21、Brain disease research could be sped up using a smartphone-controlled “plug-and-play” neural implant (神经植入管) invented by scientists from the USA and South Korea.
The researchers, who come primarily from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and the University of Washington, designed the soft device to deliver drugs or coloured lights directly to targeted neurons (神经元), with the goal of accelerating discovery about addiction, depression and pain. The LEDs involved are smaller than a grain of salt, and the drugs are delivered by tiny channels with the thickness of a human hair.
For researchers, the main advantage of the new wireless implant is ease of use. The inventors describe its replaceable drug tube as “lego-like” and “plug-and-lay”, while set-up happens over an “elegant, simple” smartphone interface (界面).
For the subjects, in current testing — the small, soft device won’t impede movement and is safer to use over time.
Current devices used in this field are rigid, so they cause damages in soft brain tissue over time. With the new devices, scientists can now monitor one area of the brain over much longer periods, and with the test subjects moving freely.
“It allows us to better analyze the neural basis of behavior in various ways,” said Michael Bruchas, a professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine who heads the Bruchas Lab. “We are also eager to use the device to help us develop new treatments for pain, addiction and emotional disorders.”
The researchers, who published their findings in the journal Nature Biomedical Engineering, created the implant for laboratory use with animals but would like to develop the technology for clinical applications in the future, meaning one day a similar device could be tested on humans.
Their invention comes after three years of cooperation between the Jeong group at KAIST in Daejeon and the Bruchas Lab in Seattle. The former specializes in soft electronics for wearable and implantable devices, while the latter is a research laboratory focusing on stress, depression, addiction, pain and other diseases.

22、Getting Around on Campus
Thanks to the sunny weather and wide campus, bicycles are one of the most popular means of transportation at Stanford. There are over 12,000 bikes on campus, as well as the full service Campus Bike Shop at Tresidder Union.
To make it safer for walkers and cyclists, the University has designed the center of campus a pedestrian zone; four wheeled vehicles are not allowed. You can ride your bike anywhere on the Stanford campus except in the arcades(拱廊) around the Main Quad, which are reserved for foot traffic.
Some Things to Keep in Mind.
·Register your bike. Whether you purchase a bicycle at Stanford or bring one from home, you must register it with Santa Clara County. You can register your bike:
1. During registration events in White Plaza during New Student Orientation;
2. Online at Parking and Transportation Services (P&TS) website.
·Buy a bicycle lock such as a Kryptonite U-lock and a six-foot cable or chain. Bicycle theft is the most common campus crime, and most bikes that are stolen are locked with easy-to-cut cables. If you lose your bike lock key, call the Campus Bike Shop at (650) 723-9300 to have the lock cut for a fee.
·Park your bike in designed spaces. Be sure not to block a pathway, building entrance, or ramp intended for use by people with disabilities. The Department of Public Safety may remove and impound improperly parked bikes.
·Use a bike light if you are riding at night, and you are advised to wear a helmet at all times. P&TS gives out free bike lights during registration events; the Campus Bike Shop sells highquality helmets for $20.
·Follow traffic laws. Bicyclists are expected to obey the same traffic laws as automobile drivers and may be ticketed if they do not. To avoid a ticket, stop at all stop signs, ride in the direction of traffic, and use the same turn lanes as other drivers. The Bicycling Information section of the P&TS website has additional information on biking at Stanford, including bicycle route maps. You also can learn more about Bicycle Rules and Safety at the California Department of Motor Vehicles website.

23、When people find themselves in difficult conflicts, they often turn to mediation(调解). Mediators are advised to listen attentively, avoid favoring the ideas of one party, and make both sides feel at ease. Surprisingly, new research that my colleagues and I conducted suggests that, to effectively help people settle their conflicts, mediators should adopt an hostile (敌对的) attitude rather than a calming one. A hostile mediator, we find, brings better results than a nice one.
Why would adding more negativity to an already hostile situation prove beneficial? Consider how parents typically react when they can’t get their children to stop quarreling: “I don’t care who started it — both of you, go to your rooms!” At first sight, a calm mediator seems likely to be more effective. But as anyone with brothers or sisters knows parents, seemingly unsympathetic treatment of the situation can have an unusual effect. Children who were troubling each other just now suddenly become more reasonable due to their unkind parents. In our research, we created situations in which pairs of negotiators were part of a heated conflict. In some cases, the mediator had a “nice” approach — calm and polite. In others, he was hostile — aggressive and somewhat rude. Across different types of conflicts, we found that negotiators were more willing and able to reach an agreement in the presence of a hostile mediator than in the presence of a nice one.
The main result of the test is not that hostility pays off. In fact, recent research has documented the social costs of negative behavior. For example, being the target of rude behavior reduces people’s performance on a variety of tasks. Other research shows the social benefits of positive behavior. People are more likely to close deals and become future business partners.
Even with the widespread social benefits of positive behavior and costs of negative behavior, hostility can pay off in certain situations.
