21、If you can’t get your hands off your cellphone, you have unknowingly become a slave to this device. Being addicted to a cellphone can be potentially harmful. Here are some reasons why you should use your cellphone less.
【1】 Very often you forget the world outside your cellphone. Just leave the phone at home, take a walk, and get to know what you really want in life. Discover what sparks your interest and pursue it with all your heart.
You should focus more on personal interactions in real life. Can you hug your dad and feel his strength through the phone? Can you kiss your mom goodnight over the phone? 【2】 Cellphones just snatch these precious things away from you.
Your grades will go up. Leave your phone behind when going to school. Once you get home, don’t lie on the bed and text your friends. 【3】 Your grades will improve.
You need to give your mind a break. Constantly chatting on the phone puts too much pressure on your brain, which does great harm to both your physical and mental health. 【4】
You need to keep away from anxiety. Research has shown that people who use cellphones all day long are more anxious and restless. 【5】 When they don’t get what they want, they will become depressed. Therefore, keep the phone away to keep anxiety at bay.

22、There are plenty of beauty schools throughout the country that can help you to start a career in cosmetology(美容业). Nowadays, young people may not be able to afford a four-year college. Students can look forward to attending a beauty school program which will only take a few months to complete and start their career right away to earn money.
There can be many benefits of going to beauty school. The expense is much less than attending a four-year university. Besides, attending beauty school is mostly a hands-on(动手的) experience which appeals to many people. Some students don’t like sitting all day listening to lectures and then having to study at night. What’s more, most beauty school programs keep up with the changing trends and fashion. So you will always be working on different hair types which can be fun and will give you a lot of experience throughout the years of your career.
If you are worried about finding a job after graduation, many beauty schools will offer assistance for immediate job placement and give you peace of mind that you will not be stranded looking for a job. Most colleges and universities are not equipped to do that because of the large number of graduates each year.
Cosmetologists will also make a good salary. The average salary will depend on your location, but you may earn a salary around $3,000--$3,500 a month. This is not including tips which could be $600 or more a month. Not only can young people go to cosmetology school, but people of all ages can start this career. As you can see, there are many benefits of beauty schools that can be the perfect opportunity for anyone to become a great cosmetologist.

