21、 It’s not easy to grow up. Actually it’s far from easy. Growing up can be a real “pain” for some of us. We are always doing things that someone else makes us do and aren’t allowed to do all the things we like. Sometimes we feel trapped, sometimes we are fearful, and sometimes we just don’t understand why we can’t stay young forever. When we look back on all the hardships in life with a positive attitude, we realize that all of our growing pains actually turn into growing gains!
As a young girl my parents forced my sisters and me to do so many things that I never liked. They made me learn to play the violin and then the piano. At that time I hated music, just because it was what they wanted me to do. But looking back now, I am so glad that my parents encouraged me to take music lessons. Music has enriched my life in so many ways. I realize that my parents and teachers were always pushing me along, not because they wanted me to suffer but because they wanted me to succeed in life. They’ve always wanted me to have a better life than they did themselves.
Every moment of our lives we are either living or dying, so live life to its fullest! We are all going to experience growing pains, but they are just small pains in life. They might seem so huge at the time but we must be strong. Think about how we would feel if we had no fear and live life like that. The future is ours!
A little hard work and sweat never hurt anyone! If we realize that these pains are just small bumps (凸块) on our road to success we will realize that our growing pains are actually growing gains!
【1】According to Paragraph 1, we learn that when we are young, ________.
A.life is full of joy B.life is easy for us
C.we know we can stay young forever D.we sometimes can’t do things we like
【2】What does the underlined phrase “to its fullest” mean?
A.Directly. B.Completely.
C.Carefully. D.Terribly.
【3】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Growing pains are necessary for us to grow up.
B.We all have to experience growing pains.
C.A little hard work and sweat are harmful to us.
D.Life without fear is a better choice for us.
22、My elephant adventures began in 1984 when, with our one-year-old daughter, my husband and I crossed the jungle in a jeep, slicking behind a lorry for comfort and company. The elephants standing like watchers on either side of the forest highway had us praying for our safety. One elephant made loud noise and angrily pawed (抓) the ground, warning us off. We raced away before they could attack.
It was wise to keep elephants at a distance. We heard stories of tourists whose jeeps were overturned, and a couple of photographers were killed because they moved too close. Elephants are misleading animals. They give people an impression of being quiet and kind, so tourists think it’s safe to picnic in the jungle (丛林). Yet angry elephants have knocked them down in seconds before they could take off.
Elephants might make life unpredictable and dangerous. It’s difficult for inexperienced environmentalists to even, begin to grasp this reality. I’ve heard city people say “ We humans are encroaching (侵害) on their forests.” But what’s the solution?
When a poor farmer borrows heavily to plant a crop, he’ll do anything to protect it His life depends on it Elephants ruining an about-to-be-harvested com field cannot expect to be welcomed like special guests. The battle between beast and farmer is violent.
Experts are working on solutions to human-elephant conflicts (冲突). Some are sure to fail to like the plans to build electric fences around human settlements. Elephants rapidly figure them out and come in, around and over them.
There are more questions than answers, for sure. But as my husband said, “More people die in car accidents every single day, in every city on the earth. But they won’t take cars off the roads, will they?” So we need to seek practical ways of preventing elephant accidents.
【1】What is the writer’s purpose in writing Paragraph 1?
A.To tell readers her family’s experience of elephant adventure.
B.To show readers elephants are angry and dangerous,
C.To introduce the topic of the whole passage.
D.To describe how her family keep away from elephants.
【2】Why do tourists think it is safe to picnic in the jungle?
A.They think elephants are quiet and kind.
B.They haven’t heard the stories of elephant killing people.
C.They like elephants too much.
D.They think they can race away in seconds.
【3】What docs a poor farmer do to protect his crop?
A.Welcome elephant like special guests.
B.Fight with elephants for his harvest.
C.Stop planting crops.
D.Depend on elephants for his life.
【4】What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A.It is a good idea to build electric fences around human settlements.
B.It is impossible to find a solution to settle human-elephant conflict.
C.We should first reduce car accidents to prevent elephant accidents.
D.It is our duly to protect elephants rather than kill them.
23、The world will become a better place when we realize that everyone can have bad days and that we care enough and take actions. A Kansas fourth-grade teacher Rachel Harder recognized this, and she found an amazing way to help out both her students and their families.
A few years ago, Rachel attended a trauma (精神创伤) conference. She learned that some police stations partnered with schools. They could let teachers know when their students need help, patience or extra care.
A year after the conference, Rachel had a student with autism who frequently had difficult days. To support the student, Rachel told the student’s mom to simply text her “Handle with Care” to let her know when the student was experiencing difficult time. “When she would text me, I knew that her daughter needed some extra time and a quiet place to get help, not going to the playground for morning announcements (通告), so that the rest of her daughter’s day went well,” Rachel said.
The simple method was such a success that Rachel decided to send all of her students home with a note for their parents. It explained what the “Handle with Care” system was and how they could make use of it. In no time, the parents began to show their appreciation for Rachel’s unbelievable act of kindness.
But Rachel’s kindness didn’t end with her class. News spread of the amazing system, and teachers across the country began giving it a shot in their own class. Printed materials could be found on the school website, and the feedback (反馈) has been extremely positive!

【3】How did the parents treat Rachel’s system?
A.They paid no attention to it.
B.They changed it in daily use.
C.They accepted it thankfully.
D.They introduced it to others personally.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.A proper system.

24、Since 2008, hunters have illegally killed more than 3000 rhinos in South Africa. The International Union for Conservation of Nature warns that rhinos may die out by 2026. People who hunt and kill illegally are called poachers. The most effective way to watch for and prevent illegal hunting is from the air. However, piloted flights are too costly. Fortunately, some Spanish college students have invented a drone (无人机) that can observe more places than a plane.
Arnau Garcia is an aeronautical (航空学的) engineering student at the Polytechnic Institute of Catalonia, in Spain. He says observers from the air have trouble finding poachers when they hide under the trees. Mr. Garcia and other students have worked with the drone manufacturer HEMAV to help find the hidden poachers. They make it by using the thermal camera, which is especially sensitive to body heat. Even when the poachers keep still, it can also keep track of them.
The drone can fly in the wind up to 55 kilometers per hour. It has an autopilot system, so it memorizes the flight path. The drone also has a microphone, a video camera and a GPS system. These permit it to report accurately where a picture is taken. After each flight, the drone can bring back detailed information about where rhinos are found, the conditions of water and plants in the area, and the positions of suspected poachers.
Experts say the drone can fly as far as 70 kilometers from the base. It means that it could quickly observe large areas for poachers. However, the same search operation would take days for human observers. Thanks to the drone, many poachers have been caught and the number of rhinos is on the increase. In addition, HEMAV has received an increasing number of orders for the drone. Even South African national park officials attempt to fill the air with drones.
【1】What do we know about the drone? _____
A. It may get lost easily in the air.
B. It can’t work in the windy days.
C. It can offer detailed information.
D. It is useless when the poacher stays still.
【2】What’s the best title for the text? _____
A. How to make the drone work well
B. A new way to stop illegal hunting
C. The living conditions of rhinos are worrying
D. The drone helps save rhinos in South Africa
