  • 21、A group of swimmers has described how a group of dolphins protected them from a group of white sharks (食人鲨)off the coast of New Zealand. The lifeguards were on a training swim when they came across a group of great white sharks before the dolphins raced in to help.

The swimmers were surrounded by the dolphins for forty minutes before they were able to make them safety back to the beach. It was an uncomfortable experience as they were circled by a group of white sharks, which came within a couple of meters of them. Lifeguard Rob Howes was in the water with a colleague and his teenage daughter. He said around half a dozen dolphins suddenly appeared and forced them to gather together. The mammals swam in tight circles to create a protective wall between the white sharks and the lifeguards as the great white sharks were under the surface.

The swimmers said the dolphins were extremely upset and repeatedly slapped (拍打) the water with their tails as if to try to prevent the white sharks from attacking them. Its a day they’ll never forget, especially for one who was on her first day as a volunteer. They have no doubt that the dolphins acted on purpose to protect them. Researchers have said that theyre not surprised. A marine biologist insisted that dolphins, which are considered to be one of the most intelligent mammals, like to help the helpless.

  • 22、   Instagram is a social networking app made for sharing photos and videos from a smartphone. However, some people argue that Instagram is harmful to teens.

Essena O’Neill seemed to have a perfect life --- at least online. The Australian teen had 500,000 Instagram followers. Her Internet fame led to a modeling contract. Companies paid her to show their clothing in her photos.

But in November 2015, Essena, then 18, shut down her Instagram account. She cut off more than 2000 photos. “I’ve spent the majority of my teenage life being attracted to social media,” she wrote. “ I’m leaving Instagram.”

Essena left a few photos online, and told the truth behind the photos she created. For example, she didn’t eat all day before taking a picture in a bikini(比基尼泳装). She took that photo 100 times to make sure her stomach looked perfect. “Social media is not real life!” she says now.

Seeing perfect-looking Instagram photos can make teens feel like they don’t meet the standard of beauty. And if your photos don’t get many “likes”, you might take it personally. Even Essena worried all the time about what others thought of her. Trying to appear perfect online made her feel alone. One day, she wrote, “I had never been more miserable.”

Not everyone thinks that Instagrem is harmful, though. Some people say it might even be good for teens. Why? Unlike many ads and magazines, Instagram includes photos of all different kinds of people. That means you’re more likely to see a photo of someone who looks like you.

Plus, studies show that many people who use social media feel more connected to friends. And social media users are more likely to know about big events in the lives of friends and family. So maybe it’s OK to love Instagram as long as you love yourself too.

1According to the text, Instagram brought Essena ______.

A.a healthy lifestyle B.fame and money

C.many true friends D.a perfect teenage life

2Why did Essena shut down her Instagram account at age 18? ______

A.Because she was too busy. B.Because her shape changed.

C.Because she faced great pressure. D.Because her photos were deleted

    3What’s the author’s attitude towards Instagram? ________

    A.Worried B.Curious C.Surprised D.Supportive

4What does the text mainly discuss? _______

A.Should you be on a diet to look perfect?

B.Should you make friends on social media?

C.Should you give others “likes” on Instagram?

D.Should you shut down your Instagram account?

  • 24、   My fellow Americans, earlier this year I announced my candidacy for president of our house, 347 Elm Street. My goal was simple: unseat my wife—Mommy, who I believed had grown careless in how she handled the affairs of our home.

My qualifications to take this house-hold of three in the right direction were evident. I was and remain the only one in the family who can open pickle jars. I was and remain the only one who can remember the Amazon Prime password. I was and remain the only one who doesn't scream when he sees small bugs. I was and remain the Best Dad—see my coffee cup.

It was a close contest where I pressed my opponent on the hottest topics of the day. On the issue of transportation, I questioned my rival's refusal to make left-hand turns. And on health care, I fought the lonely battle against buying a dog, reminding everyone, “I'm allergic!”.

But tonight, the votes have been cast, the people of this great house have spoken, and I respect their decision. And while I take great pride in how close the election was—two votes to one—it is clear that I will not be your next president As contentious as this campaign has been,it is now time to unite our home around the winner. I call for all my supporters, namely myself, to fall in line to ensure a smooth transition from the previous Mommy administration to the next Mommy administration, which will mark her 21st term in office. Although I will not be serving as your president and commander-in-chief, I will continue to fight for the things that my campaign stood for.

Now, as I prepare to end my campaign and take our new dog for a walk, I thank each and every voter, no matter whom you recklessly voted for. And may God bless 347 Elm Street.

【1】What was the author's purpose of participating in the election earlier this year?

A.To take the place of his wife.

B.To run for President of America.

    C.To solve their household problems.

D.To help his wife to be more careful.

【2】How did the author feel after the result of the election was known?

    A.Agreeable and optimistic.

    B.Angry and disappointed.

    C.Delighted and satisfied.

    D.Desperate and helpless.

【3】What can be inferred about the author from the passage?

    A.It was an unfair campaign.

B.His family was united and harmonious.

C.He took an absolute advantage over his wife in the election.

D.Compared to his wife, he could always drive in the right direction.
