二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   One of my earliest memories was walking up to the smell of camp smoke and my mother’s hot chocolate. My parents were poor, and we lived in the countryside in Portland. Dad had two jobs and Mom was disabled, but that didn’t stop them from heading into the Cascade Mountains several times a year.

Our clothes were old and worn and our food was usually cheap and simple. However, we were always satisfied with our hot chocolate, which was made in a traditional way handed down from my grandmother to my mother.

There was no store to buy anything we needed. We just had powdered cocoa in our camp.

Mom would set the smoke-blackened coffee pot at the side of the fire and slowly warm the milk, adding chocolate and sugar, and stirring (搅拌) until the contents became thick and rich brown. The wonderful smell of chocolate filled the camp. More than once, I could remember people that we had just met hours before stepping into our camp to enjoy mother’s creation.

Once we were trapped in our tent (帐篷) for days because of a terrible rainstorm. Every morning I was woken up by the attractive smell of Mom’s hot chocolate.

Now, many years have passed, when we head for the mountains, I still use that worn coffee pot. And we always bring extra cups for the neighbours who will certainly turn up.

I have told my family a lot about Mom, and it seems that nothing brings back those warm memories better than sitting around the fire at night and tasting sweet hot chocolate.

  • 22、In a new study, the researchers examined trends in subjective well-being (幸福) over the course of a lifespan based on 443 samples from a total of 460,902 participants. “We focused on changes in three central components of subjective well-being: life satisfaction, positive emotional states and negative emotional states,” explains Professor Susanne Bücker.

The findings show that life satisfaction decreased between the ages of 9 and 16, then increased slightly until the age of 70, and then decreased once again until the age of 96. Positive emotional states showed a general decline from age 9 to age 94, while negative emotional states fluctuated (波动) slightly between ages 9 and 22, then declined until age 60 and then increased once again. The authors identified greater median changes in positive and negative emotional states than in life satisfaction.

“Overall, the study indicated a positive trend over a wide period of life, if we look at life satisfaction and negative emotional states,” Susanne Bücker concludes. The researchers attribute (把……归因于) the slight decline in life satisfaction between the ages of 9 and 16 to, for example, changes to the body and to the social life that take place during puberty. Satisfaction rose again from young adulthood onwards. Positive feelings tended to decrease from childhood to late adulthood. In very late adulthood, all components of subjective well-being tended to worsen rather than improve. “This could be related to the fact that in very old people, physical performance decreases, health often worsens, and social contacts reduce; not least because their peers pass away,” calculates the researcher.

The study highlights the need to consider and promote subjective well-being with its various components across the life, as the authors of the study conclude. Their findings could provide significant guidance for the development of intervention programmes, especially those aimed at maintaining or improving subjective well-being late in life.

【1】What is exactly the subject of the study?

    A.Life satisfaction of the elderly.

    B.Trends in lifelong subjective well-being.

C.Ways to control negative emotional states.

    D.Factors affecting positive emotional states.

【2】When do all components of subjective well-being go worse?

    A.During childhood.

    B.In late adulthood.

    C.At middle age.

    D.In young adulthood.

【3】What is the positive significance of this study?

    A.Teaching to improve physical performance.

B.Giving suggestions on the lifetime increase.

C.Providing a theoretical basis for healthy growth.

D.Guiding to improve the well-being of the elderly.

【4】What’s the best title for the text?

A.When does happiness matter most to us?

B.What does subjective well-being consist of?

C.Why will we be more positive as we get older?

D.How does subjective well-being develop over the lifetime?

  • 23、Four Simple Keys to Transform Your Life

The Power of Choice.Every one of us makes countless choices every day.Every choice we make has an impact on our lives.Even insignificant choices can affect what we experience and how we feel. When hunger strikes, we can reach for a healthy, nutritious snack, or we can choose the sugar high of junk food. The more important the decision, the greater its effect. For instance, how do I act towards that person who treated me badly? Do I generally choose to be passive, or do I actively set clear intentions and create what I want in my life? Every choice we make, however big or small, affects us in some way.

How Do You Make Choices? If you are interested in living a richer, fuller life, there is a foundation upon which you can base all of your decisions which can make life better not only for you, but also for those around you. This foundation is to choose based on what's best for all.Imagine a world where every parent, spouse(配偶), friend, teacher, business person, and politician truly did their best to choose what's best for all involved in every decision they made. We would certainly live in a more caring, supportive world.

