21、 Weather forecasts help us prepare for the future. Not only do they warn us of potentially dangerous weather headed our way, but they also give us an idea of what to expect in terms of temperature and chance of precipitation(降雨量), so we can dress and equip ourselves appropriately.
【1】 Forecasts are a prediction based on an educated guess. Since there are a wide variety of factors that go into a forecast, it’ s possible for meteorologists(气象学家) to guess wrong from time to time. Fortunately, modern technology has allowed forecasters to become much more accurate over the last decade.
Today, meteorologists use complicated mathematical models to predict the weather with the help of powerful supercomputers and tons of observational data from land, sea, and air weather stations around the world. Where does all this data come from? 【2】 Many people create their own backyard weather stations to measure temperature and precipitation. They can report their observations to local meteorologists to help improve local forecasts.
Technologically advanced weather stations are established by meteorologists all over the world. 【3】 Various tools are used to measure air pressure, wind speed, relative humidity (湿度), etc.
To get data from the seas and the upper atmosphere, data-collection tools and instruments may be tied to ships, airplanes, and even buoys (浮标) in the middle of the ocean. 【4】 They can be used on a global scale to spot weather trends for large areas.
All these tools around the world produce millions of pieces of weather-related observational data every single day. 【5】 Current data is compared to similar patterns that have occurred in the past to determine what will likely happen in the future.
A.Sometimes it comes from common people like you.
B.However, weather forecasting is not a perfect science.
C.They collect and share data to help improve forecasts.
D.Supercomputers process that data to produce forecasts.
E.Weather balloons and weather satellites also provide observational data.
F.Forecasts about temperature and precipitation are important to agriculture.
G.Data from weather satellites are used in areas where traditional data sources are not available.

23、New research doubts the idea that dogs are naturally more tolerant and friendly than wolves. In the tests whether they can work together, wolves perform better than their domesticated relatives. Scientists say the findings challenge assumptions about how dogs were domesticated from wolves and came to live with humans.
Actually, wolves are highly social animals. They live in close family groups, raise puppies together and hunt in groups. This sort of behaviour is not seen in modern dogs. To test whether cooperation comes naturally to wolves and dogs, scientists carried out a classic behaviour experiment known as the rope-pulling test. The animals are rewarded with a large thick piece of raw meat only if they pull the rope together. The scientists found that dogs succeeded at only two of 472 attempts. Wolves, however, managed the task 100 times during 416 attempts. The experiment took place at the Wolf Science Center in Vienna, Austria, where wolves and dogs are raised from puppies in the same environment. This gives a clear understanding of the natural behaviour of both animals, away from the influence of humans.
Dr Krishna Veeramah of Stony Brook University said wolves are the only big carnivore that has been domesticated. “It is possible that their social behaviour was key to this, and thus studies like this help piece together more of the puzzle,” he explained. The story of how dogs came to be domesticated from wolves is complex and hotly debated. Some time around 30,000 years ago, wolves moved to the edges of human camps to search for leftovers. The long process of domestication began to change the behaviour and genes of wolves and they eventually evolved into the dogs that we know today.
Dogs and wolves are similar in physical appearance, although they have different instincts and temperament. The research suggests there is more to learn about the effects of domestication.
【1】What does the rope-pulling experiment intend to do?
A.To prove that wolves are more domesticated than dogs.
B.To prove that wolves are more socialized than dogs.
C.To prove wolves tend to become human assistants.
D.To prove wolves can cooperate with dogs to achieve common goals.
【2】What does the underlined word “this” in Para. 3 refer to?
A.It refers to the process of cooperation.
B.It refers to the process of domestication.
C.It refers to the process of searching for leftovers.
D.It refers to the process of change in appearance.
【3】What do we learn about the new finding according to the article?
A.Wolves are one of many domesticated big carnivores.
B.It’s based on experiments conducted by world-famous biologists.
C.The process of wolves’ domestication needs further investigation.
D.Despite the similarity between wolves and dogs, they are not related in genes.
【4】What is the main idea of the text?
A.To call on people to pay attention to wolves’ living conditions.
B.To cast doubts on the possibility of wolves being good and domesticated.
C.To state why dogs are more tolerant and domesticated than wolves.
D.To point out the new finding is different from the previous assumption.
24、 Are you interested in higher education in the United States? The following advice might help you.
● College, University or Institute
College and universities offer undergraduate degrees in arts and sciences. And both can help prepare young people to earn a living. But many colleges don't offer graduate studies. Universities are generally bigger, offer more programs and do more research. An institute of technology can offer a wide choice of programs and activities. Seventy-five percent of freshmen go there with a strong interest and involvement in the arts.
● The Application Process
International admissions officers advise students to apply to at least three schools. You may be able to apply online and pay the application charge with a credit card, or by mail. You should study the websites of schools to find information about how and when to apply, how much it will cost and whether any financial aid is available.
● Get a Student Card
If you request a visa for the first time, you will have to go to an American embassy or consulate(领事馆). You will need to bring a government form sent to you by your American school that shows you have been accepted. A consular official will also take your picture and your fingerprints. You will also need banking and tax records that show you have enough money to pay for your education.
● Financial Aid
American schools provide aid, like scholarships, fellowships, to almost half of foreign graduate students, but only ten percent of undergraduates. But grants, which, unlike a loan, does not have to be paid.
【1】It can be inferred from the passage that American colleges and universities .

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Chloe, a kind and hardworking girl, lived in the small village with her parents. Being an only child, she often felt lonely. Even at school she did not have a best friend. She was quite shy and often too afraid to talk to her classmates. After school she returned home and played with her young dog. She wished she had friends like other girls.
When the reopened at the beginning of the term, Chloe got ready for the school and slung (悬挂) her backpack on her shoulder. “Bye. Mum,” she called out, stepped out of her house and walked to school.
As she was walking, a girl of about the same age as her ran past. She was running so fast that her bag was swinging from side to side. “That girl must be in a hurry,” Chloe thought. The she remembered that on the first day of school there would be an assembly (大会) in the morning. She quickened her steps.
Suddenly, Chloe heard a scream. She ran ahead and saw that the girl who had ran past her just then had tripped on a stone and fallen. “Are you OK?” asked Chloe with concern.
The girl looked up. Chloe saw that she was crying, and there was a deep cut on her knee from which blood was oozing (流出). “Thank you. I am OK,” said the girl, though it was clear that she was in pain.
“What’s your name?” asked Chloe. ‘I am Minnie,” said the wounded girl. “Minnie,” Chloe said softly, “your knee is bleeding. Come, I will take you home.” “It’s Ok. I will be all right. You’d better hurry, since today there is an assembly at school,” Minnie said, trying to get up.
