The World Wildlife Fund,or WWF,says about 20,000 rhinos live in South Africa. That is more than 80 percent of the rhinos in the world.Edna Molewa,South Africas environmental issues minister, says,During 2014,we are sad to say this,1,215 rhinos were killed. This is a rise in the number of poached rhinos from 1004 in 2013 and indeed very worrying.

The animals are hunted for their horns(犀牛角).Many people in Asia believe the horn has   curing power, which drives poachers,at all costs, mad for more horns. But there is no scientific   evidence for this belief. The horn is made of keratin. That is the same thing as human hair,   fingernails and toenails.

Ms.Mo1ewa said 386 suspected poachers were arrested last year,an increase from the year before. But rhino protection workers say poachers often go unpunished after arrest.South Africas legal system is ineffective.Ms.Molewa said more needs to be done and South Africa is taking strong measures to protect rhinos. The efforts include moving some of the animals to secret places in neighboring countries. Now approximately 100 rhinos have been moved to neighboring states in the SADC region during 2014 and 200 more rhinos will be moved this yearMolewa said.

Jo Shaw, the rhino program manager at the WWF,said, were talking about a loss of a hundred rhinos a month.Or more than three a day.We really need to see effective action not just at a national level but internationally. She says officials should find the criminal groups   responsible for the poaching and punish them.Government officials are to meet in Botswana in   March at the Inter-governmental Conference on Illegal Wildlife Trade.

  • 23、“Twelve years ago, I was a professional dancer and black belt in taekwondo when a disease went undiagnosed andwiped outmy muscular system. I finally ended up on life support in intensive care with organ failure. “Kaufman recalled,” I went from living this big life to not knowing how I was going to survive. Fortunately, on my birthday in 2009, I received a new heart and was given a second chance at life!”

After volunteering in Los Angeles hospitals, Kaufman started the non-profit, Ava’s Heart. She and her organization offered transplant patients services that were often not covered by insurance, including food, gas, co-pays on medicines, and housing.

“What I found out was that if you didn’t have post-transplant-housing, you couldn’t get listed and admitted into the hospital, “Kaufman said. She learned that for the nearly 110,000 people in the US waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant, it was not just a matter of adding your name to the list. Patients must be financially secure and be able to afford transportation. What’s more, they must find accommodations near their transplant hospital: Kaufman runs two housing locations, which allows the patients to remain close to their transplant hospital during the period of their aftercare, typically about three months at no cost.

Her organization also helps donor families, which she thinks makes the whole cirele complete. “One organ donor can save eight lives and then there’s tissue and skin and eyes and blood vessels and so many other things,” Kaufman said. “The donor is the whole story. Without the donor, there are no transplant centers, no transplant surgeons, no me. In my eyes, the donors are the heroes. ”

To date, Ava’s Heart has helped nearly 90 families with burial costs for their loved ones whose organs have saved countless lives. Kaufman also works closely with those who receive donations to build relationships with donor families and spread awareness about the importance of organ donation.

【1】What is the purpose of Kaufman’s mentioning her memory in the beginning?

A.To hint her motivation for paying it forward.

    B.To illustrate life is unpredictable.

C.To recall her sufferings from a disease.

D.To show her enthusiasm for dance and taekwondo.

【2】For a transplant patient, admission into the hospital requires the following EXCEPT ________.

    A.convenient housing

    B.health insurance

    C.financial safety

    D.transportation expenses

【3】What is the meaning of the underlined words “wiped out” in the first paragraph?

    A.destroyed

    B.improved

    C.weakened

    D.enhanced

【4】What message does the text mainly convey?

    A.One good turn deserves another.

B.Health counts more for every individual.

C.The blessed bear the heart of giving.

D.Donors are the whole story for transplant.

  • 24、Being able to find high quality health care at an affordable price is a problem to be solved in many countries. In the United States, Walmart, a large chain store, is trying to help. It is offering something new to its employees: cutting the cost of a doctor’s appointment to only $4 instead of the usual $40 for the same service.

