二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、If someone said they’d pay you $1,800 to stay off social media for six years, would you do it? Could you? Sivert Klefsaas did just that.

In 2016, Lorna Goldstrand Klefsaas challenged her 12-year-old son Sivert to stay off social media until he was 18. If he completed the challenge, she’d award him the cash on his eighteenth birthday. On February 19, 2022, Sivert claimed his prize.

Lorna once listened to a radio program called the “16 for 16”, where a mother gave her daughter $1,600 when she turned 16 if she stayed off social media. She decided to up the ante (提价) to two extra years and $200 more.

Sivert said it wasn’t too difficult to live without social media, and he didn’t think about it much during the six years. As a 12-year-old, Sivert said he wasn’t using social media much anyway. “I got to avoid all the unnecessary drama that was on there,” Sivert said. Lorna said she never had to check for any sneakily (偷偷地) downloaded apps. “He’s so competitive; it was definitely more for proving a point,” she said. “It also meant he had more time to focus on his grades and sports instead.”

After Sivert’s success, Lorna took to Facebook to share the challenge. She said it was some of the best money she ever spent. Other parents have seemed interested in trying it out too.

“We are certainly not against social media, but it’s the healthy using of it,” Lona noted. “It’s about not letting yourself get weighed down by (被……拖累) it, or addicted to it, or affected by things that people post.”

Sivert is the youngest of four children, and his three older sisters all used social media growing up. Lorna said there were times she felt her daughters “got too engrossed (沉迷的)” in their apps and feeds. “Social media was affecting their mood, their friendships and was kind of a depressant (镇静剂),” she said. When one of her daughters was 16, Lorna took away her phone because of it. Lorna says her daughter later thanked her for doing so, as it improved her mood.

【1】How did Lorna get the idea of challenging her son to stay off social media?

A.Her son was heavily addicted to the Internet.

B.She was inspired by a radio program.

C.Her son failed to focus on his grades.

D.Her son was affected by things that people posted.

【2】Why did Lorna refuse to check for sneakily downloaded apps?

A.Because her son had difficulty in using social media.

B.Because she was unwilling to affect her son’s mood.

C.Because she had confidence in her son.

D.Because her son had no interest in the latest trends.

【3】What was the reaction of other parents to Lorna’s action?

A.They thought it was worth promoting.

B.They tended to follow her example.

C.They expressed their disagreement with her.

D.They thought it was too challenging.

【4】What does the last paragraph indicate?

A.Social media is a great way to establish friendships.

B.Social media helps young people improve their mood.

C.Lorna’s daughter benefits greatly from social media.

D.Social media has a negative influence on teenagers.

  • 22、In early 2018, I was training for the London Marathon—the first and only marathon I would ever run in my life. I had treated myself to an expensive fitness watch that tracked my time, pace and splits.

At the end of my final training run—an exhausting 21 miles (34km) —I threw myself down on the floor the moment I got home, only to see my watch had failed me. Twenty-one miles briefly flashed on the screen before it went blank and disappeared for ever. I screamed in pain. That tragic image of me crying on my living room floor pretty much sums up my relationship with exercise tracking technology.

It can be a total joy to watch your data change on running apps as you get stronger and faster. I once got a kick out of it, but at some point it became a stick I used to punish myself. I would watch my pace, compare it with other people’s or criticize myself for not doing it 30 seconds faster. I never really recognized exercise tracking as a problem. It seemed to me that tracking was the route to self-improvement, and the point was to improve, wasn’t it? The point was to be better.

In the past year, the concept of “being better” has taken on a different meaning. My mental health dropped, and things that were once easy such as brushing my teeth became unimaginably difficult. Being better stopped meaning getting faster or stronger. It meant taking care of myself and feeling some joy in a day. Once I started getting better, I reflected on what in my life made me happy and what did not. So, I stopped tracking my runs and simply deleted years’ worth of data that was once very important to me and now meant nothing.

What has become very clear to me since I quit tracking my runs is that I genuinely love doing them. I run around my local park with a silly little smile on my face. I love it so much. But I do not love running quickly. I do not like races. I do not want to be pushed to be faster. Things I notice about my runs now include: how my legs feel and how my mind feels afterwards-clear and focused. I notice dogs, the smell of the wild plants along the canal and the sunshine (OK, wind and rain) on my face.

I am better. Or sometimes I am worse. But either way I’m slowly plodding along, and that’s good enough.

【1】The author cried after the final training run because she ________.

