21、The African elephant, which is the largest land animal remaining on earth, is of great importance to African ecosystem. Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the- forest-and-savanna (大草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat.
It is the elephant's great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and under-bushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.
Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well.
What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly
changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.

22、 US News & World Report recently ranked the best countries for adventure, based on each country’s scores across four aspefcts: fun, friendliness, climate and scenery. Here are four of them.
Spain
With its sky-high scores in friendliness and fun, adventure in Spain is always as close as the nearest street. The most important thing for you is to identify what kind of adventure suits you best: if you love winter, head for Madrid, while warm-weather lovers are better off in beachfront Barcelona.
Thailand
Combining high scores in both scenery and fun, Thailand attracts a mix of people that make for an adventurous atmosphere. This can best be experienced on the island of Koh Phangan. Visitors looking for more traditional exciting adventure should head to Chiang Mai to try whitewater rafting(漂流), or attempt waterfall abseiling(沿绳索滑下) at Doi Inthanon National Park.

High scores in scenery and climate make Greece a perfect destination for adventurers. The water for swimming here is the best of the best. Sailing and kayaking around the Cyclades are popular water sports while land-living visitors to the islands have abundant hiking options. Host to the first Olympics, Athens has long held sporting events at the Panathenaic Stadium. Visitors are welcome to join the morning jog in the stadium from 7: 30 am to 9: 00 am as a warm-up for the day’s adventures.
Italy
While Italy might be best known for its food, art and architecture, the country has a more actively adventurous side, too. In Sicily, you can swim in the deepest blue sea and after a few hours lie on the top of the highest active volcano in Europe The ever-changing landscape(风景) also provides a chance for different types of adventures.

23、Overheating is a serious issue for birds flying long distances, and paler feathers that reflect more of the sun's heat may be one of the ways they cope.
The latest study of nearly all of the 10000 or so bird species has found that the farther birds migrate (迁徙), the paler their feathers tend to be. This is probably because it helps birds flying in sunlight to keep cool, says Kaspar Delhey at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Seewiesen, Germany. “Feather colour is extremely diverse and many factors can drive the evolution of colours, of which migration is only one.”
Several recent studies suggest that overheating is more of a problem for birds flying long distances than previously thought. For instance, sensors have shown that the body heat of migrating eider ducks can rise so high that they have to stop flying.
Another study found that some migrating birds fly much higher during the day than they do at night, despite having to spend more energy staying high in thinner air. This suggests that the heat of the sun makes them much more likely to overheat, and made Delhey and his colleagues wonder whether migrating birds have lighter feathers to help them cope.
The researchers used photos from the Handbook of the Birds of the World to rate the lightness of birds' feathers from 0 to 100, treating males and females as separate species because colour is so often different between the sexes. They found that short-distance migrants were significantly lighter than birds that didn't migrate, and long-distance migrants were significantly lighter than short-distance migrants, even without taking into account factors such as body size or the environmental conditions where birds live.
One possible result of the phenomenon is that migrating birds are going to find it even harder to stay cool as the planet heats up. Rising temperatures may force darker species to fly only during the night while migrating, says Dellhey, or to fly even higher during the day. These responses will probably involve costs, which may reduce individual survival, with potential negative consequences at the population level, he says.
【1】What is a problem for birds flying long distances?
A.Their feathers drop off.
B.They get lost due to the sun.
C.Their bodies become too hot.
D.They fly farther to spend the winter.
【2】What has the latest study found?
A.Migrating birds usually fly at night to avoid strong sunlight.
B.Birds have to stop flying often when migrating to have a rest.
C.The longer distance the birds migrate, the lighter their feathers become.
D.The feather colour of birds is extremely diverse and many factors can drive it.
【3】Why do some birds fly higher during the day?
A.To save energy.
B.To cool themselves.
C.To breathe fresh air.
D.To escape from enemies.
【4】What is a potential cost that dark birds pay to fly higher or only at night?
A.They may decline in population.
B.They may have smaller bodies.
C.They may fail to migrate.
D.They may take longer to migrate.
24、Soaping up your hands may do more than just get rid of germs. It may wash away the inner confusion you feel right after being forced to make a choice between two appealing choices, according to a new study. The study builds on past research into a phenomenon known as “the Macbeth effect”.
It turns out that Shakespeare was really onto something when he imagined lady Macbeth trying to clean her conscience(良心)by rubbing invisible bloodstains from her hands. A few years ago, scientists asked people to describe a past wrong act. If people were then given a chance to clean their hands, they later expressed less guilt than people who hadn’t cleaned.
This finding fascinated W. S. Lee, a researcher. “Anything from the past, any kind of negative emotional experiences, might be washed away,” says Lee.
He decided to test hand washing’s effect on one kind of bad feeling: the tension we feel after being forced to choose between two attractive choices, because picking one choice makes us feel that we’ve lose the other. People usually try to calm this inner conflict by later exaggerating(夸大)the positive aspects of their choice.
He had students rank 10 different music CDs. Then he offered students one CD as a gift. Some students then use liquid soap. Others only looked at the soap or sniffed(嗅)it. “Actually, you do not need water and soap,” says Lee.
Later, the students again had to rank all the music. People who didn’t wash their hands had the normal response — they scored their take-home CD higher, suggesting that they now saw it as even more attractive than before. But this wasn’t true for the hand washers. They ranked the music about the same. “they feel no need at all to justify the choice,” say Lee.
But the implications of it just aren’t clear. Schwarz says it’s too soon to know whether people should head for a sink after making a tough choice. He says washing may help decision-makers by cleaning away mental disorder, but perhaps if they don’t go through the usual post-decision process of justifying their choice, they might feel more sorrow in the long run.
【1】The Macbeth effect refers to the fact that ________.
A. Shakespeare did scientific research before writing Macbeth
B. soaping up one’s hand may help wash away the inner confusion and make a decision
C. people feel less guilty by getting rid of invisible germs from their hands

A. they will overstate the goodness of their chosen choice
B. they will feel regretful for not choosing another
C. they will feel free due to the feeling of losing the other choice
D. they will think nothing of their chosen choice any more to calm their inner conflict
【3】According to Lee, the hand washers consider the judgment of choice ________.
A. more scientific B. unnecessary
C. a little convincing D. absolutely useless
【4】What does Schwarz need to research more?
A. Whether people need to justify their choice.
B. Whether people feel more sorrow after washing hands.
C. Whether washing hands help over a long period of time.
D. Whether washing hands is helpful to make a choice.
【5】What might be the most suitable title for the passage?
A. Is Washing Hands Necessary to Defeat Tension?
B. Washing Hands, Washes Our Mind
C. Washing Hands, Helps Make a Better Choice
D. Washing Hands, Reduces the Stress of Decision
