二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Long pieces from the outer shell of the coconut (椰子), known as coir (椰子壳粗纤维), are often used with other materials to build barriers. The barriers are used to protect beaches from getting washed away by the force of waves. The coconut material is widely available and costs a lot less than barriers made of other materials, such as wood, steel or concrete. And it is designed to biodegrade (生物降解) or break down, over time.

Some projects create “living shorelines” made from natural elements rather than hard materials. One is being built along part of an eroded (被侵蚀的) riverbank in Neptune, New Jersey. The effort has already greatly improved areas that suffered major erosion damage. “We’re always trying to reduce wave energy while protecting the shoreline,” said Tim Dillingham, the group’s director. “And whenever we can, we like to employ nature-based solutions.”

Another project is happening in Boston. That is where Julia Hopkins, an assistant pro-fessor at Northeastern University, is using coir, wood chips and other materials to create floating barriers to slow the force of waves. Hopkins is pleased with the results. She says the coconut material is not costly and is actually being recycled rather than being thrown away.

Two projects in East Providence, Rhode Island, used coconut material in 2020. The next year,731 meters of damaged shoreline in New York’s Jamaica Bay were treated through a project that also included coconut coir material. Similar projects have been carried out in the states of Delaware and Texas.

The method doesn’t always work, however. In 2016, the Felix Neck Wildlife Refuge in Edgartown, Massachusetts, built barriers around a salt marsh that had eroded in the past. While the effort did help reduce erosion for a while, the material did not last long because of strong waves.

Suzan Bellincampi is the refuge’s director. “The project is really interesting in terms of what we want to do and how we adapt it,” she said. “It’s not for every site. It works in some places; it doesn’t work in all places.”

【1】What can be known about the coconut material?

    A.It can last longer.

    B.It is eco-friendly.

    C.It is harder and stronger.

    D.It can reduce production time.

【2】Which project failed to function for a long time?

    A.The one in Boston.

    B.The one in Neptune.

    C.The one in Edgartown.

    D.The one in East Providence.

【3】What’s Suzan Bellincampi’s attitude to the coconut-based project?

    A.Objective.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Unconcerned.

    D.Disapproving.

C.Shorelines are taking on a new look

D.Material from coconuts helps protect coastal areas

  • 22、One day a man was asked to paint a boat by the owner. He brought with him paint and brushes and began to paint the boat a bright red, as the owner asked him.

While painting, he noticed that there was a small hole in the hull(船身), and decided to repair it. When finished painting, he received his money and left.

The next day, the owner of the boat came to the painter and presented him with a nice check, much higher than the payment for painting.

“You’ve already paid me for painting the boat, Sir!” The painter said.

“But this is not for the paint job. It’s for having repaired the hole in the boat.”

“Ah! But it was such a small service. Certainly, it’s not worth paying me such a high amount for something so insignificant.”

“My dear friend, you do not understand. Let me tell you what happened. When I asked you to paint the boat, I forgot to mention about the hole. When the boat dried, my kids took the boat and went on a fishing trip. They did not know that there was a hole. I was not at home at that time. When I returned and noticed they had taken the boat, I was desperate because I remembered that the boat had a hole. Imagine my relief and joy when I saw them returning from fishing. Then, I examined the boat and found that you had repaired the hole! You see, now, what you did? You saved the lives of my children! I do not have enough money to pay your ‘small’ good deed.”

So just repair all the “holes” you find, because you never know when one is in need of us or when we’re helpful and important to someone.

    B.Thankful.

【4】What does the story tell us?

    C.Helping others is helping ourselves.

    D.Opportunities are everywhere

  • 23、Need for closure is a psychological term that describes a person's desire for a firm answer to a question. Our need for closure is our natural preference for definite answers over confusion and uncertainty. Every person has their own baseline level of need for closure. It likely evolved via natural selection.

What I find really fascinating is how our need for closure is affected by the situation we're in. Our need for closure rises when we have to act rather than just observe, and it matters much more when we're rushed, or bored, or tired. Any stress can make our discomfort with uncertainty increase, and a high need for closure negatively influences some of our most important decisions: who we decide to trust, whether we admit we're wrong and even how creative we are.

In hiring, for instance, a high need for closure leads people to put far too much weight on their first impression. It's called the Urgency Effect. In one experiment, psychologists tried to lower people's need for closure by telling them, right before participants are about to make various judgments of a job candidate, that they'll be responsible in some way for them, or that their judgments have serious consequences.

In making any big decision, it's not enough just to know that we should take our time. We all know that important decisions shouldn't be rushed. The problem is that we don't keep that advice in mind when it matters. So, one of the best solutions is to formalize the reminders. Before making important decisions, write down not just advantages and disadvantages but what the consequences could be. Also, think about how much pressure you're under. If your need for closure is particularly high that day, it's even more important to think twice.

1How does "need for closure" probably come into being?

    A. By accident.   B. By nature.

    C. By acquiring.   D. By imitating.

2It can be inferred that a high need for closure ______.

    A. brings about more stress

    B. leads to not so good decisions

    C. causes discomfort and uncertainty

    D. promotes one's creativity

3In the experiment the psychologists reduced participants’ need for closure by telling them to ______.

    A. value their first impression

    B. be responsible for their boss

    C. be cautious about their judgments

    D. pay little attention to the consequences

4What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?

    A. More helpful solutions to high need for closure.

    B. Some serious consequences of making decisions.

    C. Other approaches to making important decisions.

    D. Another strategy to escape the pressures of modern life.

  • 24、“WHAT CAN I HELP YOU WITH?” says a voice from an iPhone. It’s Siri, and she’s ready to follow your voice commands to search the Internet, text someone, or play a song. Siri is an example of artificial intelligence(AI), or a computer program that can think. The way Siri thinks is very different from how a person thinks. She doesn’t have a brain. Instead, she relies on code in a computer program to understand speech and answer questions. And some questions are still too difficult for her to answer.

However, AI programs like Siri are getting smarter and smarter every year. In 2011, an AI named Watson defeated two human champions on the quiz show Jeopardy! Computer programs can also drive cars, perform science experiments, and produce their own artwork.

Someday, artificial intelligence will most likely surpass human intelligence. Once this happens, computers will think, plan, and act at a level that human beings can’t understand. In his book Superintelligence, Nick Bostrom writes, “As the fate of the gorillas now depends more on us humans than on the gorillas themselves, so the fate of our species would depend on the actions of the machine superintelligence.”

If a superintelligence wanted to rule the world, Bostrom argues, it would easily do so. It could also wipe out all humans. Or just ignore us. Whatever it did, we likely wouldn’t have much control. He’s not the only one worrying. In 2015, a group of great scientists, including Stephen Hawking, wrote an open letter that asks anyone researching AI to proceed carefully. AI has the potential to benefit society greatly, but “our AI systems must do what we want them to do.” they write. What do you think? If people create a super intelligent AI, will we be able to control it?

What will happen to us if a superintelligent AI starts making decisions on its own?

【1】What can Siri do now according to the passage?

A.She can think like a human.

B.She can answer all kinds of questions.

C.She can follow your voice commands.

D.She can make decisions on her own.

【2】What does the writer want to show by mentioning AI Watson?

    A.AI is getting increasingly smart.

    B.Computer science is developing fast.

C.AI performs best in the quiz show Jeopardy.

D.Computer programs can do a variety of jobs.

【3】What does the underlined word “surpass” mean in paragraph 3?

    A.Be similar to.

    B.Do better than.

    C.Compete against.

    D.Be junior to.

【4】What is Nick Bostrom’s attitude towards superintelligence?

    A.Supportive.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Cautious.

    D.Objective.
