二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、How to improve our life? Many people think that they have to accept whatever life throws at them. They’ll say, “This is my destiny(命运). I cannot change it.”

Of course not! You don’t have to suffer needlessly. Your life depends on you, not on other factors.

I know a woman who says she just accepts what life gives her because she has done everything she can to improve it. Guess what her lifestyle is? She wakes up in the morning, goes to work, comes back home, relaxes, chats with people, watches TV, and then goes to sleep. Next day, the same routine cycle follows.

Huh! Is this what she calls “doing her best”? She believes she has tried her best and just accepts it in her heart that this is the life that has been intended for her and that her luck can only change if God wills it. She hasn’t realized that we have to do our share of making the effort to live the life of our dreams.

Remember that you harvest what you sow. You have to get off the sofa, get your eyes off the TV screen, get your hands off the phone (unless it’s helpful to your success), and get your mind and body to work! Don’t expect your luck to change, unless you do something about it. If something goes wrong, don’t just regard it as a temporary(暂时的) problem; Instead, learn your lesson, make the most of the situation, and do something to solve the problem. It’s not enough to think positively; you also have to act positively.

If someone’s life is in trouble, do you just hope and pray that things will turn out fine? Of course not! You get to do anything you can to save the person. So it is with your own life. It is not enough to hope for the best, but you have to do your best. In other words, don’t just stand (or sit) there, do something to improve your life.

【1】According to the woman mentioned in Para.3, her life________.

    A. doesn’t need improving

    B. couldn’t be improved

    C. will be better some day

    D. will be worse in the future

【2】What does the author think of the woman’s life?

    A. Positive.  B. Passive.

    C. Disturbing.  D. Colorful.

【3】In Para.5, the author emphasized the importance of ________.

    A. positive action   B. positive thinking

    C. hope for the best   D. intention to succeed

【4】The text is mainly written to advise you to _________.

    A. understand yourself  B. believe in yourself

    C. improve your life D. change your normal way

  • 22、If you’re a fan of fast fashion, your choices may become fewer in the near future.

At the end of 2020, fast-fashion giant H&M said it would close 350 stores worldwide. Recently, Spanish fashion giant Inditex said that it would close all its Bershka, Pull & Bear and Stradivarius stores in China. It all indicates that fast fashion is slowing down, said the website Fast Company.

A major reason is the change in the attitude of consumers. Millennials, those who were born in the 1980s or 1990s, are now the largest consumer group. Unlike their predecessors (前人), millennials are more financially stable, and thus low-priced fast fashion is not their first choice. According to The South China Morning Post, more people are starting to care about quality and the stories behind a product.

Another factor is the growing concern over the fashion industry’s effect on the environment. As The New York Times mentioned, the fashion industry is one of the largest polluters of clean water and three-fifths of clothes produced in a year end up in landfills (垃圾场). As there is more awareness of the climate problems, younger people are preferring more eco-friendly choices.

Molly, 22, is one of them. Before she went to college, she used to frequent fast-fashion shops like Forever 21 and H&M. But after taking a class that focused on the environmental influence of clothing production, her preference changed.

Now, she tries to shop in a way that is both sustainable (可持续的) and affordable: She shops second-hand. “My friend showed me how easy it was to be thrifty (节约的), and I developed a new personal style that focused less on fashions but on basics that don’t go out of style,” she told MTV News.

In order to survive in the competitive market, many fast-fashion brands are making changes as well. For example, Inditex said that the company plans for all of its clothes to be sustainable by 2025.

“Sustainability is a never-ending task in which everyone here is involved,” said Pablo Isla, CEO of Inditex.

【1】Why is fast fashion unpopular among millennials?

    A.Millennials follow predecessors’ style.

B.Millennials pay more attention to quality.

    C.Millennials prefer cheaper clothes.

D.Millennials like products with a long history.

【2】What is Molly’s new way of shopping?