It's the Intention."But how do I know what is really best?" you might ask.The answer is simple. It doesn't matter. What matters is not the choice you make, but rather the intention beind your choice. What matters is that whatever decision you make, you are clear in your intention of choosing based on what's best for all.If it later turns out that you made what appears to have been a bad choice, there's no need for guilt.Knowing that you did your best to choose with a sincere desire for what's best for all, your conscience stays clear and open. This then allows you to more easily learn from your mistakes, and to live with a clear heart and mind.

What's Best for Me, Too! Choosing what's best does not mean you have to always sacrifice yourself for others. An overly(过度的) exhausted mother can lose her temper easily. Some time off for this mother might seem selfish, yet in the long run, it can help her to be a better mother to her children. So as we move through each day of our lives, let us remember to include ourselves as we do our best to choose what's best for all.

【1】Which of the following is FALSE?

A.Whenever hunger strikes, we will reach for a junk snack

B.Every choice, however big or small, has an influence on us.

C.Even small choices affect how we feel..

    D.We make choices every day.

    【2】How should we make choices?

A.To be interested in a richer, fuller life.

B.To make life better for ourselves.

C.To imagine a world where everyone did their best.

D.To choose based on what's best for all.

【3】Why does the author say, "What matters is not the choice you make, but rather the intention behind your choice."?

A.Because the choice you make is not important.

B.Because you may have made a bad choice.

C.Because this allows you to stay clear and improve.

D.Because there is no need for guilt.

【4】How to choose what is best for us?

A.We need to devote all our life to others.

B.We need to put away some time for ourselves.

C.We need to sacrifice ourselves for others.

D.We need to be selfless every minute.

  • 24、US Space Agency Returns to Mars with InSight Lander

The American space agency's lander InSight is to arrive on Mars at the end of November,2018. Unlike NASA's Curiosity rover, InSight will not move across the planet's surface. Instead it will become the first spacecraft (航天器) used only for exploring underground. It will study the geography of Mars, searching for signs of Martian (火星的) quakes.

InSight is a project of U.S. and Europe. It is 6 meters long and 1.5 meters wide. It weighs 360kilograms. InSight's 1 .8 -meter robotic arm will put two experiments in place. Both are designed toexplore underground of Mars to learn about the inside.

Bruce Banerdt is the lead scientist for InSight. He viewed the spacecraft as a robot that can take care of itself. "It's got its own brain. It's got an arm. It can listen and feel things. It pulls its own power out of the sun," he noted.

Thomas Zurbuchen, one of the heads in NASA, said the results of the InSight project could "change the way we think about the inside of our earth. " But, first, InSight will have to land on Mars undamaged. Since Mars exploration started in the 1960s, only about 40 percent of the explorations have succeeded.

Tom Hoffman is InSight's project manager. He said earlier successes do not lessen the concerns for each new exploration. "That we ve done it before doesn't mean we' re not nervous and excited about doing it again," he said.

InSight will enter the Martian atmosphere (大气层) traveling at 19,800 kilometers an hour. It will slow for landing on a wide flat area on Mars. If all goes well, InSight could carry out its experiments in about 10 weeks. The InSight project is expected to continue for one Martian year, about two years on Earth.

【1】What is the difference between InSight and NASA's Curiosity rover ?

    A.The size.

    B.The design.

    C.The speed.

    D.The task.

【2】What can we learn from the passage?

A.InSight travels at an unchanged speed.

B.InSight is the project of America and Japan.

C.InSight has the functions (功能) of a robot.

D.InSight is mainly powered by the natural gas.

【3】What will be one of the contributions (贡献) of the InSight project according to Zurbuchen?

A.It will help us understand the geography of Mars.

B.It will change the way we think about the inside of the earth.

C.It will help carry out more experiments on Mars.

D.It will get more information about the reasons for Mars quakes.

【4】What is Hoffman's attitude towards this exploration of the InSight?

    A.Confident.

    B.Satisfied.

    C.Concerned.

    D.Frightened.

I don’t play around trees anymore.” The boy replied, “I want toys. I need money to buy them.” “Sorry, but I don’t have money...but you can pick all my apples and sell them. So you will have money.” The boy was so excited. He picked all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy never came back after that. The tree was sad.

One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was delighted.“Come and play with me!” the tree said.“I am sad and getting tired. I want to go sailing to relax myself.