The catch is that the patient and doctor must meet over the internet. This online service is called “telemedicine.”

Walmart is the latest major business in the United States to push its workers toward a high-tech way to be examined and treated by doctors. Thanks to telemedicine, people can talk with medical experts from the privacy of their own homes, often using a secure video connection.

Supporters say online visits make it easier for patients to see an expert or quickly find help for problems considered non-emergencies.

Some healthcare needs are well-suited for telemedicine. It can help people seeking treatment for insect bites or skin conditions. Patients who have had medical treatments and cannot move around easily can use telemedicine for their follow-up visits. Also, people seeking help for mental health issues can benefit from the privacy that telemedicine gives.

But still, many people do not use telemedicine, they continue to go to the doctor’s office when they are sick. 80 percent of middle-size and large U.S. companies offered telemedicine services to their workers in 2018. However, only 8 percent of its employees used telemedicine at least once in 2017.

Compared with seeing a real doctor in person, some people may think the quality of telemedicine is not as good. Parents, for example, may feel they are not giving their child the best care if they use a virtual doctor appointment. Older adults may look forward to their in-person doctor appointments. For them, going to the doctor’s office is a big event, something they look forward to.

Another reason some adults may not use telemedicine services is trust. Tom Hill, aged 66, says he has no plans to ever use telemedicine. He does not buy anything online, let alone do something as personal as seeing a doctor. He says, for him, it is important to look his doctor in the eye and shake hands.

However, for some people, especially young people and busy students, telemedicine might be a good choice. It can cut down on the time away from work. It can also cut down on the cost of doctor visits.

【1】What is Walmart trying to help with?

A.Finding something new for its employees.

    B.Promoting the online service “telemedicine”.

C.Cutting the online cost of a doctor’s appointment.

D.Reducing the cost of seeing a doctor at a much lower price.

B.It has become increasingly popular in America.

C.It is the online service that is provided by most large US companies.

D.It makes it easier to see a doctor for emergency problems.

【3】Why do most people prefer to go to the doctor’s office when they are ill?

A.Because their company doesn’t provide telemedicine.

B.Because they don’t trust the doctors online.

C.Because they look forward to a virtual doctor appointment.

D.Because they have made friends with the doctors.

【4】Who is most likely to apply “telemedicine”?

A.Jenny, a shy woman who suffers from mental illness.

B.Smith, a grandpa who has been bitten by a running dog.

C.Wilson, a worker who got seriously injured in a car accident.

D.Kate, a mother whose kid is suffering from a skin disease.

【5】What is the author’s attitude towards “telemedicine”?

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Having held the interschool (校际) story tell g championship for the past two years, I was the shining star of my school. When it came to choosing the right candidate (候选人) to participate in such competitions, I was always the first choice. Naturally, I was once again selected to represent my school in the approaching contest this year.

Upon hearing the fact that I was chosen again, my classmates and friends acknowledged that I would undoubtedly be the champion again. Consequently, I became conceited (自负的). I was so proud that I ignored the importance of practicing for the contest.

A week before the contest, my teacher Ms. Sara asked, “Selena, would you like to stand in front of the class to rehearse (排练) for the contest?” She had tutored me in the past two competitions and knew how important practice was. “Just imagine you are on the stage

    in the audience,” she added.

“I’m sorry, Ms. Sara,” I replied. “I have a bit of a sore throat.”

This was usually the lie I would tell whenever my teacher requested me to practice in front of the class. I always found excuses to avoid doing it because I believed that I was the best and therefore the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I event old Ms. Sara not to worry too much as I was well prepared for the contest. In fact, I did everything but practice my script (讲稿) .I only managed to glance briefly through the story the day before the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools, I was too vain to practice and expected everything to be fine.

The contest was being held in the local community hall. On the day of the contest, the hall was crowded with people. My schoolteachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates. I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. On seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms (手掌) sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous.
