二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、I remember the day when I first learned to ride a bike. It was a frightening, yet fun experience. My grandfather was the one who taught me and he helped me when I got hurt. The first time I got on a bike, I had no idea what I was doing, and just about everything went wrong. My grandfather told me to just put my feet on the pedals(脚蹬子) and start cycling. He also told me he would hold onto the back of the bike the whole time, yet he didn't.

As soon as I started trying to balance myself, he let the bike go. I happened to look back just then. I was scared to death that I was going to fall and hurt myself. When I was scared, my mind went blank from cycling, and I just wanted off. I forgot how to use the brakes(车闸) and fell right off the bike. My grandfather kept encouraging me to get up and try again, and after about 15 minutes, I finally stopped crying, got up and tried again.

As soon as I started riding again, my pants got caught in the chain, and I fell flat on my face and hit my nose. My grandfather decided to call it a day and try again the next morning. The next morning I woke up brightly and early, and was very eager to try to ride my bike. My nose felt better, so I wasn't that afraid of falling anymore.

Despite the fact that I knew there were a range of difficulties on the way to mastering the skills in riding a bike, I believed I could do well with my grandfather's help. After all, riding a bike was indeed what I wanted to do eagerly.

  • 22、   The New Year is always a time of new beginnings, a time for a change, and a time to set goals.1 Here are some tips for setting career goals in a new year:

    Reflect on Your Year

Take some time to consider your career in the year that just ended. If you dislike your job, try to figure out why. Is it due to the work itself, or something about the workplace? If you like what you do, and it’s outside factors that you find limiting, it might make sense to make your goal to find a new position. 2

    Engage in Career Research

3Start to read about careers of interest by browsing websites or publications at your local bookstore or library. Identify two new careers to research each week, and keep a diary of your interest in each. For those fields with a genuine appeal, make a list of questions to research so that you can fully evaluate the suitability of that career for you.

Check Out What Your Friends Do

4 Think about the roles of colleagues, suppliers, or clients that might be a good fit for you, and interview them about the nature of their work. Share your skills list with them, and ask for help brainstorming career options that might be worth considering within their sections.

    Gain New Skills

If you want to take up a new career, consider volunteering to gain additional experience, or taking classes to learn new skills.5

A.Always be ready to learn and aim to be better.

B.Activate your curiosity about the work lives of people in your social network.

C.If you are totally in love with what you do, aim higher, and strive to be better.

D.Spend some time assessing what you like and dislike about your current situation.

E.Many people look forward to changing career paths and aiming for bigger dreams.

F.The more you research, the easier it will be to make decisions and set goals for yourself.

G.The same holds true if you feel positive about your field, but are ready for more significant responsibilities.

  • 24、Howard Weistling wanted to be a comic strip (连环漫画) artist. But when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, he joined the Army.

After flight engineer training, Howard was shipped off to Europe. On his first flight, his plane was shot down over Austria. The entire crew of eight men landed safely. But a farmer found Howard hiding in his barn and turned him over to a prison of war camp in Barth, Germany. It was freezing and the men almost starved to death eating the guards’ garbage.

Hungry and homesick Howard dealt in the only way he knew how. He drew a comic strip. The book, made of cigarette wrappers bound together with scrap metal (废旧金属), was sent around the camp. Every couple of days he would add a new panel (小组). One panel at a time would be passed around the whole camp. And they’d have something to look forward to.

After an entire year of this, they woke one morning to find their guards gone. They fled and Howard finally got to go home. Just lucky to get out alive, he left the book behind.

Back home in California, Howard soon had a wife and kids to feed so he had to set aside his dream of becoming an artist. He took a job as a gardener instead.

Morgan shared his father’s artistic gifts. At 15 his parents sent him to art school. And Howard got to see his son become a well-known painter before he died in 2002. That’s how, seven decades after the war, when a stranger in New York googled the name “Weistling,” he found Morgan online.

“I get an email from a gentleman and he says, ‘I think I may have some drawings your father did when he was a POW (prisoner of war) in World War II,’” Morgan recalls. “‘Would you like them?’ And I just stared at that email and started crying.”

Luckily Howard had engraved (雕刻) his name on the comic book, which is how the man from New York City had connected with Morgan. A couple of days later when it arrived in California, Morgan couldn’t believe it. “It was like getting my father back,” Morgan says. “It was like him being able to tell me the story over again — only this time it was real in my hands.”

【1】Why does the text detail Howard’s life as a POW?

A.To express war cannot stop his pursuit of success.

B.To show that passion for art helped ease his sufferings.

C.To prove that loss of freedom encouraged his creativity.

D.To tell us sufferings drive him to fight against his fate.

【2】What can we infer about Howard’s comic strip in prison?

    A.It satisfied prisoners’ curiosity.

    B.It aroused the guards’ sympathy.

C.It was popular among the prisoners.

D.It raised prisoners’ confidence in freedom.

【3】What contributes to the stranger’s success in finding Morgan?

    A.The email from a gentleman.

    B.Howard’s experience in the war.

    C.Morgan’s recalling of his father.

D.Morgan’s status in the field of art.

【4】What can we infer about Morgan from the last paragraph?

    A.He didn’t believe the stranger’s story.

B.He was excited to get the comic strip.

C.He couldn’t wait to tell others his good news.

D.He hadn’t heard about his father’s war stories.
