  • 21、Bangkok has become the world’s top tourist destination, with 15.98 million visitors projected to visit Thailand’s capital city this year, according to the third annual Global Destination Cities Index released by MasterCard on Monday. Based on data MasterCard collected from governments, central banks, related public agencies and airlines to far this year, the projection for the entire year says Bangkok is surpassing London, the previous holder of the top place, by a very narrow margin.

Monday’s report marked the first time an Asian city has been projected to be the top-ranked tourist destination. London came in second, with 15.96 million visitors expected in 2013, and Paris, third, with 13.92 million visitors. MasterCard looked at 132 cities.

Other Asian cities that made it to the Top-20 Global Destination Cities in 2013 include Singapore at number four, with 11.75 million visitors; Kuala Lumpur at number eight, with 9.2 million visitors; Hong Kong at number nine, with 8.72 million visitors; Seoul at number 11, with 8.19 million visitors; Shanghai at number 14, with 6.5 million visitors. Tokyo at number 16, with 5.8 million visitors, and Taipei, with 5.19 million visitors.

The study found that Bangkok is experiencing a large increase in its number of tourists in 2013, up 9.8% from 2009. That compares to New York’s increase at 5.0% and London’s at 3.8%. Paris, meanwhile, saw a small dip in its number of tourists (negative 0.7%).

Caroline Liedo, who was visiting Bangkok from France, said Thailand has many offerings. “We like culture and the people are so nice. We also love shopping here,” Ms. Liedo said. MasterCard Worldwide’s global economic adviser Yuwa Hedrick-Wong cited(引用)overall value for money spent for why Bangkok is attractive. That is true for Thailand overall as well.

  • 22、   Waste sorting is a complex phenomenon that can be an important step toward a global circular economy. Maybe it even will be something we will look back on as one of the first steps toward an ecological society.

But sorting of waste could also mean participating in an activity that gradually weakens sustainable development by allowing unsustainable companies to use recycling as a way to pretend they are sustainable.

When Royal Dutch Shell, British-Dutch oil and gas company, wanted to dump an oil rig in the ocean in 1995 many people in Europe had just started to separate glass bottles and newspapers. The company’s plan was viewed as a sign of arrogance. The incident led to an important meeting, after which many companies started including environmental factors in their risk assessment.

The situation is different today. It is no longer clear if the kind of waste sorting done in Western nations is part of the problem or the solution. There are areas where the sorting of waste is working reasonably well, for example the glass and metal industries. But at a time when we are looking at a transformative system change and global sustainability, there is a need to fundamentally rethink waste sorting.

In the coming decades, the world needs to eliminate (消除) the use of fossil fuels, become more resource efficient lift billions out of poverty and ensure greater equity. In order to ensure this, we need a resource-efficient circular economy, and waste sorting can play a key role. But that should be a very different kind of waste sorting.

China could initiate the next generation of waste sorting systems. Such a waste sorting system would be a driver for innovation and extreme resource efficiency and a true step toward ecological civilization.

1Waste sorting is a complex phenomenon because ________.

A.it is an important step toward a global circular economy

B.it means economy and may be an activity that gradually weakens sustainable development

C.it is a first step toward an ecological society

D.it is slowly moving into the center of conversation

2What did the behavior of Royal Dutch Shell company result in?

    A.The dumping of oil rig.

    B.Separating glass bottles and newspapers.

    C.Including environment when assessing risks.

D.Starting waste sorting in European countries.

3There is a need to fundamentally rethink waste sorting because ________.

A.the sorting of waste is working well in some areas

B.a transformative system change and global sustainability should be considered

C.the western recycling system does not fit for the whole world

D.people are concerned about greater equity

4What is the main purpose of the passage?

    A.To introduce Western recycling systems.

    B.To compare two recycling systems.

C.To predict the change of ecological system.

D.To advocate a more sustainable waste sorting system.

  • 23、Beijing resident Hou Lixin started eating meal replacement products in February when she wanted to lose weight. She bought various meal replacement products online and ate them for more than a month.

