21、When Ada Lovelace walked into a party in 1833, she probably had no idea that a chance meeting there would influence her life in such a drastic way.
Lovelace was 17 at the time. She was intelligent, well educated, and fascinated with mathematics and foreign languages. Interestingly, Lovelace was the daughter of the Romantic poet Lord Byron, but she never really knew him. In an effort to make Lovelace less like her father, her mother encouraged her daughter to study science and math, not literature—and especially not poetry. With the help of her tutor, Lovelace’s intellect in mathematical theory flourished.
So when introduced by a mutual friend at the party to Charles Babbage (a leading mathematician of the day), Lovelace was able to talk with him on equal terms. Charles was struck by Lovelace’s knowledge and interest.
At the time of the party, Ada Lovelace was especially interested in one of Charles’s inventions: the difference machine, which was created to perform basic mathematical calculations. Up until this point, all math problems had always been solved by hand. The difference machine meant that some calculations could be automated.
Later, in 1843, Charles needed help. An engineer from Italy had written an article about Charles’s latest invention, the Analytical Engine. Who could both understand a complex article containing advanced mathematics and translate it from Italian into English? Ada Lovelace! This opportunity enabled her to show her academic talent for mathematics. Lovelace didn’t just translate the article — she came up with many of her own ideas about how the machine could be adapted to solve even more complex equations. Her notes were the first time that steps to solve certain equations had ever been written down. In other words, Ada Lovelace wrote the very first computer program! Her notes helped clarify for others how to approach difficult mathematical concepts.
Today we depend on computers to accurately make thousands of calculations per second. Lovelace’s pioneering work in mathematics and computer programming transformed the world. Without her contributions or her chance encounter with Charles Babbage, we might still be doing extremely complex mathematical calculations with a pencil and paper!

22、 Children now worry more about their parents spending too much time on their mobiles or computers than parents worry about their children. Those who order their children to switch off televisions, computers or mobile phones because they fear they are becoming addicted might need to take a long hard look at their own screen habits, new research shows.
Almost 70% of children think their parents spent too much time on their mobile phone, iPad or other similar devices, a research found. More than a third of children worry that their parents struggle to switch off from technology and a quarter of children surveyed openly accuse them of double standards when it comes to excessive (过多的) use of mobile devices, televisions and computers. One in five British children say their parents do not listen to them properly when they are together because they are so busy checking their emails or picking up work messages.
The survey was carried out by Opinion Matters, a research agency for the New Forest National Park Authority. The authority has recently begun providing facilities for visitors to hand in mobile phones, tablets and other devices for fear that technology is invading family life and making it impossible for people to appreciate nature properly because they never switch off.
Dr Richard Graham, a consultant adolescent psychiatrist and expert in technology addiction at Capio Nightingale Hospital in London, said there is growing evidence that children are finding their parents’ preoccupation with communication technology increasingly worrisome.
Four in ten of the children surveyed admitted that they sometimes communicate with their parents by text, email or social media even they are in the next room. The survey found that six in ten parents worry their children are spending too much time glued to small screens at home but almost seven in ten children have the same fear for their parents.
Dr Aric Sigman told the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health conference that parents who cannot switch off risk driving them to a lifelong dependency on screens with striking similarities to alcoholism. If so, I think, they will regret wasting the time supposed to be spend on their children before they grow up disappointed.
【1】How many children questioned worry their parents spend too much time on screens?

A.To introduce the mobiles and computers to adults.
B.To advise parents to spend more time on their children.
C.To describe the difficulties today’s parents have met with.
D.To compare today’s parent-child relationship with that in the past.
23、 The Docklands Light Railway(DLR) took just three years to build at a cost of £77 million. It is London’s first Light Rail System, but its route follows that of a number of older lines, which carried the nineteenth century railways through the crowded districts of the East End.
The section of the line from the Tower Gateway Station to Poplar follows the line of one of London’s earliest railways, the London & Blackwell(1840), a cable-drawn railway(later converted to steam) which carried passengers to steam ships at Blackwell Pier, and provided transport for the messengers and clerks who went backwards and forwards between the docks and the city every day.
From Poplar to Island Gardens, a new line crosses high above the dock waters, and then joins the old track of the Millwall Extension Railway, built to service the Millwall Docks(1868) and to provide transport for workers in the local factories. This line was horse-drawn for part of its route, until the 1880s.
The Poplar to Stratford section of the DLR route was first developed by the North London Railway, built in the 1850s to link the West and East India Docks with the manufacturing districts of the Midlands and North of England. There were major railway works and sidings(岔线) at Bow until recently.
The trains are automatically controlled from a central computer, which deals with all signaling and other safety factors, as well as adjusting speeds to keep within the timetable; on board each vehicle, Train Captains, who are also fully qualified drivers, are equipped with two-way radios to maintain contact with central control. There are passenger lifts, and self-service ticket machines, at every station.

