  • 21、Join the discussion…

    Lakelander       ·2 hours ago

Today, a man talked very loud on his phone on a train between Malvern and Reading, making many passengers upset. I wonder how he would react if I were to read my newspaper out loud on the train. I have never had the courage to do it, though.

    Pak50       ·57 minutes ago

Why not give it a try? Perhaps you should take lessons on a musical instrument. The late musician Dennis Brain is said to have asked a fellow train passenger to turn off his radio. When his request was refused, he took out his French horn (号) and started to practice.

    Angie O’Edema       ·42 minutes ago

I don’t see how musical instruments can help improve manners in public. Don’t do to others what you wouldn’t like to be done to yourself. Once, a passenger next to me talked out loud on his mobile phone. I left my seat quietly, giving him some privacy to finish his conversation. He realized this and apologized to me. When his phone rang again later, he left his seat to answer it. You see, a bit of respect and cooperation can do the job better.

    Taodas       ·29 minutes ago

I did read my newspaper out loud on a train, and it turned out well. The guy took it in good part, and we chatted happily all the way to Edinburgh.

    Sophie76   ·13 minutes ago

I have not tried reading my newspaper out loud on a train, but, several years ago, I read some chapters from Harry Potter to my bored and noisy children. Several passengers seemed to appreciate what I did.

【1】The passenger made an apology to Angie O’Edema because ___________.

A.he offered his seat to someone else

B.he spoke very loudly on his phone

C.he refused to talk with Angie

【2】Who once read a newspaper out loud on a train?

    A.Pak50.

    B.Angie O’Edema.

【3】What is the discussion mainly about?

A.How to react to bad behavior.

B.How to kill time on a train.

    C.How to chat with strangers.

D.How to make a phone call.

【4】Where is the passage most probably taken from?

    A.A webpage.

    B.A newspaper.

    C.A novel.

    D.A report.

  • 22、   I’m not so sure I like my friends any more. I used to like them — to be honest. We’d have lunch, talk on the phone or exchange emails, and they all seemed normal enough. But then came Facebook, and I was introduced to a sad fact: many of my friends have dark sides that they had kept from me.

Today my friends show off the more unpleasant aspects of their personalities via Facebook. No longer hidden, they’re thrown in my face like TV commercials — unavoidable and endless advertisements for the worst of their personalities.

Take Fred. If you were to have lunch with him, you’d find him warm, and self-effacing (谦逊的). Read his Facebook and you’ll realize he’s an unbearable, foodobsessed boring man. He’d pause to have a cup of coffee on his way to save a drowning man — and then write about it.

Take Andy. You won’t find a smarter CEO anywhere, but now he’s a CEO without a company to run. So he plays Mafia Wars on Facebook. He’s doing well — level 731.Thanks to Facebook, I know he’s playing about 18 hours a day. Andy, you’ve run four companies — and this is how you spend your downtime? What happened to golf? What happened to getting another job?

Take Liz. She is positive that the flu vaccine will kill us all and that we should avoid it. And then comes Chris who likes to post at least 20 times a day on every website he can find, so I get to read his thoughts twice, once on Facebook and once on Twitter.

In real life, I don’t see these sides of people. Face to face, my friends show me their best. They’re nice, smart people. But face to Facebook, my friends are like a blind date which goes horribly wrong.

I’m left with a dilemma. Who is my real friend? Is it the Liz I have lunch with or the antivaccine mad woman on Facebook? Is it the Fred I can grab a sandwich with or the Fred who weeps if he’s at a party and the wine isn’t up to his standards?

1What’s Andy probably busy in doing now?

    A.He’s running his company.

    B.He’s playing golf all day.

    C.He’s looking for another job.

    D.He’s playing computer games.

2The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to “______”.

    A.a dilemma B.my real friend

    C.Facebook D.Twitter

3The text is developed mainly by ______.

    A.giving examples

    B.following the time order

    C.listing figures

    D.raising questions

  • 24、Ryan Hickman is only a little boy, but he's already been saving for his college fund with profits he's making from his recycling business.

When Ryan was a three-year-old boy, he went with his dad to the local recycling center and made money from a few bags of cans and bottles. When he learned money can be made from that, Ryan decided recycling was his future.

“We went to the center with a couple of bags, and he really loved the actual act of putting all the cans and bottles into the machine and getting the money from it, and that kind of act got him hooked,” described Damion Hickman, Ryan's father.

Ryan told his parents that he wanted to give empty plastic bags to all the neighbors and hoped they would save their recyclables for him. Not only did the neighbors save their cans and bottles for Ryan but so did their co-workers, families, and friends. Soon after, Ryan started his own business, Ryan's Recycling, and has since recycled over 200,000 cans and bottles. Every week, he and his family sort through bags of recyclables and they take them to the local recycling center where they are sorted and weighed.

So far, Ryan has saved more than $ 10,000 for college from his profits and he also sells T-shirts on his website and donates the profits to the Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach. “For the sea lions to get food and medicine,” he said.

Ryan has an important message for everyone, “If you already recycle, just keep on recycling. If you don't recycle, start recycling.” Always a great businessman, Ryan added, “If you want to buy one of these T-shirts, it's about $ 13 on ryansrecycling. com.”

【1】When did Ryan think of recycling as his future?

C.When he got some rewards for selling T-shirts on his website.
