21、Over 40 years ago, a country music DJ convention was held every year in Nashville, Tennessee. Many country performers used to attend the convention to give their performances. Fans would go to Nashville hoping to see their favorite performers. In the end, so many fans began showing up in Nashville that a festival named Fan Fair was born.
The first Fan Fair was held in April 1972 in Nashville for four days. Some of the biggest country music stars attended. There were about fifty thousand fans. The first Fan Fair was so successful that the second one in 1973 was planned almost immediately. The date was changed to June, when the weather would be better. Over one hundred thousand fans, attended the second Fan Fair.
Every year brought so many performers and fans to Fan Fair that, in 1982, it was moved to the Tennessee State Fairgrounds. Fan Fair stayed at the Fairgrounds for another nineteen years.
There was always the unexpected during the festival. In 1974, former Beatles Paul McCartney attended. In 1992, more than six hundred reporters from Europe, Asia, and South America went to cover the appearance of a popular star, Billy Ray Cyrus, who had introduced a new country line dance. In 1996, Garth Brooks, who made a surprise appearance, signed autographs for 23 hours.
In 2001, Fan Fair returned to downtown Nashville as the world’s biggest country music festival. Nowadays, over one hundred and twenty-five thousand country music fans go to Nashville every June. 22、As two of the oldest civilizations in the world, China and Egypt are different in culture and language. But what will happen when these two civilizations meet? For many people, it’s unimaginable. But that’s the case in the vlogs of Mohamed Jiahad Mohamed Moustafa, an Egyptian student at Communication University of China.
As a part-time vlogger, Mohamed often shares his experience of Chinese culture on the social media platform Facebook. In one video, for example, Mohamed performs kung fu in Chinese traditional costumes and explains its culture in Chinese. Some other videos show him reading Chinese classic poems and sharing his pronunciation skills, which are quite welcomed among his 20,000 followers.
“Many of my followers are learning Chinese in Egypt,” the 24-year-old said. “But sadly, they know little about Chinese culture and the country.”
Like many Egyptians, Mohamed once believed that all Chinese people could perform kung fu, leaping onto roofs and walking over walls. He thought the country was not that developed. But after he got a scholarship to study in China in 2019, his view changed and he decided to show others what China really looks like.
“China has entered a new era, but stereotypes (刻板印象) and impressions are still of 1970’s China,” Mohamed said. “That’s why I started to shoot vlogs to share Chinese culture in 2019.”
Until now, Mohamed has uploaded more than 50 Chinese culture vlogs on Facebook. But making these vlogs is not easy. Take reading the poem Second Farewell to Cambridge by Chinese poet Xu Zhimo as an example. “I can understand and read every word in the poem,” Mohamed said. “But to resonate with (共鸣) readers, I need to use the appropriate feelings while reading.” So he needed to look for much background information and adjust his emotion to suit each part of the poem.
【1】Why did Mohamed decide to post his videos?
A.He wanted to be famous.
B.He wanted more people to know China.
C.He wanted to make money.
D.He did it for a living.
【2】What’s the function of mentioning the poem Second Farewell to Cambidge?
A.To show his love for Chinese culture.
B.To show Chinese poetry is beautiful.
C.To show he has read many Chinese poems.
D.To show the importance of learning culture.
【3】What’s the key to reading a poem according to Mohamed?
A.Understanding culture.
B.Love for poems.
C.Chinese friends’help.
D.Knowing the author in person.
【4】What is the correct order of the following events?
a. Mohamed comes to China.

23、“Belittle” was first used by Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States.
Many years ago, Buffon, a French naturalist, wrote some books about natural history. The books were a great success even though some critics did not like them. Some critics said, “Buffon is more of a poet than a scientist.”
Thomas Jefferson did not like what Buffon had said about the natural wonders of the New World. It seemed to Jefferson that Buffon had spoken of natural wonders in America as if they were unimportant.
This troubled Thomas Jefferson. He was a naturalist, as well as a farmer, inventor, historian, writer and politician. He had seen the natural wonders of Europe. To him, they were no more important than those of the New World.
In 1788, Thomas Jefferson wrote about his home state, Virginia. While writing, he thought of its natural beauty and then of the words of Buffon. At that moment, Jefferson created a new word-belittle. He said. “Buffon believes that nature belittles her productions on this side of the Atlantic.”
Noah Webster, the American word expert, liked this word. He put it in his English language dictionary in 1806, “Belittle-to make somebody or something small, unimportant.”
Americans had already accepted Jefferson’s word and started to use it. In 1797, the Independent Chronicle newspaper used the word to describe a politician the paper supported. “He is an honorable man,” the paper wrote, “so let the opposition try to belittle him as much as they please.”
In 1872, a famous American word expert decided that the time had come to kill this word. He said, “‘Belittle’ has no chance of becoming English. And as more critical writers of America, like those of Britain, feel no need of it, the sooner it is forgotten, the better.” This expert failed to kill the word. Today, “belittle” is used where the English language is spoken.

24、 My family and I never talked about school as the ticket to a future. I was in the classrooms, but I wasn’t there to learn to write, read or even speak. When it was my turn to read, I wanted to hide. I was 13 years old, but I already hated being who I was.
I had an English teacher, Mr. Creech, who knew I couldn’t read. In one of my first lessons the teacher said that anyone who had a reading age below six had to stand up. I felt so embarrassed. But at the same time, it made me realize that I needed to change the situation. I was determined it wouldn’t happen again. Later that day, Mr. Creech encouraged me and promised he would try his best to help me learn to read. From then on, I never gave up practicing reading.
Then when I was 41 years old, one day, I planned to fly back to Texas to visit my friends and family. On my way from the airport, I saw Mr. Creech buying himself a drink. I rushed over and reached into my pocket to pay for him. “Do I know you?” he asked. “Yes, sir, you do know me,” I answered excitedly. “My name is Anthony Hamilton. You taught me English.” The look on his face told me that he remembered the boy he’d once encouraged.
“I’m so glad I had a chance to see you,” I said. “And Mr. Creech, I have great news to share.” I told him I had learned to read. But that wasn’t all. I had become a published author and an active speaker. “The next time you get another Anthony Hamilton in your classroom, please encourage him to read as well,” I added.