    A.She likes thrifty brands.

    B.She prefers fashionable clothes.

    C.She buys used clothes.

    D.She buys only necessary clothes.

【3】The author used the example of Inditex at the end to show _______.

A.how a major company can change their products to fit the market

B.how sustainability has become the top choice for most fashion companies

C.how the fast-fashion industry is suffering a big loss

D.how competition is becoming more violent in the fashion industry

【4】This passage most probably comes from________ .

    A.a storybook

    B.a science report

    C.a textbook

    D.a newspaper

  • 23、   The rapid growth in skyscrapers worldwide, most of which have large windows, has led to a high demand for window washers. Though the job is well-paid, it is dangerous and accidents are not uncommon. However, if Israel-based start-up Skyline Technologies has its way, the dangerous job may soon be done by Ozmo, an intelligent window cleaning robot, with humans supervising (监督) from the safety of the ground.

Much like humans, Ozmo, sitting on platforms hanging from the buildings, uses its arms and brushes to clean the dirt on the glass. A 3D map of the building’s surface programmed into its system allows the robot to skillfully deal with any obstacle it is likely to meet, as it moves up and down the buildings. The robot will self-correct and move around every obstacle that it might have met so as not to break a window.

Unlike present window washers, the robot cleaner does not require soap to clean the glass. Instead, it uses distilled (蒸馏的) water to do the job. Yaron Schwarcz, CEO of Skyline Robotics explains, “We are environmentally friendly.”

Ozmo is also expected to be much more efficient than its human counterparts. While it presently takes three cleaners 480 hours each to clean windows of a 40-storey glass building, the robot will be able to do it in 80 hours. However, unlike other robots, Ozmo will not replace human workers, and only make their jobs safer by making them supervisors, who will be controlling the operation from the safety of the ground.

Whether Ozmo, which is still being tested, does as good a job as humans remains to be seen. If things go well, its creators have much bigger ambitions for Ozmo. Schwarcz told Forbes Magazine, “Window cleaning is just the tip of the iceberg. We plan to replace all tasks that are dangerous and dirty.”

1Why is Ozmo friendly to our environment?

A.It uses less soap than other robots.

    B.It depends on solar energy.

C.It makes our ecosystem more balanced.

D.It consumes nothing made from chemicals.

2What can we infer from the passage?

A.Like cleaning windows, a well-paid job is usually dangerous.

B.Without humans supervising, Ozmo could have performed better.

C.Ozmo can save 400 hours per building compared to a human cleaner.

D.Ozmo can’t be stopped by obstacles with its advanced system.

3What does the underlined part “the tip of the iceberg” mean?

A.A small part of a big plan.

    B.As cool as the iceberg.

    C.The most advanced technology.

D.The leading role in the modern world.

4What is the best title for the text

    A.Robots make a difference.

B.Meet Ozmo, the window cleaning robot.

    C.Supervise Ozmo, human safe.

    D.Intelligent Ozmo becomes known worldwide.

  • 24、Hibernation

For people who aren’t fans of winter, animals that hibernate seem to have the right idea: It’s the equivalent of burying your head under the covers until spring comes — isn't it? Not quite.

“Most of the physiological functions are extremely slowed down,” says Marina Blanco, a postdoctoral associate at the Duke Lemur (狐猴) Center in Durham, North Carolina. For example, when lemurs hibernate, they reduce their heart rates from over 300 beats per minute to fewer than six, says Blanco. And instead of breathing about every second, they can go up to 10 minutes without taking a breath. Their brain activity “becomes undetectable.” This is very different from sleep, which is gentle resting state where unconscious functions are still performed.

Put simply: “Hibernation is a means of energy conservation,” says Kelly Drew, a neuropharmacologist  at the University of Alaska Fairbanks who studies the brain chemistry of hibernating Arctic ground squirrels. While hibernation is often seen as a seasonal behavior, it’s not limited to cold-weather animals. There are tropical hibernators that may do so to beat the heat. And “some species hibernate in response to food shortages,” notes Drew. For example, echidnas ( ) in Australia will hibernate after fires, waiting until food resources rebound to resume normal activities.

