二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   China is developing a system that recognizes individuals by their body shape and walking movements.Systems that recognize human faces are already being used to identify people in crowds or as a secure way to unlock personal devices.

The new system, known as “gait recognition”,is already on trial by police on the streets of Beijing and Shanghai. The Chinese technology company Watrix developed the system. The company announced last month that it had raised $14.5 million to speed up the development and sale of the technology.

The system works in a similar way to face recognition.Cameras capture video of people in public places. Then, machines powered by artificial intelligence (AI) examine and study the video.

Facial recognition systems identify the shapes and expressions on a person’s face to identify them.Gait recognition uses a person’s body shape and their way of walking to identify them. The system records a person’s shape and movements and then creates a model of the way they walk.

Huang Yongzhen is a former researcher who co-founded Watrix in 2016.He told the Associated Press his system can identify people from up to 50 metres away.It is designed to work even when a person’s face is covered or hidden.Huang says his gait recognition system is correct 94 percent of the time. This is below the success rate of many face recognition systems. But he says the system can still be helpful to police and for other commercial purposes. He also believes the system can be effective when used together with face recognition.

Gait recognition is not new.The technology has been researched by scientists in Japan and Britain and by US defense officials for about 10 years. But attempts to sell the technology have been slow. One of the reasons the technology has not developed further is that the systems are more complex than facial recognition.

【1】What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A.A system that can recognize human faces is around the corner.

B.It is tough to accurately follow a person in crowds.

C.A system that can identify a person by walking is being developed.

D.A new system that can check a body shape is under way.

【2】What do you know about Watrix mentioned in the passage?

A.It has invented a lot of systems adopted by the police.

B.It has earned $14.5 million by inventing the system.

C.It has become famous for the face recognition system.

D.It has got well prepared for the new system.

【3】Why is facial recognition similar to gait recognition?

A.Cameras catch video of people’s expressions.

B.A person’s body shape can be recognized very easily.

C.Cameras record video of a person in public places.

D.A person’s action will be sent to the police.

【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.Japan and Britain kept a secret about the system.

B.The systems of gait recognition are hard to develop.

C.Gait recognition will suffer a poor market very soon.

D.Almost no one understands how gait recognition runs.

  • 22、For years, Zach Ault, a father of three, enjoyed being physically active. He was even training for a half-marathon. But in 2017, he took time off to recover from an infection. After recovering, he tried to continue his runs but could not complete them. He was not able to spend time with his children. He had to cut back his job. Even sleeping as much as 16 hours a day made no difference in his condition.

“His body had literally hijacked him and it wasn't going to allow him to push through, ” said Anne Ault, his wife. After months of testing, doctors announced their result-chronic fatigue syndrome, a disease that makes an individual feel extremely tired.

This fatigue lasts more than six months and becomes worse after any kind of physical exertion (费力活动). Patients may have difficulty standing upright. They also may have trouble thinking, often described as a “brain fog”. There are no approved treatments, or even tests to help with diagnosis. There is no way to predict who will recover and who will have a severe case that lasts for years.

Now the doctors at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are conducting a unique study to learn more about the condition. Zach Ault is one of the subjects in the study. When Ault rides an exercise bicycle, scientists measure how his leg muscles use oxygen. Afterward, doctors fit a special cap on Ault's head to measure electrical activity in his brain. They then send him to spend the night in an air-tight room where air has been removed with pipe for additional study. Scientists measure oxygen and carbon dioxide levels to tell how much energy Ault is using, minute by minute. “We're figuring out how his body adjusts to an exercise load, or a stress load.”

“It's hard not knowing if or when I'm going to recover, ” he said. But Ault says the study did help him learn about the disease. And it gave him ideas about how to save up his energy.

【1】What was Zach Ault's life like before 2017?

    A.He was fond of exercising.

    B.He won several half-marathons.

C.He spent much time lying in bed.

D.He was busy looking after his children.

【2】How did the infection affect Zach Ault?

    A.He lost his job.

    B.He was unable to sleep.

C.He became too weak to do sports.

    D.He was tired of running a half-marathon.

【3】What can we learn about chronic fatigue syndrome?

