21、From her lifeguard station at the end of the pool, Jessica noticed clouds forming, the wind picking up and the sky darkening. The pool manager announced over the loudspeaker that the pool is closing immediately, asking everyone to head to the safety of home before the storm hit.
All the swimmers had left by 3 :30 except Jessica's neighbor, eight-year-old Zack. Zack's mother had planned to pick him up after work, but the storm was coming fast. Jessica decided to drop Zack off on her way home, She taped a note for Ms Hill on the door of the pool office and headed out.
The minute Jessica and Zack left the parking lot, it was clear that this was no ordinary storm. Jessica said, “Zack, I'm going to take you to my house. We need to get inside right away, and your house is farther away than mine." She pressed the garage-door opener, but nothing happened. The electricity was out. The front door was only a few feet away, but the wind was so strong that Jessica and Zack had to fight their way into the house. Jessica held Zack's hand firmly. The door was heavy with the pressure of the wind. Finally, it opened, but it was blown out of Jessica's hand and hit the side of the house. The window broke into pieces. Jessica picked up Zack and threw the two of them inside; her only thought was to get to a safe place.
Remembering everything she could from her emergency training, Jessica took Zack to the completely dark basement. Jessica held Zack's trembling hand tightly. Feeling their way with great caution, they sat down in a corner finally. Outside, the lightning flashed, the thunder roared, and the furious wind howled, which threatened to put the world to an end. Feeling overwhelmingly scared, little Zack burst into tears, saying, “I miss my mom." Jessica held him in her arms, saying, “Honey, don't be afraid! Everything will be all right.”
After a final crash, the sound of the storm grew distant. Jessica sighing with relief, the pair hugged each other and shed tears of excitement.

22、An Aurora (极光) Adventure in Norway
Beyond the cottage windows the world is white and still. Snow-covered mountains stretch to the sea. It’s only 2 p.m., but already the light is fading, bathing the scene in a mysterious blue.
【1】 But instead of joining an organized and pricey aurora trip with a tour guide, I’m here on a DIY long weekend with friends.
We rented a riverside house in the tiny fishing village of Oldervik. 【2】 So we go back to the comfort of indoor space. The silence here is so complete that we can hear the gentle sound of snow falling from the roof.
Exciting activities, such as dog sledding and reindeer adventures, are easy to arrange. 【3】 But the striking beauty of the landscape and the sense of life being lived in slow motion, make us just want to stop for a while.
At Oldervik, it’s possible to catch the aurora anytime from September to April. The best time is from mid-November to mid-January, when the sun never appears. With cloudy skies we have no luck so far but on our last night, at the first sign of clouds clearing, we got into the car and hadn’t driven far when, with great excitement, we spotted a strange glowing arc (弧形) crossing the road like a milky rainbow. 【4】
And then it begins: beams of greeny-white light dance as if from spotlights on the ground. To the naked eye (肉眼), the lights are not the bright greens and blues cameras capture on long exposures, but it’s fascinating none the less. The temperature during this time has fallen to –10℃ but we don’t feel it as we lie on the ground, gazing up and never wanting to leave.
A.Sleep is effortless in this quiet land.
B.So are northern light excursions.
C.There’s little light pollution here, but the night is cloudy and a little cold.
D.When we hike south along the river, the moon hangs above the peaks in the sky.
E.It’s the appeal of the Arctic winter that has brought me to the very north of Norway in January.
F.The stars are against the blackest of skies, with white mountains on both sides glowing under a small piece of the moon.
23、
During the age of dinosaurs, a family of plants known as cycads grew all around the planet. They left fossils (化石) everywhere from Alaska to Antarctica, but their later generations have only lived in tropical and subtropical areas as Earth 's temperatures cooled.
Now, in an age of human-driven global warming, cycads are returning to one of their old living places. For the first time in about 60 million years, cycads have produced both male and female cones on the British Isles. It would be purely amazing, if it wasn't the direct result of the very same climate trends that are threatening the lives of tens of millions of people due to rising sea levels.
The cones belong to the species Cycas revoluta, which is planted at Ventnor Botanic Garden on the Isle of Wight, an island with average temperatures that are warmer than the rest of the United Kingdom.
Cycads are often found in indoor gardens at higher latitudes (纬度), but Ventnor 's plants are kept outside where it is usually too cold for them to develop the cones they need to produce new generations. One male cone appeared at the garden in the summer of 2012, but it remained single as there was no sign of any female partner.
“This is the first female cone out of doors in the United Kingdom,” the garden announced this month. “This presents us with an exciting opportunity to transfer pollen (花粉) and produce seeds for the first time in the United Kingdom for 60 million years.”
As average temperatures have risen over the past decades, the garden's cycads sensed an opportunity to put energy into cone production. Then they were further helped by strong heat waves in Europe this summer.
Cycads in their native environments are pollinated (授粉) by beetles, but the Ventnor staff will try to fertilize seeds by hand to grow the first new generation of these plants living in the British Isles.
While this experiment will be fascinating to plant-lovers, Ventnor curator Chris Kidd warned not to look at the cones as good news.
“This could be seen as exciting for British gardeners,” Kidd told CNN. “But if you can see the climate changing so obviously in such a short range of time, it's not that important when you consider what could be happening elsewhere in wider agriculture, gardening, and for populations on the planet.”
【1】Ventnor's cycads have produced both male and female cones on the British Isles mainly because___________.
A.the garden staffs have put energy into cone production
B.the Ventnor staff have transferred pollen and produce seeds
C.many plant-lovers develop the cones to produce new generations
D.average temperatures there are warmer than the rest of the U.K.
【2】What is Chris Kidd's attitude towards the reproduce of cycads?
A.Pessimistic. B.Confused. C.Positive. D.Optimistic.
【3】What does the passage imply?
A.Cycads are very precious.
B.The scientists in UK reproduced cycads.
C.The average temperature on our planet is getting higher.
D.We should protect cycads because they are going to die out.
24、Bamboo (竹子) is one of nature’s (自然) most surprising plants. Many people call this plant a tree, but it is a kind of grass.
Like other kinds of grass, a bamboo plant may be cut very low to the ground, but it will grow back very quickly. A Japanese scientist reported one bamboo plant which grew 1.5 metres (4 feet) in 24 hours! Bamboo grows almost everywhere in the world except Europe. There are more than 1, 000 kinds of bamboo.
Not all bamboo looks the same. Some bamboo plants are very thin. They may only grow to be a few centimeters wide while others may grow to more than 30 centimetres (1 foot) across. This plant also comes in different colors, from yellow to black to green.
Bamboo has been used to make many things such as hats and kitchen tools. Because it is strong, bamboo is also used to build buildings.
Many Asian countries have used bamboo for hundreds of years. They often use bamboo for buildings and supporting new buildings and bridges while they are being built.
