二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Time spent in a bookshop can be most enjoyable, whether you are a booklover or merely go there to buy a book as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower.

Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings. The desire to pick up a book with an attractive dust-jacket is irresistible, although this method of selection ought not to be followed, as you might end up with a rather dull book. You soon become absorbed in some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent far too much time there and must dash off to keep some forgotten appointment—without buying a book, of course.

This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is, I think, the main attraction of a bookshop. There are not many places where it is possible to do this. A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can wander round such places to your heart's content. If it is a good shop, no assistant will approach you with the unavoidable greeting: "Can I help you, sir?" You needn't buy anything you don't want. In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished browsing. Then, and only then, are his services necessary. Of course, you may want to find out where a particular section is, but when he has led you there, the assistant should retire considerately and look as if he is not interested in selling a single book.

You have to be careful not to be attracted by the variety of books in a bookshop. It is very easy to enter the shop looking for a book on, say ancient coins and to come out carrying a copy of the latest bestselling novel and perhaps a book about brass-rubbing--something which had only slightly interested you up till then. This volume on the subject, however, happened to be so well illustrated and the part of the text you read proved so interesting that you just had to buy it. This sort of thing can be very dangerous. Apart from running up a huge account, you can waste a great deal of time wandering from section to section.

【1】The underlined phrase "dust jacket" means ________.

    A. a kind of clothes B. a paper cover of a book

    C. a dusty book   D. a title of a book

【2】You may spend too much time in a bookshop because________.

    A. the dust jackets are very attractive

    B. you start reading one of the books

    C. it is raining outside

    D. you have to make sure you won't buy a dull book as a present

【3】It can be learned from the text that an assistant should offer you help _______.

    A. as soon as you have entered the shop

    B. just before you finish browsing

    C. only when you have finished reading

    D. when he leads you to a particular section

【4】The author implies that it is very easy to enter a bookshop and buy ______.

    A. a book on ancient coins

    B. a best-selling novel on brass-rubbing

C.a book that only vaguely interests you

    D. a book that unexpectedly fascinates you

【5】 The best title for this passage may be________.

    A. The Attraction of Bookshops

    B. How to Spend Your Time

    C. Bookshops and Their Assistants

    D. How to Select Books

  • 22、   There's no such thing as showering too much, right? Wrong. Despite the practice that many people shower once or twice a day, we're only meant to shower once or twice a week. As experts say, human daily showering is mainly for the love for beauty.

Speaking to TIME, Dr. Elaine Larson, an expert from Columbia University School of Nursing argues, People think they're showering to keep clean, but that's not the case. Bathing will remove smells if you have unpleasant smell on your body or you are back from the gym. But in terms of protecting you from illness, washing your hands regularly is probably adequate." Larson's research turns out, antibacterial soaps and cleaning products are not any better than a regular bar of soap when it comes to lowering your risk of getting diseases, so the fancy soaps you bought are probably a waste of money.

The more you bathe, the thinner and less hydrated your skin becomes. Dry skin opens up gaps for infection and causes bacteria to slip through. Washing can also clear away your skin of its natural oils and may destroy the bacteria that support the immune system on your skin, according to Dr. C. Brandon Mitchell, assistant professor of dermatology at the George Washington University. Both Mitchell and Larson recommend that you shouldn't use antibacterial soaps that are particularly bad for removing essential oils. Mitchell adds," Your body is naturally a well oiled machine. A daily shower isn't necessary. The rest of your body doesn't need much soaping."

So, in terms of your health, you should probably only shower once or twice a week, in terms of how you look and smell, it might be a different story. A recent study shows that smelling bad is the biggest relationship deal-breaker.

1What's the main reason why people bathe frequently according to experts?

    A.For a relaxed feeling. B.For a good appearance.

C.To keep in good health. D.To attract others' attention.

2What is Dr. Elaine Larson's attitude towards antibacterial soaps?

    A.Doubtful. B.Supportive. C.Negative. D.Uncaring.

3What can we infer from the third paragraph?

A.Wet skin is easier to be infected B.Too much bathing is harmful to our skin.

C.Many people have a wrong way of bathing. D.Washing without soaps can cause diseases.

4The purpose of the passage is to __________.

A.introduce some ways of bathing B.prove the disadvantages of bathing

C.give us advice on how to choose a soap D.tell us how often we should take a bath

  • 23、Money Survey

A recent survey has investigated the way American teenagers aged 16-18 relate to money — what they do with it, how they are affected by the recent financial problems in the world and what they expect in the future. The results make interesting reading.

Of those surveyed, almost all have a mobile phone and more than three-quarters have iPod or MP3 player. 66% own a computer, 46% own a TV and 27% own a car. 【1】 Three out of four teens reported that they have bought new clothes in the past three months, and for girls this figure was much higher (86%). If they were given the choice, 63% said they would choose a new pair of jeans rather than tickets to a concert, and 75% would choose a new pair of shoes rather than 50 new MP3 downloads.

Over two-thirds of these young people do some form of work in order to earn money. The average earnings are $1,630 per year, with boys earning more than girls. 【2】 Only 21% of teens are not saving at all. However, if they were given $500, over half of those surveyed said they would spend the money rather than saving it.

【3】 Most of them are finding that they have less to spend and therefore they are shopping more carefully. 55% wait for items to go on sale at reduced prices and 42% do research to compare prices and choose the best deals. Sales of tech gadgets to teens remain strong, but spending on expensive clothing has dropped. More teens are shopping in cheaper stores and looking for second-hand bargains, while some are starting to make their own clothes.

Many teenagers are worried about rising university costs and the difficulty of finding jobs. 【4】 At the same time, 65% expect that their choice of career will be based on their passion for the job, while only 15% think it will depend on how much money they can earn.

A.However, 59% still believe they will be in a better financial position than their parents in the future.

B.Most teens also save money - they are usually saving up for clothes, a piece of technology, future university expenses or a car.

C.Nevertheless, many of them still reported asking parents for money to buy clothes.

D.The world has been hit hard by financial problems lately and 93% of the teens said that this had affected them and their family.

E.However, most of their own money is spent on clothes.

F.They also talk about what matters most in terms of their choice of career.

  • 24、O. Henry was an American writer whose short stories are known for wit, wordplay and clever twist endings. He wrote nearly 600 stories about life in America. He was born on September 11, 1862, in Greensboro, North Carolina. His father was a medical doctor. When Henry was three his mother died and he was raised by his grandmother and aunt.

The funeral was held in New York City, but he was buried in North Carolina, the state where he was born. He was a gifted short story writer and left us a rich legacy of great stories to enjoy.