A.was begun in the nineteen century
B.follows some of the original line
C.will be finished in three years’ time
D.took three years longer than expected to complete
【2】It appears that the Poplar to Stratford section of the DLR route was originally developed to ____.
A.make the transport of goods easier B.encourage trade abroad
C.promote the transport in England D.create employment at home
【3】The trains on the DLR are controlled by ______.
A.drivers on the trains themselves B.two-way radios operated by the drivers
C.a computer on board the train D.a computer based elsewhere
24、 Sit still. It's the rule of every classroom. But that is changing as evidence builds that taking brief activity breaks during the day helps children learn and be more attentive in class, and a growing number of programs designed to promote movement are being adopted in schools. "We need to recognize that children are movement-based," said Brian Gatens, the superintendent of schools in Emerson, N.J." In schools, we sometimes are pushing against human nature in asking them to sit still and be quiet all the time.We fall into this trap that if kids are at their desks with their heads down and are silent and writing, we think they are learning," Mr. Gatens added. "But what we have found is that the active time used to energize your brain makes all those still moments better, or more productive."
A 2013 report from the Institute of Medicine concluded that children who are more active show greater attention, have faster cognitive processing speed and perform better on standardized academic tests than children who are less active. And a study released in January by Lund University in Sweden shows that students, especially boys, who had daily physical education, did better in school.
"Daily physical activity is an opportunity for the average school to become a high-performing school," said Jesper Fritz, a doctoral student at Lund University and physician at the Skane University Hospital in Malmo who was the study's lead author.
"Activity helps the brain in so many ways," said James F.Sallis, a professor of family medicine and public health at the University of California, San Diego, who has done research on the association between activity breaks and classroom behavior."Activity stimulates more blood vessels in the brain to support more brain cells. And there is evidence that active kids do better on standardized tests and pay attention more in school." "Plus," he added," it makes kids want to come to school more-it's fun to do these activities."
But not all districts are embracing the trend of movement breaks. "The bottom line is that with only six and a half hours during the day, our priority is academics," said Tom Hernandez, the director of community relations for the Plainfield School District in Illinois, about 40 miles southwest of Chicago. He said that under state law, the schools provide daily physical education classes and that teachers in the district find ways to give students time during the day to refresh and recharge.
"Kids aren't meant to sit still all day and take in information," said Steve Boyle, one of the co-founders of the National Association of Physical Literacy, which aims to bring movement into schools." Adults aren't either."
【1】Brain Gatens is likely to agree that
A.all of the students should sit still
B.sitting still often means studying well

A.activity helps the brain in only one way
B.activities can make children physically and mentally healthy
C.activities have nothing to do with children's academic performances
D.Daily activity is a chance for the average school to become a high one
【3】According to James F. Sallis, the reasons why activities make students clever is that _____
A.they stimulate more blood vessels in the body
B.they activate all the brain cells but are tough on bodies
C.they give children fun and motivate all the brains to work
D.they give students time during the day to refresh and recharge
【4】Which column are you likely to read the passage in the newspaper?

25、 Every minute, every single day, the equivalent of a truckload of plastic enters our oceans. In the name of profit and convenience, corporations are literally choking (塞满) our planet with a substance that does not just “____” when we toss it into a bin. Since the 1950s, some 8.3bn tons of plastic have been produced worldwide, and to date, only 9% of that has been recycled. Our oceans bear the brunt (受主要冲击) of plastics epidemic—up to 12.7m tons of plastic end up in them every year.
Just over a decade ago, I launched the Story of Stuff to help shine a light on the ways we ____, use and dispose of the stuff in our lives. The Story of Stuff is inextricably (不可逃避的) linked to the story of plastics—the packaging that goes along with those endless ____. We buy a soda, sip it for a few minutes, and toss its ____ packaging “away”. We eat potato chips, finish them, and throw their packaging “away”.
The cycle is endless, and it happens countless times every single day. But here’s the ____—there is no “away”. As far as we try to toss a piece of plastic—whether it’s into a recycling bin or not—it does not disappear. Chances are, it ____ polluting our communities, oceans or waterways in some form.
For years, we’ve been ____ that the problem of plastic packaging can be solved through better individual action. We’re told that if we ____ recycle, we’re doing our part. We’re told that if we drink from a reusable bottle, we’re making enough of a ____. But the truth is that we cannot recycle our way out of this mess.
Recycling alone will never stop the flow of plastics into our oceans; we have to get to the ____ of the problem and slow down the production of all this plastic waste. Think about it: if your home was flooding because you had left the tap on, your first step wouldn’t be to start ____. You’d first cut the flooding off at its source—the tap. In many ways, our plastics problem is no different.
____, we need corporations—those like Coca-Cola, Unilever, Starbucks and Nestlé that continue to mass-produce throwaway plastic bottles, cups, and straws—to step up and show real ____ for the mess they’ve created. Drink companies produce over 500bn single-use plastic bottles annually; there is no way that we can recycle our way out of a problem of that scale.
Bag, cup and straw bans like those in Morocco, Iceland, Vancouver and some US cities are a great start, but also not enough. And while clean-up efforts are ____ in addressing litter problems, they can’t begin to touch the problems created by microplastics.
Not long ago, we existed in a world without throwaway plastic, and we can thrive that way again. The world’s largest corporations—with all their profits and innovation labs—are well ____ to help move us beyond single-use plastics. All over the world people are already innovating toward solutions that focus on reusing and reducing plastics. It’s time to accelerate this process and move beyond half measures and baby steps.
