21、 A national survey finds that Americans of all ages are spending more time sitting. And this has health experts worried. Sitting too much, especially when watching television, phones or other screens, can be bad for your health, research suggests. It has been linked to diseases such as diabetes and cancer, and also tied to an increased risk of mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression.
In a new study, researchers analyzed(分析) survey data from more than 50, 000 American children, teenagers and adults. Overall, people sat a lot. Nearly two-thirds of children and teens said they sat at least two hours a day watching television or videos. Teens now sit more than eight hours a day. The data also showed that computer use outside of school or work has been increasing across all ages.
Lin Yang, a public health expert at Alberta Health Services in Calgary, Canada, notes that this trend(趋势) is not unique to the United States. “Studies out of Europe and Australia have also found increases in sitting time,” she says. “This includes sitting for work or school as well as driving rather than walking or riding.”
Erin O’Loughlin, an exercise psychologist at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, notes there are many reasons children and teens have been sitting more. These include less outdoor play, more screen time. And schools have been reducing opportunities for exercise during the school day.
“We all need to move more and sit less, ”says Lin Yang. “It’s important to not just switch(转变) from sitting to standing but to actually move around. ”And spending more time outside helps, she notes. This is good for fitness and for exposure(接触) to the sun, an important source of the body’s vitamin D. If getting more exercise sounds difficult, don’t stress: take it one step at a time.
【1】How did the researchers carry out the new study?
A.By studying some cases.
B.By collecting data on 50, 000 Canadians.
C.By surveying people of different ages.
D.By making some experiments.
【2】What can be learnt from Lin Yang’s words?

22、Imagine you’re standing in line to buy an after-school snack at a store. You step up to the counter (柜台) and the cashier scans your food. Next, you have to pay. But instead of scanning a QR code (二维码) with your smartphone, you just hold out your hand so the cashier can scan your fingerprint. Or, a camera scans your face, your eyes or even your ear.
Now, this type of technology might not be far away. As technology companies move away from the traditional password, biometric security (生物识别技术), which includes fingerprint, face and voice ID, is becoming increasingly popular.
But despite its popularity, experts warn that biometrics might not be as safe as we’d imagined.
When introducing the new iPhone’s Face ID feature at Apple’s Keynote Event, Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president, said, “The chance that a random (随机的) person in the population could look at your iPhone X and unlock it with their face is about one in a million.”
But it’s already been done. In a video posted on community website Reddit, two brothers showed how they were each able to unlock the same iPhone X using their own face. And they aren’t even twins.
“We may expect too much from biometrics,” Anil Jain, a computer science professor, told CBS News. “No security systems are perfect.”
Earlier this year, Jain found a way to trick biometric security. Using a printed copy of a thumbprint, she was able to unlock a dead person’s smartphone for police, according to tech website Splinter.
“It’s good to see biometrics being used more,” Jain told CBS News, “because it adds another factor for security. But using multiple (多种的) security measures is the best defense (保障).”

A.It often fails to recognize its owner’s face.

D.It should be used with other security measures.

24、In 1943, when I was 4, my parents moved from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, to Fairbanks, Alaska, where adventure was never very far away.
We arrived in the summer, just in time to enjoy the midnight sun. All that sunlight was fantastic for Mom's vegetable garden. Working in the garden at midnight tended to throw her timing off, so she didn't care much about my bedtime.
Dad was a Railway Express agent and Mom was his clerk. That left me in a mess. I usually managed to find some trouble to get into. Once I had a little fire going in the dirt basement of a hotel. I had tried to light a barrel (桶) of paint but couldn't really get a good fire going. The smoke got pretty bad, though, and when I made my exit, a crowd and the police were there to greet me. The policemen took my matches and drove me home.
Mom and Dad were occupied/busy in the garden and Dad told the police to keep me, and they did! I had a tour of the prison before Mom rescued me. 1 hadn't turned 5 yet.
As I entered kindergarten, the serious cold began to set in. Would it surprise you to know that I soon left part of my tongue on a metal handrail(栏杆) at school?
As for Leonhard Seppala, famous as a dog sledder (驾雪橇者), I think I knew him well because I was taken for a ride with his white dog team one Sunday. At the time I didn't realize what a superstar he was, but I do remember the ride well. I was wrapped heavily and well sheltered (保护) from the freezing and blowing weather.
In 1950, we moved back to Coeur d'Alene, but we got one more Alaskan adventure when Leonhard invited us eight years later by paying a visit to Idaho to attend a gathering of former neighbors of Alaska.