    A.had to stop working out

    B.became physically worn out

C.lost the data on the watch

D.felt a sharp pain in the legs

【2】The author used to view exercise tracking as ________.

    A.a fun hobby for enjoyment

    B.a strong need for recognition

    C.a method of escaping punishment

D.a way of being a better runner

【3】What does “being better” mean to the author now?

A.Getting pleasure out of winning races.

B.Being more focused on her life goal.

    C.Freeing herself from demanding tasks.

    D.Improving her overall well-being.

【4】What can we conclude from this passage?

    A.Adjustment brings happiness.

B.Passion is the key to success.

    C.Sports contribute to happiness.

    D.Success equals self-improvement.

  • 23、   Every day is Earth Day — probably you’ve heard it before. Nearly all Americans have access to a plastic recycling program. You may be surprised to learn how many types of plastic packaging can be recycled into new, useful products!

Ford Motor Company has been helping to promote the use of environmentally-friendly auto parts — and one way they’re doing that is by using recycled plastic bottles for underbody shields (底盘保护罩) and other auto parts on cars.

“The underbody shield is a large part, and for a part that big, if we use solid plastic, it would likely weigh three times as much,” said Thomas Sweder, a design engineer of Ford Motor Company. “We look for the most durable and highest performing materials to work with to make our parts, and in this case, we are also creating many environmental benefits.”

In the past decade, the global use of plastics in vehicle parts has grown quickly. Ford alone uses about 1.2 billion recycled plastic bottles per year, about 250 bottles per vehicle on average.

When plastic bottles are thrown into a recycling bin, they are collected with thousands of others and cut into small pieces. These pieces are typically sold to suppliers who turn them into fibers, by melting and pressing them. Then they are mixed together with other various types of fiber in a process and used to make a sheet of material which is formed into the auto parts.

Due to its light weight, recycled plastic is ideal for the manufacturing of underbody shields. These shields reportedly also help create a significantly quieter environment on the new 2020 Ford Escape.

This is not the only way that Ford has been committed to environmental protection; the automotive company recently partnered with McDonald’s coffee suppliers to recycle all of their coffee roasting biowaste into headlights.

“Ford is among the leaders when it comes to using recycled materials such as this,” Sweder said. “This material meets all of our requirements for durability and performance.”

1Why does Ford choose recycled plastic as environmentally-friendly materials for vehicle parts?

A.Because it’s new and useful. B.Because it’s cheap and easy to get.

    C.Because it’s durable and light. D.Because it’s portable and well-performed.

2What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about?

A.The global use of plastics. B.The mixing process of fibers.

C.The advantages of plastic bottles. D.The formation of the new auto material.

3What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 7 refer to?

A.Recycling coffee roasting biowaste. B.Improving vehicle parts.

C.Recycling plastic bottles into auto parts. D.Creating a quieter environment.

4What can be the best title of the passage?

    A.Every Day is Earth Day

B.Ford Takes the Lead in Plastic Recycling

    C.Ecological Auto Underbody Shields

D.A Pioneer in Promoting Environmental Protection

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

At the beginning of this year, my daughter Helen spent a month in the hospital fighting for her life. Since then, she has had to deal with the disease as well as many side effects. She has met each challenge, disappointment and setback with courage.

With her 16th birthday approaching, Helen dreamt of a party and campfire at the beach with friends, relatives, and her beloved dog, Ginger. It took a while, but I finally found a good beach that allowed dogs and campfires and had easy access. However, a week before her party, Helen’s disease worsened.

Our friend Ian called the night before the party and turned our plans upside down. The small beach we’d selected and the surrounding beaches would host a 30, 000-person event on the party night and would be closed. It was a disaster because we had researched no other nearby beach would work.

Helen had her heart set on having her dog and a campfire at the beach, but as usual, she didn’t complain. In her young life, she’s dealt with much worse things than a destroyed birthday party. She sat down and began to quietly cry. After a while Helen decided she’d rather have the party at our home so she could have her dog and a campfire. We called the invitees with the changed plans.

How to design a party at home with dogs and campfire was a challenge. It occurred to us that we could make full use of our yard. Ian’s wife Jayme came first with some small signs, which read: “Welcome to Campbell Beach, where dogs and campfires are welcome. Where the beach is small and the waves are so far away, you must close your eyes to see them, but not so the love for Helen and her little dog. Happy Birthday, Helen!”

    注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

An hour later, Ian arrived with a loaded truck.