To slow their metabolism (新陈代谢), animals cool their bodies by 5 to 10 °C on average. The Arctic ground squirrels Drew works on can take this much further, supercooling to subfreezing temperatures. Drew’s research has shown that cooling is likely regulated by levels of adenosine (腺苷) in the brain. Not only does adenosine increase in winter in ground squirrels, the receptors for the molecule become more sensitive to it.

But species don’t stay in their cold, sleeping state for the duration of their dormant period. About 80 percent of their energy is spent intermittently (间歇地) waking and warming up. Why they do this is “one of the greatest mysteries” of the field, says Thomas Ruf, a professor of animal physiology at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna. Some think they need to turn back on their immune systems to fight disease, while others think they may simply awaken so they can sleep.

One bird and a variety of amphibians(两栖动物), reptiles and insects also exhibit hibernation-like states. There is even at least one fish — the Antarctic cod — that slows down its metabolism in winter, becoming  20 times less active. And, of course, there are lots of mammals. While bears might be the first that come to mind, most mammalian hibernators are on the smaller side. “The average hibernator weighs only 70 grams,” says Ruf. That’s because little bodies have high surface area to volume ratios, making it more taxing for  them to stay warm in cold weather — so they need the seasonal energy savings more than larger animals.

1How does the author distinguish between hibernation and sleep?

A.By highlighting reasons. B.By presenting definitions.

C.By introducing arguments. D.By comparing the data.

2“Echidnas” in Paragraph 3 is introduced to show ______.

A.animals cool their bodies by 5 to 10°C on average

B.tropical hibernators may hibernate to beat the heat

C.some species hibernate in response to food shortage

D.hibernation is most often seen as a seasonal behavior

3The last paragraph mainly discusses ______.

A.when certain animals hibernate B.what kinds of animals hibernate

C.why some animals hibernate D.how animals hibernate

    4The passage implies that ______.

A.It is harder for smaller animals to keep warm in winter.

B.The cooling of bodies may influence the levels of adenosine.

C.Scientists don’t agree on the reasons of intermittent hibernation.

D.Body functions are still unconsciously performed during hibernation.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

While contact between adolescents(between the ages of fifteen and nineteen) and their peers(同龄人) is universal characteristic of all cultures the nature and the degree of such contact vary a great deal. In American contemporary society adolescents spend much more time with their peers than with younger children or adults.

This pattern of age segregation(隔离) in American society did not become usual until the beginning of the industrialized society. Changes in the workplace separated children from adults with adults working and children attending school. The dramatic increase of mothers in the workplace has further contributed to the reduction in the amount of time adolescents spend with adults.

School reform efforts during the nineteenth century which resulted in age-segregated schools and grades have reduced the amount of time adolescents spend with younger children.

Finally the changes in population are considered a factor that may have contributed to the emergence of adolescent peer culture. From 1955 to 1975 the adolescent population increased dramatically from 11 percent to 20 percent. This increase in the number of adolescents might be a contributing factor to the increase in adolescent peer culture in terms of growth in size as well as in terms of its impact on society's other cultures(adults younger children).

Research supports the view that adolescents spend a great deal of time with their peers. Reed Larson and his colleagues examined adolescents’daily activities and found that they spend more time talking to their friends than engaging in any other activity. In typical week high school students will spend twice as much time with their peers as with adults. This gradual withdrawal from adults begins in early adolescence. In sixth grade adults excluding parents account for only 25 percent of adolescent social networks. Another important characteristic of adolescent peer culture is its increasingly autonomous(自治的) function. While childhood peer groups are conducted under the close supervision of parents adolescent peer groups typically make an effort to escape adult supervision and usually succeed in doing so.