A.It usually lasts no more than months.

B.It is likely to cause thinking disorders.

C.Patients with it need to stay in bed all day long.

D.Patients with it should avoid any kind of exercise.

【4】What does Zach Ault think of the study?

A.It helped him cure his illness.

B.It helped him recover and stay fit.

C.It taught him how to enjoy cycling.

D.It brought him new ideas about fighting diseases.

  • 23、   When humans make friends, we often choose companions who share similar characteristics to us or enjoy participating in the same activities that we enjoy. Interestingly, it turns out that dolphins (海豚) may not be so different, according to a study which found that the animals form strong social ties with those who have similar interests. In some ways, this may not be surprising, if we know dolphins live in groups characterized by complex social activities. However, the latest findings are yet another powerful example of the intelligence that these creatures possess.

For the study, an international team of scientists studied a unique group of bottlenose dolphins, who live in the World Heritage area of Shark Bay, Western Australia. They are particularly interesting because the females are known to use sea sponges (海绵动物) as foraging (觅食) tools, a behavior that hasn’t been perceived anywhere else. The behavior known as “sponging,” helps the dolphins to find food in deeper waters and is socially-learned, being passed down from mother to baby.

Previous studies have shown that females in this group who use sea sponges to find food often like to hang out with other females who do the same. However, studies of this behavior in males are lacking, leaving a gap (空白) in our knowledge. To try and address this gap, the researchers collected data on 124 male dolphins in Shark Bay over a 9-year period between 2007 and 2015. Among these dolphins, some had the sponging behavior, while others did not. After analyzing their data, the team came to the conclusion that those males who used sponges for foraging associated significantly more often with other “spongers,” no matter how related they were to their companions. Interestingly, male spongers spent significantly more time foraging and less time resting than non-spongers.

According to the lead author of the study, Manuela Bizzozzero, the findings cast new light on the social ties between male dolphins at Shark Bay.

1What can we learn form the first paragraph?

    A.Dolphins are humans’ best friends.

    B.Dolphins make friends like humans.

    C.Dolphins can understand humans’ emotions.

D.Dolphins confuse humans with their lifestyles.

2What does the underlined word “perceived” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Influenced. B.Prevented.

    C.Observed. D.Accepted.

3Why does the author mention previous studies in Paragraph 3?

A.To explain the intention of the latest studies.

B.To present their achievements in dolphin research.

C.To stress that dolphins have the socially-learned behavior.

D.To show how female dolphins use sea sponges to find food.

4What’s the result of the studies on male bottlenose dolphins?

A.Few of them make use of sponges to find food.

B.A large quantity of them mainly feed on sponges.

C.Male spongers rest more often than non-spongers.

D.Male spongers enjoy staying with other spongers.

  • 24、   Christa Barfield of Germantown starts each day by drinking a cup of hot tea. When she lifts the cup to her lips, she smells the tea gently and looks forward to the day ahead. "Drinking a cup of tea is a form of self-reflection," Barfield said." When I'm doing my praying or meditation(冥想), drinking tea allows me to sit in the moment and be present."

Barfield, 32, fell in love with tea in 2018 after taking a trip to the Caribbean Island of Martinique where every morning with her breakfast she was served a hot cup from the couple she visited. There, the host would take live herbs from his garden, put them in a cup, and pour hot water over them. "It was very different from what we do in America," Barfield said. "The tea had a fresher taste."

When she returned to Germantown, she was inspired to start a tea company of her own. In August, she started Viva Leaf Tea, a company that sells blended(调配的)teas from herbs and plants that Barfield grows from seed. The name of the company, Viva Leaf Tea, is a nod to the fresh herbal teas she drank in Martinique.

"I started a tea company for wellness reasons." Barfield explained, "It helped me to keep my 10 years of healthcare experiences and reuse them in my own way," Before starting Viva Leaf Tea. Barfield worked in healthcare management at several private practices in Philadelphia. In 2018, she earned a bachelor's degree in healthcare administration from Saint Joseph's University.

"We take all of our herbs very seriously," she said. "There are thousands of tea companies all over the world. But you don't really know where the tea leaves come from."
