二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   With an improved economymany travelers have been buying first or business class seatsleaving fewer for upgrades(升级).Here are some strategies for getting a free upgrade.

    1. Fly a lot.

This is the most common way to earn a free upgrade. Most airlines reserve some spaces for travelers who fly at least 5000 miles per year. Five years agothis meant half or more of domestic(国内的)first class travelers sat up front for free. But nowairlines are selling more high-price seatsso on popular routes it is not unusual for more than 20 travelers to compete for one or two upgrades. But on routes with fewer business class travelersfree upgrades remain more plentiful.

    2. Use miles.

If you're not a frequent traveler but still have some miles to flyyou may be able to use them for an upgrade. Be carefulthoughas many airlines now ask not just for miles but also a cash co-pay. One example: on flights to EuropeAmerican Airlines charges 5000 milesplus $110for a one-way upgrade from discounted economy class to business class. For most domestic upgradesAmerican Airlines wants 15000 miles plus $ 75.

    3. Get lucky.

Sometimes airlines overbook coach(经济舱),and a few travelers get no seats. Agents try to ensure the airline's most loyal travelers get the nod(被选中). Agents usually have some flexibility to make sure the plane is full and takes off on time. So it's the easiest way for them to do it-they might upgrade someone else out of order.

    4. Save a life.

Flight attendants don't usually upgrade passengers, even when empty seats remain. Doctors and nurses who answer an emergency call are sometimes an exception. If they comfort a passenger, flight attendants might allow them to sit in business or first class for the rest of the flight.

1What might be the main topic of the passage?

    A. The ways to get upgraded on a plane.

    B. How to get on the flight safely and on time.

    C. The best ways to get free flight tickets.

    D. How to save a life on a plane quickly.

2Who can have the chance to get a free upgrade?

    A. The person who always obeys the rules on the flight.

    B. The person who doesn't have to look after a patient.

    C. The person who is a friend of the flight attendants.

    D. The person who flies a lot and has a long flying distance.

3Why might medical personnel be allowed to sit in business or first class sometimes?

    A. Because they would like to talk with flight attendants kindly.

    B. Because they want to have a better rest after a long journey.

    C. Because they need to treat a passenger who is in emergent condition.

    D. Because they are tired of staying with common passengers.

4Where can we find the passage?

    A. A life guide. B. A travel guide.

    C. A shopping guide. D. A pilot guide.

  • 22、Once you find water, a major issue remains: Is it pure? Is it drinkable? And if not, how to make it drinkable? You can make a water filler(过滤器)from a cone of birch bark(桦树皮). This cone is then filled with layers of sand, charcoal(木炭), grasses, and other materials. Grasses and sand help to trap suspended particles (悬浮颗粒). Charcoal helps to remove chemical impurities, but not bacteria. You may have to pass the water through the filter more than once, depending on the site of the filter and what it’s made of. Generally speaking, the bigger the filler, and the more layers you have in it, the better.

The birch bark cone will need to have a fairy small hole in the bottom. The cone will have to be tied with cordage to keep it from opening up. Put a few stones in the very bottom, to help hold your filtering materials in place.

Then pour in layers of charcoal, grasses, sand, and possibly other materials that you feel will help to filter out suspended particles and perhaps even bacteria.

Once you have constructed the filter, simply pour impure water through the filer, catching it in another container at the bottom.

This is basically the “well” method of obtaining water. Dig a hole about 2-4 feet from a water source, such as a river. Allow the hole to fill with water. The water in the hole will likely be reasonably pure.

1How do we get purer water?

    A. Bigger filter and less layers.   B. Smaller filler and more layers.

    C. Larger filter and more layers.   D. Smaller filter and less layers.

2Why should we put some stones in the very bottom?

    A. Killing bacteria.   B. Removing chemicals.

    C. Blocking water.   D. Keeping the materials balanced.

3The text is mainly intended to present a method of ________.

    A. absorbing water   B. cleaning water   C. finding water   D. boiling water

  • 24、Every year, 1.5 million kids around the world die as a result of not getting vaccines (疫苗). This is partly because transporting and storing medicines can be a huge challenge in some countries.

Anurudh Ganesan, 17, knows this firsthand. When he was a baby in India, his grandparents carried him 10 miles to a health clinic in a remote village to receive a vaccine. But by the time they arrived, the vaccines were no longer usable because they had been overheated.

Vaccines, Anurudh later learned, must be kept cool to stay effective. But refrigerating them requires electricity or ice – precious resources that many developing countries lack.

Although Anurudh eventually received the vaccine he needed, his experience as a baby and the sad reality that so many other children aren’t as lucky motivated him to take action. The high school student invented Vaxxwagon, a portable vaccine-carrying device that generates its own power to keep lifesaving medicines cool as they’re delivered to remote areas around the world.

Anurudh first got his idea for Vaxxwagon in 2014. He read several textbooks to learn everything he could about refrigeration, and then he did research online to learn more about vaccines. Rather than relying on electricity or ice, Anurudh figured out a way to use wheels to power a refrigeration system for about eight hours. The entire rechargeable cooling system can be pulled to areas in need of vaccines by a bicycle, a car, or an animal. Eventually, Anurudh took his design to professors at Johns Hopkins University for advice. Not only did they confirm Vaxxwagon could work, but they offered him funding to help build it.

Anurudh was rewarded with the 2015 Google Science Fair LEGO Education Builder Award for his invention. Anurudh says his final goal is to start selling Vaxxwagon to relief organizations, so it can be used to help people around the world.

Anurudh, who plans to pursue engineering degree in college, says, “Don’t give up on your ideas. But always try to help others with your projects. That’s the point of engineering – to help people.”

1Why do many children die every year?

    A. They lack qualified medical teams.

    B. They cannot afford usable medicines.

    C. They don’t have an electricity system.

    D. They have no access to effective vaccines.

    2What is special about Vaxxwagon?

    A. It can serve as a fridge.

    B. It can produce safe vaccines.

    C. It can detect deadly diseases.

    D. It can be a means of transport.

3Which of the following words can best describe Anurudh?

    A. Caring and creative.

    B. Modest and sympathetic.

    C. Loyal and determined.

    D. Honest and hard-working.

    A. Practice makes perfect.
