21、“Regrets, I’ve had a few. But still, I keep going forward with them,” a pop star sang in his song in 1969. The idea of the song is attractive: what’s done is done, so we should treat regrets properly and move on. Some people take a step further. They say they have no regrets at all and that life should be lived without looking back.
It is easier said than done, though. In 2020, Professor Graham launched the World Regret Survey, the largest survey on the topic ever undertaken. With his research team, Graham asked more than 15,000 people in 105 countries, “How often do you look back on your life and wish you had done things differently?” 78 percent of them said that regrets are at least an occasional part of their life; roughly 21 percent said they feel regretful all the time. Only 1 percent said they never feel regretful.
If you belong to the “no regrets” group, you might think that all regrets are the source of unhappiness. Although filling your life with regrets is indeed bad for you, going to the other extreme may be even worse. To get rid of your regrets doesn’t free you from shame or sorrow. Instead, it leads you to make the same mistakes again and again.
To truly get over our guilt requires that we put regrets in their proper place. Your regrets can teach you to become smarter and more successful-if you let it. First, make a list of your regrets, note how you want to change your behavior, and outline your resolutions going forward. Next, list all the ways that you can invest in your own skills and get started right now.
Life is a journey full of pleasures and pains. To live it well and fully means learning from every bit of it, including the mistakes, and moving forward.
【1】What can we learn from the song in the first paragraph?
A.The singer didn’t have any regret.

A.Unconcerned.

22、Father’s Day is a fairly new celebration in the British calendar compared with Mother’s Day, which has been a very popular and well celebrated festival in the UK for a very long time. 【1】 It was inspired by the actions of an American man named William Smart.
William had a happy family but his wife died giving birth to their sixth child. 【2】 No doubt it was unusual back in those days. His daughter, Sonora Dodd, realised when she was an adult what her father had done for his children. It was one day in the early 1900s, and she was listening to a lecture talking about the importance of Mother’s Day. 【3】
And so the tradition was born. It was set on the third Sunday every June, close to the anniversary (周年纪念) of Sonora’s father s death. Britain took the idea of Father’s Day from the American celebration and it has been celebrated officially since the 1970s. Father’s Day is never quite such the big commercial event that Mother’s Day is.
【4】 Well, most people would buy their fathers a card. The card would probably have a nice message in it saying what a great Dad their father is. 【5】 Popular gifts for Dads are probably ties, chocolates or socks. As a special treat, British people might give their Dad a bit of a rest — make him a cup of tea, or even wash his car to make him feel really appreciated.
A.Some people do buy presents as well.
B.What do British people do for Father’s Day?
C.But the origins of the celebration are American.
D.“ World’s Greatest Dad ” will be written on them.
E.He raised six children alone without remarrying.
F.It has been popular and well celebrated for a long time.
G.Then she thought there should also be a Father’s Day celebration.
23、Toxic positivity is the belief that no matter how difficult a situation is, people should maintain a positive mindset. This attitude doesn’t just stress the importance of optimism, it minimizes and denies (否定) any negative emotions. We all know that having a positive attitude is good for your mental well-being. 【1】 We all deal with painful emotions and experiences. Those emotions, while often unpleasant, are important and need to be felt and dealt with openly and honestly.
Toxic positivity can take a wide variety of forms. For example, when something bad happens, such as losing your job, people tell you to “just stay positive” or “look on the bright side.” 【2】 But they can also be a way of shutting down anything you might want to say about what you are experiencing.
If you’ve been affected by toxic positivity, there are things that you can do to avoid it. 【3】 Negative emotions can cause stress when unchecked, but they can also provide important information that can lead to beneficial changes in your life.
Be realistic about what you should feel. When you are facing a stressful situation, it’s normal to feel stressed, worried, or even fearful. Don’t expect too much from yourself. Focus on self-care and taking steps to improve your situation.
It’s okay to feel more than one thing. If you are facing a challenge, it’s possible to feel nervous about the future and also hopeful that you will succeed. 【4】
Focus on listening to others and showing support. When someone expresses a difficult emotion, don’t shut them down with toxic words. 【5】
A.But the problem is that life isn’t always positive.
B.Such comments are often meant to be comforting.
C.Your emotions are as complex as the situation itself.
D.Manage your negative emotions, but don’t deny them.
E.Pay attention to how you feel after receiving such comments.
F.Instead, let them know such feelings are normal and that you are there to listen.
G.If you are feeling negative emotions, it’s your own fault for not “choosing to be happy.
24、Mary Edwards Walker was the fifth daughter of the family. Her parents, who used to encourage her to think freely and allowed her to wear men's trousers, started the first free school in Oswego, New York, so their daughters would be just as educated as their son. Outside of school, all of the children helped work on the farm. After finishing at her parent's school, Walker attended the Falley Seminary in Fulton, New York. When she graduated, she became a teacher, but she knew she wanted to be a doctor. Later she attended Syracuse Medical College and received her medical degree in 1855 as the second woman to graduate from the college.
When the Civil War began in 1861, Walker wanted to join the Union's efforts. She went to Washington but was not allowed to serve as a medical officer because she was a woman. At the time, the army had no female surgeons, so Walker was only allowed to practice as a nurse. However, in 1863 her request to practice as a surgeon was finally accepted. She became the first female U.S. Army surgeon during the Civil War.
During her work as a surgeon in the war, Walker often crossed the battle lines to care for soldiers and civilians. In April of 1864, she was thought to be a spy and held as a prisoner of war for four months. A month after she was released, she became the assistant surgeon of the 52nd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. After the war, Walker was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Andrew Johnson.
In addition to her work with the army, Walker began to advocate for women's rights. She famously wore men's trousers and advocated for "dress reform". It was going to be my first day at Rainbow Middle Schoo1. Everyone else was coming back from winter holiday, but I was going to be new in this schoo1.
After getting out of my mother’s car, I looked around and noticed that kids were gathering around in the hallways with their friends, whispering and giggling. Not knowing anyone and having nowhere to go, I decided to just wait outside until the bell rang.
I was standing outside Mrs. Everett’s classroom, reading a novel named Oliver Twist, when I glanced back to find someone looking over my shoulder. “Are you new here? Anyway, I absolutely love the novel! It’s one of my favorite novels. By the way, I’m Macy!” the girl said.
I was about to answer when the bell cut me off. Shyly, I entered the classroom to find Mrs. Everett smiling and she led me to a seat. Once everyone came in and sat down, Mrs. Everett called me up to the front and introduced me to the class. As I scanned their faces, I noticed that they looked bored and didn’t seem to care about me. I returned to my seat and listened to the teacher for the rest of the class.
The lunch bell rang and I got out of the classroom, checking my backpack for my lunch. Scanning the lunch tables, I was nervously wondering where I should sit when I saw Macy approaching me. “Hey. If you want, you can come and sit with us,” Macy offered as she pointed to a pink table near the classrooms. Feeling happy, I glanced over where she was pointing and followed her over. Suddenly, my shoelace untied at that moment. Then I knocked into Macy and dropped my lunchbox. I said sorry and picked up my lunchbox. With my head low, I was afraid the other girls at the table would laugh at me.
