21、It was in my first year of work as a doctor. My mouth was dry, my palms sweaty and my voice trembling. The only thing that kept me focused was the thought that things were so much worse for the family I was talking to.
A woman in her early twenties had been brought in after a road traffic accident. She had suffered multiple injuries and had been rushed up to theatre. The surgeons had been unable to save her life and she died on the table. The consultant(会诊医生)told the woman’s family the news. “Tom, I think it would be nice if it came from you,” my consultant said.
I stared blankly. “What?” I asked
“About organ donation,” he replied. I swallowed hard. Surely this would be the last thing they’d want to talk about. It felt very awkward and ill-timed to be considering this kind of conversation while they were being stuck in sadness. But the problem with organ donation is that every minute is important. The clock is ticking because the sooner organs can be transplanted, the better the chance they will survive in the recipient’s(接受者)body.
I began to feel sick. I opened the door and sat opposite them, convinced that I was only going to make things worse for them
“It’s what she’d have wanted,” the mother said before I’d even finished. The father nodded. “She was always so generous,” her father added. As my consultant and I left them, it occurred to me that I’d been wrong in thinking it would be an awkward conversation. Nothing could take away the pain of having lost their daughter. Yet this last, final act had comforted them and helped them feel that the spirit of their daughter lived on in this act of generosity. Strangely, it is one of the most heart-warming conversations I have ever had.

23、 When high school head teacher Mervyn Tennant retired and moved to the fishing village of Oracabessa Bay on Jamaica's north coast, he had to witness a regular and heartbreaking sight-some people illegally hunting the critically endangered Hawksbill sea turtles(海龟)and stealing their eggs.
Prized on the black market for their great qualities, sea turtle eggs fetched much more than an average wage in the community. "If they worked on a building site, that would be equal to a month's pay," Mr Tennant says.
Oracabessa Bay is where the author Ian Fleming created James Bond, probably the world's most famous fictional spy. It is now a tourist attraction, attracting visitors from all over the world. However, until recently the landscape hid a cruel reality-coral reefs were dying off, and fish numbers had dropped increasingly. The tourism and fishing industries were threatened.
Mr Tennant is one of the many residents of the village who decided to fight back to protect not only the turtles, but entire community's ecosystem. The Oracabessa Bay Fishing Sanctuary(OBFS)was established in 2019. It is a non-profit organization.
In 2020 the National Environment and Planning Agency(NEPA)had painted a cruel picture for sea life. It reported that coral reefs were over 90 percent threatened and had been taken over by fast-growing algae(海藻).Fish numbers were low and virtually all sea turtles and their eggs were being hunted on the nesting beach.
Fishers, marine biologists, hotel owners united not only to restore corals, fish stock and sea turtles, but also to establish sustainable livelihoods and a community capable of living in harmony with nature.
With support of the Global Environment Facility's Small Grants Programme(SGP)and UNDP, OBFS set out to preserve the marine ecosystem in the 74-hectare natural reserve and to bring back fish, sea turtles and coral.

D.Its ecosystem is breaking down.
【4】What is the goal of OBFS?
A.To fight back fast-growing algae.

24、Life often requires people to join in unpleasant situations. Rather often, these unpleasant situations do not happen on their own, but happen because of other people’s actions and words. Fortunately, there are useful ways to deal with conflicts (冲突).
The best way to solve a conflict is not to let it happen. Nothing useful comes out of a conflict. It is a total waste of time and energy for both sides and thus everyone should try his best to prevent conflicts. To do this, you will need to learn the points of view your potential opponents (对手) share and the benefits of understanding people around you.
If the conflict has already arisen, one of the best methods to settle disagreements is to treat the situation with humour. It does not mean, however, that you must ignore your opponent’s arguments and make jokes about them; it means that you should be in a friendly atmosphere, saying difficult-to-express things with a bit of humour. Humour will help you reduce anger and rethink problems to make them look easier to settle, and set your opponent’s mind on working out the problem with you, not against you. This way, a conflict can become an opportunity for building a greater connection between you and your opponent.
If the situation turns verbally abusive (恶语中伤的), put a stop to it. Firmly but calmly state: “You’re very angry right now and you’re saying things you don’t mean. I’m going to excuse myself. We can talk again after you calm down.” Then leave the room or ask your opponent to leave.
【1】What can we learn about conflict prevention (预防)?
A.It does good to both sides.
B.It provides a better solution.
C.It results in verbal arguments.
D.It causes some misunderstandings.
【2】How can you deal with your opponent with humour?
A.Play a trick on him.
B.Laugh at him seriously.
C.Overlook his angry words.
D.Explain to him amusingly.
【3】What will you do when you are under verbal attack from a man?
A.Say sorry and leave him.
B.Put a stop to the situation.
C.Put the man beneath his dignity.
D.Deal with him as he deals with you.
25、Stories about the problems of tourism have been numerous in the last few years. Yet it does not have to be a problem. Although tourism inevitably affects the region in which it takes place, the costs to these fragile (脆弱的) environments and their local cultures can be ______. Indeed, as has happened with some Alpine villages,it can even be a(n) ______ for refreshing local cultures. And a growing number of adventure tourism ______ are trying to ensure that their activities benefit the local population and environment over the long term.
In the Swiss Alps, communities have decided that their future depends on combining tourism more effectively with the local ______. Local concern about the rising number of second home developments in the Swiss Pays-d’Enhaut resulted in ______ being imposed on their growth. There has also been a new interest in cheese production in the area, providing the locals with a ______ source of income that does not depend on outside visitors.
Many of the Arctic tourist destinations have been exploited by ______ companies, who employ temporary workers and send most of the profits back to their home base. But some Arctic communities are now operating tour businesses themselves, thereby ensuring that the benefits increase ______. For instance, a native corporation in Alaska, employing local people, is running an air tour from Anchorage to Kotzebue, where tourists eat Arctic food, walk on the lands and watch local musicians and dancers.
Native people in the desert regions of the American Southwest have followed ______ strategies, encouraging tourists to visit their towns and reservations to ______ high-quality handicrafts and artwork. Some have established highly profitable stoneware businesses, while the Navajo and Hopi groups have been similarly ______ with jewelry.
Too many people living in fragile environments have lost control over their economies, their culture and their environment when tourism has spread through their homelands. Merely restricting tourism cannot be the ______ to the imbalance because people’s desire to see new places will not just disappear. ______, communities in fragile environments must achieve greater control over tourism ventures in their regions, in order to ______ their needs and desires with the demands of tourism. A growing number of communities are ______ that, with firm combined decision-making, this is possible. The critical question now is whether this can become the normal status, rather than the exception.
