21、 A substitute teacher crunch has forced Chicago area school districts to raise sub pay, to use parents as subs and even to seek out teachers from moonlighting police and fire department ranks. The crunch also means good subs are getting harder to find, some say. “It’s not only a quantity problem but a quality problem,” said Barbara Radner, director of DePaul University’s Center for Urban Education, which serves as expert partner to 31 academically troubled Chicago public schools. “We’re getting to the bottom of the talent pool and it’s empty,” she said. And a bad sub, Radner explained, can move a class backward by confusing students.
Radner said Chicago’s sub shortage is at “crisis” levels and the worst she’s seen in 15 years, although city school officials say West Side schools seem to be affected the most. Using the Chicago system’s substitute teacher center is like engaging in “Russian roulette”, Radner said. “Every sixth sub you get could be a total blowup.” Increasingly, she said, principals in schools she works with say they can’t get subs, or the subs they get leave midday because they can’t handle the job. Chicago school officials are recruiting police officers and firefighters to sub in high-crime areas that some subs refuse to enter. A sub recruitment push is also planned on college campuses - among graduate and doctoral students who may find the part-time work attractive, Schools Chief Executive Officer Paul Vallas said.
Teachers often leave detailed lesson plans for subs if they know in advance they will be off, and keep “emergency plans” on file for unexpected absences, such as an illness. But Radner said emergency plans can amount to “a recipe for baby-sitter.” Carolyn Martin said her daughter’s last sub at Bolingbrook’s Tibbott Elementary in Valley View District 365 was so unpleasant that she may demand to sit in the classroom next time there’s a problem sub. “The last time they had a sub, the substitute teacher had to call the principal into the room,” Martin said, “This is a third-grade classroom, and the lady couldn’t even handle it”.
Demand for subs is high because of several factors, school officials say. For starters, those who hold sub certificate may not be using them because they have found better-paying jobs in today’s booming economy. Six or seven years age, Schaumburg District 54 Associate Supt. Kenneth Cull said, “I used to have 30 real estate agents sign up for sub work because they had college degrees and business was slow. I don’t have that anymore.” Sub pools have been further consumed by several waves of early teacher retirements and increased student enrollments — both of which have meant more subs are being hired as full-time teachers.
【1】What is troubling the Chicago school districts?

D.Many teachers retire earlier from their positions than they should.
22、 India has the world’s worst air pollution. Home to 21 of the world’s 30 most polluted cities, its poisonous air kills more than one million people each year. That’s partly because the South Asian nation is the world’s second largest brick producer. Brick kilns(砖窑)— which account for 20% of black carbon emissions globally—make a significant contribution to its terrible air.
Indian architect Tejas Sidnal was shocked to discover the construction industry’s role in the pollution crisis. “That was a crazy eye opener,”he says, “As architects, we should take responsibility for so much air pollution.”Determined to make construction more sustainable and tackle India’s air pollution, Sidnal launched Carbon Craft Des2019. “We found a way to add value to this recovered carbon by using it as a pigment (颜料,色素)in carbon tiles(瓷砖,瓦片),”he says.
To create the carbon tiles, Carbon Craft Design partnered with Graviky Labs, an Indian company that previously created “Air Ink”, a technology that captures carbon soot from cars and factories, and converts it into ink and paint.” Graviky Labs views pollution as a resource,” company founder Anirudh Sharma tells CNN. “We are one of only a few companies in the world to capture these carbon emissions and turn them into new materials.”
Since launching its first tiles a year ago, Carbon Craft Design’s customers have included global fashion brands and architecture firms in India. In November 2020, the company retrofitted an Adidas store in Mumbai, covering the walls and the floor with its carbon tiles. Architect Manan Gala, whose firm Bombay Contractors designed the Adidas store, describes the carbon tile as a “winner” for the construction industry. “As well as being sustainable, the product has better strength than conventional cement tiles due to the carbon content, and the raw and rustic feel adds to the overall charm,” he says.
“Carbon Craft Design is currently rising investment and hopes to start distribution in Europe this year.” says Sidnal, adding that “We are flooded with inquiries from in and out of India.”
【1】What does the author want to tell us by the figures in paragraph 1?

A.He cares about crises. B.He prefers profits.
C.He’s a responsible architect. D.He’s crazy about construction.
【3】What can we learn from paragraph 3 and paragraph 4?
A.Carbon tiles are stronger than traditional cement tiles.
B.“Air Ink” was specially created to produce carbon tiles.
C.Global fashion brands and architecture firms join Graviky Labs.
D.Many companies can transform carbon emissions into new materials.
【4】What is Sidnal’s attitude towards “Carbon Craft Design”?

23、Scientists have invented a new type of battery that makes it possible to charge electric vehicles in less than 10 minutes. The innovative design for lithiumion (锂离子) batteries involves a record-breaking combination of shorter charge time and more energy acquired for longer travel range, according to the Penn State University researchers who came up with it.
“The need for smaller, faster-charging batteries is greater than ever,” said Professor Chaoyang Wang from Penn State University, who led the research. “There are simply not enough batteries and critical raw materials, especially those produced domestically, to meet expected demand.”
The fast-charging technology makes it possible for electric vehicles to downsize from 150 to 50 kWh without shortening range, making them cheaper and more efficient. “The smaller, faster-charging batteries will dramatically cut down battery cost and usage of critical raw materials, such as cobalt, graphite and lithium, enabling mass adoption of affordable electric cars,” said Professor Wang.
The breakthrough centres on a novel method for controlling the temperature of the battery, which is needed to optimise its charge time and performance. Until now, this has involved external heating and cooling systems that are inefficient and waste energy.
Regular batteries have three components—an anode, an electrolyte and a cathode—but the fast-charging system adds a fourth that builds in the temperature control system. An ultrathin layer of nickel (超薄镍层) acts as a stimulus to control the battery’s temperature, allowing for 10-minute fast charging for electric cars.
“True fast-charging batteries would have immediate impact,” the researchers noted, “Since there are not enough raw materials for every internal combustion (燃烧) engine car to be replaced by a 150 kWh-equipped EV, fast charging is vital for EVs to go mainstream and become accessible to the public.”
【1】What is the main feature of the innovative battery?
A.Longer travel range.
B.Wider recyclable use.
C.Shortened charge time.
D.More energy consumed.
【2】What does “this” refer to in paragraph 4?
A.The battery’s charge time
B.The breakthrough in batteries.
C.The battery’s performance
D.The method of temperature control.

A.To explain a reason.
B.To give instructions.
C.To make comparison.
D.To highlight an opinion.
【4】What do the researchers’ words imply in the last paragraph?
A.Electric vehicles depend greatly on raw materials.
B.The fast-charging batteries have a promising future.
C.The 150 kWh-equipped EVs are bound to go mainstream.
D.Internal combustion engine cars will eventually be replaced.
