.6cm, indicating high accuracy.
This study reveals the value of drone-based high-resolution 3D modeling in revealing the earthquake-caused deformation and landscape changes. These findings have greatly improved the understanding of earthquake destructions in the Hatay area and provided more insights to future research and reduce natural disasters.
【1】Why does the author mention the Ozer’s words?
A.To introduce the background of the study.
B.To develop people’s awareness of disasters.

D.To analyze how strong the earthquake is.
【2】Which method is not used in this study?
A.Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
B. Root Mean Square Error
C.Aerial Imagery
D.Analysis within the subsidence
【3】What’s the author’s attitude about this study?
A.Indifferent.
B.Positive.
C.Pessimistic.
D.Concerned.
【4】What is the text probably about?
A.An introduction to UAVs.
B.An essay on the natural disaster.
C.A guidebook to Hatay region.

26、SummaryWriting
Sociologists have long recognized that organization of less than 200 individuals can operate through the free flow of information among the members.Once their size goes beyond this figure, the organizations are getting less flexible. So it seems necessary to prevent total disorder resulting from failures of communication.
One solution to this problem would, of course, be to structure large organizations into smaller units of a size that can act as a group. By allowing these groups to build reliance on each other, larger organizations can be built up. However, merely having groups of, say, 150 will never of itself be a complete solution to the problems of the organization.Something else is needed: the people involved must be able to build direct personal relationships. To allow free flow of information, they have to be able to communicate with each other in a casual way. Maintaining too formal a structure of relationships inevitably prevents the way a system works.
The importance of this was drawn to my attention two years ago by the case of a TV station. Whether by chance or by design, it so happened that there were almost exactly 150 people in the station. The whole process worked very smoothly as an organization for many years until they were moved into purpose-built accommodation. Then, for no apparent reason, the work seemed to be more difficult to do, not to say less satisfying.
It was some time before they work out what the problem was. It turn out that, when the architects were designing the new building, they decided that the coffee room where everyone ate their sandwiches at lunchtimes was an unnecessary luxury and so did away with it. And with that, they accidentally destroyed the close social networks that strengthened the whole organization. What had apparently been happening was that, as people gathered informally over their sandwiches in the coffee room, useful information was casually being exchanged.
