二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、If you look up in the sky, you probably see, at some point, an aircraft. And behind that aircraft are white, fluffy streaks (条纹). And that's what we call a contrail. Contrails are made up of ice crystals that form when aircraft engines emit exhaust (废气) that hits the cold air.

The ice crystals reflect incoming light from the sun back into space, which has a cooling effect on the atmosphere. But the contrails also stop heat coming up from the ground from escaping into space. It is reflected back down toward the ground. And so that's a warming effect. Stettler, an engineer from Imperial College London, says, on balance, contrails warm the atmosphere more than they cool it. And that's mainly because the cooling effect due to reflecting of sunlight can only happen during the day, when the sun's shining, whereas the warming effect due to trapping of outgoing heat happens all of the time.

How long do contrails last? This depends on the atmospheric conditions at the altitude where a plane is flying. Some contrails can form clouds that last for up to 18 hours. During that time, they spread out, trapping even more heat. This process allows contrails to warm the planet about as much as the carbon dioxide emissions from aircraft.

But when Stettler and his team analyzed flight data they obtained of Japan airspace, they found that most contrail warming was caused by just 2 percent of flights. And most of those flights originated in the late afternoon because as the sun goes down, cooling can no longer offset (抵消) the warming. And the warming effect continues to exist throughout the evening into the night. But what if the contrails that contribute the most to warming could be got rid of?

【1】What does "it" in paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.A cooling effect.

    B.Heat from the ground.

    C.Light from the sun.

    D.Exhaust hitting the cold air.

【2】What can be learned about contrails?

A.They can easily disappear in the air.

B.They actually contribute to global warming.

C.Their cooling effect happens all of the time.

D.Their warming effect is usually overlooked.

【3】What is most likely to be talked about next?

A.A future plan for Japan airspace.

    B.The negative influence of contrails.

    C.Other potential causes of contrails.

D.A possible way to remove contrails.

  • 23、       On October 19, 1959, the first Special English program was broadcast on the Voice of America. It was an experiment. The goal was to communicate by radio in clear and simple English with people whose native language is not English. Experts said the goal was admirable, but the method would not work. They were proved wrong. The Special English programs quickly became some of the most popular on VOA. And they still are.

Forty years later, Special English continues to communicate with people who are not fluent in English. But during the years its role has expanded. It also helps people learn American English. And it provides listeners, even those who are native English speakers, with information they cannot find elsewhere.

Today, Special English broadcasts around the world seven days a week, five times a day. Each half-hour broadcast begins with ten minutes of the latest news followed by 20 minutes of feature programming. There is a different short feature every weekday about science, development, agriculture and environment, and on the weekend, about news events and American idioms.

Three elements make Special English unique. It has a limited vocabulary of 1500 words. Most are simple words that describe objects, actions or emotions. Some are more difficult. They are used for reporting world events and describing discoveries in medicine and science. Special English is written in short, simple sentences that contain only one idea. No idioms are used. And Special English is spoken at a slower pace, about two-thirds the speed of Standard English. This helps people learning English hear each word clearly. It also helps people who are English speakers understand complex subjects.

Through the years, Special English has become a very popular tool for teaching English, even though it was not designed as teaching program. It succeeds in helping people learn English in a non-traditional way. Individuals record the programs and play them over and over to practice their listening skills. In countries around the world, English teachers assign Special English to their students. They praise it for improving their students’ ability to understand American English and for the content of the programs. Universities and private companies in many countries produce packages of Special English materials for student use.

  • 24、In April 2014,the world's oldest known message in a bottle was discovered floating in theBaltic Sea. It had spent 101 years lost in the ocean! The message was finally sent to the author's granddaughter.

A German fisherman named Konrad Fischer found the brown bottle near Kiel,Germany. He said he nearly threw the bottle back into the water after pulling it out of a fishing net. Then he noticed something inside.

The bottle in good condition contained a Danish postcard with two German stamps, dated May 17,1913. Although dampness had made most of the writing illegible(字迹模糊的),thereadable part of the message asked whoever found it to return it to an address in Berlin. It even contained two stamps to pay for postage.

From the address, researchers found that the postcard was written by a man named Richard Platz, who was 20 years old when he wrote the message. While he was hiking on the Baltic coast with a nature appreciation group,he threw the bottle into the sea. Then the researchers began a search for any living relatives of his. Sure enough, they were able to find his 62-year-old granddaughter,Angela Erdmann, who still lives in Berlin.

It was almost unbelievable,Erdmann said upon being presented with her grandfather's bottle and message.“That was a pretty moving moment. Tears rolled down my face."

Erdmann never knew her grandfather, who died in 1946,but says that the discovery of the bottle has made her want to learn more about him.

The bottle remained on display at the International Maritime Museum in Hamburg until May 1 .After that, the researchers examined the postcard and tried to figure out the meaning of the rest of the message.

    A. he thought it would bring him good luck

    C. He believed his postcard would be kept secret at sea forever.

    D. He thought he could make friends with the finder of the bottle.
