21、After two years of working from home, we have adapted to communicating digitally, in short bursts of time. Remember in Before Times you could head to the gym after work and then get dressed for dinner and a night out? The pandemic(疫情) has changed this. Our social batteries have run out of charge. It’s been a long time since we had to perform our social role for an extended period.
For 23-year-old Jennie, the excitement of her friends and family to restart their social lives has left her astonished. “At the minute my parents are planning a trip abroad and I keep postponing getting back to them with a date,” she explains. “They don’t know it’s because of all of this. Just the thought of being in a room full of people is scary, it’s like going back to school.”
Heather Garbutt, psychotherapist of The Counselling & Psychotherapy Centre says communication is key to recharging your unused social battery. “Take it slowly and don’t immediately organise a large get-together,” she advises. “Go for a walk with somebody for no more than half an hour and gently get used to being with people again. It may actually be a shock to our system which has been shut down to some degree to cope with absence. We may have that longing to be with others, but that doesn’t mean we are free from anxiety. It would be good to start off with a conversation about what it’s going to be like when you are all together again.”
She says finding some casual topics to discuss also works. Understand that many of you may feel a bit awkward after being physically apart for so long. It’s a bit like learning to walk again after you’ve broken a leg. It may all be off-balance to begin with but you will find a new steadiness with practice. Whatever happens post-pandemic, your loved ones can’t judge if you want to take it easy and not engage in the festivities immediately. We are recovering from a post-pandemic stress disorder, after all.

22、Foldable future has arrived
Tablets are really useful devices, but their big screens always make them as a burden to carry around without a bag. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet that could be folded up and fit into the hand?
Now something like a tablet-shaped but foldable phone is about to show up. In February, South Korean electronics company Samsung and China’s Huawei both produced foldable phones, The Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X. Mobile phone use has entered the “foldable future”, The Verge said.
The technology could change our lives in meaningful ways. These devices, because of their bendable screens, give us the larger screens we want. Meanwhile, they still fit easily into the pocket.
The technology could change other devices too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers. In crowded modern cities, they will help us to make full use of space.
In a speech, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison, called the foldable screen “the base for the smartphone of tomorrow”. “It’s a white paper for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.
According to tech news website Android Authority, the necessary parts of foldable phones were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out of every 10 OLED screens produced were not perfect. Today, that 10 percent rate has been improved to between 50 and 90 percent. However, at present these foldable devices are expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17,500 RMB. That’s a price that few people will be able to afford.
But if the foldable device isn’t going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that it is coming. Patrick Moorhead, an industry analyst told The Verge, “Few are debating if foldable mobile screens are the future of smartphones; the only question is when and by whom.

23、SnotBot is on a mission. The toaster-sized drone(无人机)flies over the open ocean, directly above an unusual whale. On a boat nearby,Andy Rogan smiles with joy. Rogan has been studying whales in his entire career but had never seen this species.
Back in 2011,Lian Pin Koh and Serge Wich, conservation experts, wondered if there might be an easier way to get data of animals in the wild. Wildlife researchers often walk through forests. They may look closely at whales from boats or stay in helicopters to view animals from above. Such trips are usually dangerous. Plus, their noise may scare animals. And helicopters can’t fly very far over the ocean because there’s nowhere to land or refuel.
“We thought,’What if you fly over them with a flying camera?’’says Wich. So they put together a drone from a remote-control model airplane and camera equipment. And it did the trick. On a test flight, the drone caught an image of an orangutan(猩猩)at the top of a very tall tree. The pair realized this was just the beginning of a whole new way of doing conservation work.
Now Wich and his colleagues are building AI that automatically locates and recognizes animals. They call their project Conservation Al. When someone uploads an image or video, the model analyzes the data. Then the model recognizes anything it can. In the future,an AI model could keep watch, instead of forest guards. It could send warnings when seeing doubtful activities..
The team tested this idea in a study in East Africa. Volunteers in Tanzania pretended to be poachers(偷猎者). The researchers made drones fly over the actors at different times of the day. Overall, people looking at the drone images did a better job than the Al model at finding pretend poachers. The model picked out many things that weren’t people at all. But the model found poachers that most people missed. With a little more work, Wich thinks that systems like this will make it easier for conservationists to better protect endangered animals.
【1】What can we say about the researchers’ traditional way of studying animals?
A.It’s risky and ineffective.
B.It’s demanding and cheap.
C.It can cause great harm to wildlife.

24、Elephants are truly incredible (难以置信的) animals. August 12 is World Elephant Day, which means to help save elephants. What do you know about elephants? Here are some facts you may not know.
We know that elephants are large. But do you know that elephants often avoid eating a type of acacia tree (金合欢树)? Because it is home to ants and an elephant doesn’t want to get the ants inside its trunk. Its trunk is full of sensitive endings.
Female elephants live in groups of about 15 elephants. The oldest in the group is the leader. She not only decides when and where they move but also determines when they rest all the year. Male elephants leave the female group between the age of 12 and 15. But they aren’t loners (孤独者). They live in all-male groups.
Asian elephants don’t run. Running requires lifting all four feet at once. But elephants filmed in Thailand always keep at least two on the ground at all times.
Elephants have passed the mirror test. They recognize themselves in a mirror. According to tests, great apes, and dolphins also have this ability.
Elephants can get sunburned so they can take care to protect themselves. “Elephants will throw sand on their backs and on their heads to keep them from getting sunburned and to keep off bugs off.” said Tony Barthel, working at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. How do elephants protect their young? Adult elephants will put them in sand and then they will stand over the little ones as they sleep.
Some farmers in Kenya protect their fields from elephants by lining the borders with beehives (蜂箱). Not only are their crops saved, but the farmers also get some more money from the honey.

【3】What do we infer about male elephants?