“Most of them don’t taste good, but at least they have low calories and are convenient to buy, store and cook,” she said, adding the product she consumed gave a strong sense of fullness.

Hou is by no means alone. Meal replacement products, or substitutes for regular meals that can fill you up with low-calorie intakes, appear as a potential big market in China, driven by Chinese consumer’ demand for products that can help in weight control and offer convenience, experts said.

The most common meal replacement products include powders, liquids, shakes, porridges and energy bars containing fiber, protein, vitamin, minerals and other nutritious content.

The meal replacement market is at the early stage of competition and there is big room for future development, like in the United States and Japan. Euromonitor International, a market research company, said sales revenue of meal replacement products in China hit 57.17 billion yuan in 2017 and is expected to reach 120 billion yuan by 2022. More fast-moving consumer goods giants are partaking in the market action. PepsiCo’s oat brand Quaker released a new shake product in June. A major Chinese snack brand Bestore released 27 meal replacement products in August.

Jia Jianbin, secretary general at Chinese Cereals and Oils Association, told CCTV reporter that despite its possible effectiveness that many people believe, this way of weight loss may bring greater harm as it breaks the balance of nutrition and food. As a result, it can only be a temporary move, not a long-term use.

“Cereal meal replacement powder, for example, is mainly composed of carbohydrates (碳水化合物), which have enough calories, but the vitamins and minerals are not enough. Instead, it is better to soak oatmeal (燕麦片) in milk, which may be more nutritious and more economical,” said Gu Zhongyi, a dietitian of the Beijing Dietetic Association. “Meal replacements can be an alternative for busy workers, but they are no substitute for a balanced diet, and try not to eat more than one meal a day.”

【1】The author quotes the example of Hou Lixin to _________.

A.show an efficient way to lose weight

    B.promote the meal replacement products

C.introduce the topic of meal replacement products

D.arouse readers’ interest in the meal replacement products

【2】Why are meal replacement products popular among many Chinese consumers?

A.Because they are highly recommended by health experts.

B.Because they are helpful to control weight and bring convenience.

C.Because they have a large market share in the food market.

D.Because they provide various forms and flavors for the consumers.

【3】What does the underlined word “partaking” in Paragraph 5 mean?

    A.Participating.

    B.Advertising.

    C.Experimenting.

    D.Cooperating.

【4】What attitude do Jia Jianbin and Gu Zhongyi have towards the meal replacement products?

    A.Cautious.

    B.Favorable.

    C.Disapproving.

    D.Confused.

    Twelve Days of Kindness

Although it was less than two weeks before Christmas, I found it difficult to be in a festive mood. We had moved to Canada, and holidays were difficult for us because we missed our friends and relatives in Minnesota. Our family was also going through a very difficult year, with health problems and a serious work-related problem for my husband.

“Mom, How I wish we could spend Christmas with Grandpa and Grandma in Minnesota. I really miss them and my friends there.” said my fifteen-year-old daughter, Rachel.

“I know, Rachel. So would I,” I said. “But Minnesota is 2,000 kilometers away. Don’t you remember how hard it was to drive in that snowstorm last year? And then the temperature dropped to-30℃ on our way back?”

“I remember,” she said and ducked her head disappointedly.

We thought driving to Minnesota for Christmas was too risky and buying airline tickets for three people was out of the question. We would be spending Christmas alone in Canada, and had no money for a Christmas tree or a Christmas dinner.

We were surprised when the doorbell rang. It was dark and cold outside, and we weren’t expecting anyone. Hesitantly, Rachel stood up and went forward to open the door, and then said, “Mom, there’s a big box on the doorstep and nobody is out here!” My husband also went and looked. But there was nobody insight.

They brought the box in. We were surprised to find that the box contained many packages covered in bright Christmas paper. Each had a typewritten note: Open Dec.14, Open Dec.15...There were a total of twelve—the “Twelve Days of Christmas.” The note read: Our LOVE is given anonymously(匿名地), so enjoy fun with your family, but don’t tell anyone please.