23、This Is Why Dogs Spin Around Before They Poop
Most dog owners have probably been puzzled and possibly impatient waiting for their dog to do its business. Instead of just finding a soft area of grass to go number two, they make a whole ritual out of it, spinning in a circle before finally squatting. Luckily, the ultimate pet owners’ question may finally have been answered.
A few theories have circulated about why dogs might circle before pooping, and most are similar to the reasons they spin before lying down. Trampling around in a circle would flatten the grass around, which would keep tall blades from trapping their waste and hitting their butt while they poop.【1】
But Czech researcher Hynek Burda didn’t quite buy into those theories.【2】 And if they were scanning their environment, keeping still to listen and sniff would be more effective than giving the area a quick once-over. Instead, Burda suggested that dogs spin to get a feel for the Earth’s magnetic pull.
The Earth has a magnetic field around it protecting it from radiation from space, and some animals seem to use it to get a sense of where its North and South poles are.【3】 In 2013, Burda published a study in the journal Frontiers in Zoology suggesting dogs have a strong internal compass, too. He and his team spent two years watching 70 dogs poop and pee and recording which way they faced and how strong the magnetic field was.
As it turns out, when the magnetic field was calm, dogs preferred to poop facing either north or south.【4】 The pattern couldn’t explain why dogs like facing the Earth’s poles, but the researchers think it might help them remember where they marked their territory. “Doing so, and calibrating his magnetic compass, is probably easier for him when being aligned with the magnetic field,” Burda told the Washington Post. 【5】
So before you roll your eyes when your dog takes ages to do his business, remember that pet might just be getting scientific about his potty spot.
A.For instance, it’s how birds know which way to migrate.
B.When the magnetic field was less stable, they faced any direction.
C.And when they’re done, this is why dogs kick up the lawn after they pee.
D.Dogs evolved from wolves, which didn’t need to worry much about tall grass.
E.For more weird dog habits, check out the 12 secrets your dog’s tail is trying to tell you.
F.If they can remember which way they were facing, they might find it easier to find that spot again.
G.Another explanation could be that they’re scanning for snakes and predators before they become completely occupied.
24、Marine cold spells are cold versions of heat waves: periods of exceptionally cold water which are able to hurt or help the ecosystems they hit. Today, the oceans experience just 25% of the cold spell days they did in the 1980s, and cold spells are about 15% less intense (强烈的), according to a new study. Weaker cold spells could mean they’re less likely to cause mass die-off events, but having fewer cold spells also means recovery periods from marine heat waves are disappearing.
“Recently, studies have focused more on heat waves and warm ocean temperature events than on the cold events,” said lead author Yuxin Wang, an ocean and climate scientist. “Because marine cold spells have both positive and negative impacts, understanding when, where and why these spells appear is very important for fisheries’ long-term planning.”
Wang and her colleagues analyzed sea surface temperature data from 1982 to 2020, checking for periods of either terribly hot or cold temperatures. They found that oceans are warming, and sea surface temperatures are becoming variable over time. That variability leads the intensities of marine heat waves and cold spells to change at different rates, making it more difficult for scientists to forecast (预测) each.
Establishing global trends in marine cold spells and their relationship to global warming is an important step, but further studies are needed to control regional and local effects. Those local effects include impacts on fisheries. “Marine cold spells play double roles in influencing ecosystems,” Wang said. ”Cold spells can cause terrible impacts. But they can counteract the impacts of heat waves.”
Extreme (极端的) events affect coastal communities and economies, but members of the public might not be aware of how they’re going to intensify in the future. We need to get the word out.” said Darmaraki, a physical oceanographer. “Information about the underlying physical causes of these extreme events can help improve the forecast. That information can be provided for fisheries. The earlier communities know what to expect, the better they can prepare.”
【1】How does the author bring up the topic?
A.By referring to popular views on marine cold spells
B.By describing the bad influence of climate change.
C.By introducing changes in marine cold spells.
D.By comparing cold spells and heat waves.
【2】What does Yuxin Wang mention about cold events in Paragraph 2?
A.Previous data on them is useless.
B.They have little impact on ecosystems.
C.They can last longer with human effort.

【3】What does the underlined word “counteract” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Strengthen.
B.Reduce.
C.Spread.
D.Prove.
【4】What do Darmaraki’s words mainly suggest?
A.The public’s knowledge of extreme events should be improved.
B.Various threats limit the development of coastal communities.
C.Researchers lack experience in dealing with extreme events
D.Weaker cold spells are beneficial to the fishing industry.

26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Panic Buying
Have you ever watched one of the many TV shows set during the apocalypse (大灾难). If it’s not zombies, it’s viruses or natural disasters. One thing that seems to be a typical part of these series is survivors searching for food and resources. Is that why people stockpile food when things go bad?
What is stockpiling? Quite simply it’s when people accumulate a substantial number of goods, for example food or water.
But why do we do it? Consumer psychologist Paul Marsden puts it down to three factors that relate to retail therapy. Firstly, ‘autonomy’ -the idea that people feel the need to be in control. Secondly, ‘relatedness’ - panic shopping helps people to feel connected to the community or other shoppers who are doing the same. Lastly, ‘competence’ - people want to feel like they are ‘smart shoppers’ and doing the right thing. Sander Van der Lindon, an assistant professor of social psychology at Cambridge University, said that a phenomenon known as ‘fear contagion (传播)’ can take hold. People’s decision making stops when stressed, so they follow the actions of other people. If they are panic buying, you will too.
So, can you stop people from stockpiling? Well, supermarkets can ration the amount of products consumers purchase, and governments can try to reassure people that there is no need to panic. However, it seems that it goes against our basic psychology to try and stop people from panic buying.
So, the next time a virus, natural disaster or zombie apocalypse starts, remember that panic buying is probably a given, thanks to our need for retail therapy to manage our emotional state.
