  • 21、China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I’ve found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it’s the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors --- silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.

It’s fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks. Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can’t provide.

Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.

My first ride home was orderly (守秩序的). To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn’t want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully.

Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.

I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.

【1】According to the author, why are bicycles still popular in China today?

A.Because they are traditional and safe.

B.Because they are convenient and inexpensive.

C.Because they are colorful and available.

D.Because they are fast and environment friendly.

【2】The author decided to buy a bicycle because he intended __________.

    A.to ride it for fun

    B.to use it for transport

    C.to experience local culture

    D.to improve his riding skills

【3】How did the author feel about his street crossing?

    A.It was boring.

    B.It was difficult.

    C.It was lively.

    D.It was wonderful.

【4】Which of the following best describes the author’s biking experience

A.The author enjoyed showing off his biking skills.

B.The author was annoyed by the air while riding.

C.The author was praised by the other bikers.

D.The author took great pleasure in biking.

  • 22、2012 was one of the hardest years I have ever known because I lost my husband. For sea-eras months, I found it hard to write, think, eat or take pleasure in anything; I could not imagine what it would be like to feel happy again; I could not find any hope or purpose.

I cannot remember the reason why one Monday morning I decided to go to a hot yoga studio in east London, where I signed up for a 3 O-day trial. I do not remember the class or how much I sweated. What I do know is that I started going to hot yoga every day, Sometimes, when my head felt as if it might collapse (崩溃), I went twice a day. I skipped parties, left social events and got up early to attend. There was something about the hot room that held me together, stopping all the dark thoughts inside my mind.

I chose the Bikram method of hot yoga: It has a set of 26 postured and two breathing exercises performed in heat over a period of 90 minutes. This form of yoga was founded by Bikram Choudhury. In 2015, he failed in an attempt to copyright (取得版权) his method. Many practitioners (从业人员) believe that Bikram is not real yoga. Some question the limita-lions of just 26 postured. Others wonder why the class has to be performed before a wall of mirrors. However, something in those 26 postured freed my mind, dragged me out of my thoughts and back into the present. I was able to focus on how my body behaved differently each day.

【1】What happened to the author in 2012?

    A.She succeeded in writing.

B.She went to the yoga studio once every day.

C.She attached importance to her yoga classes.

D.She was sorry to skip parties to go to the yoga studio.

【3】How did yoga help the author?

    A.It helped her make money.

B.It helped her feel more focused.

C.at helped her get to know its founder.

D.It helped her practice her performance skills.

【4】Where is this text most likely from?

    A.A health magazine.

    B.A travel brochure.

    C.A research paper.

    D.Science fiction.

  • 23、   The sudden outbreak of the novel coronavirus(新冠状病毒)left an uncommon threat. We don’t know how bad it will be, nor do we know for how long it will spread. But we do know that it has already infected more than 11,998,020 people and killed many around the world. It has also caused serious economic damage. We need to adapt our responses to different countries and different parts of the same country in order to limit damage. Using data well is essential to such a successful response.

Data is key to all successful public health programs. In Arrian, we raised tobacco taxes and made all indoor public places smoke-free. Smoking rates declined at first but then the decline stopped. Because we had a tracking system in place, we realized that progress had stopped. So, we produced strong and direct no tobacco ads to the public. Our program quickly reduced adult and teenager smoking, preventing more than 100,000 deaths.

Every country facing the coronavirus disease needs to strengthen their data systems to track diseases, investigate skillfully and respond fast and successfully. Fast action will save lives and save money. But building the capacity to do this isn’t free. It will cost about $1 to $2 per person per year for at least 10 years-at least $30 billion. That’s a lot of money for public health, but it’s a tiny part of the amount lost when we don’t know what we need to know about health threats.

Getting the data right is hardly quick and never easy, but it is always very important if we want to respond successfully, limit spread, and protect our communities and economy.

1Which of the following can best describe the measure taken in Arrian?

    A.proud B.unpopular C.modest D.effective

2Why does the author talk about smoking in Paragraph 2?

A.To warn us that smoking is harmful.

B.To suggest us how to reduce smoking.

C.To show the significant role of data.

    D.To protect people’s physical health.

3What is the author’s opinion on the building of the capacity of fast response?

A.It is too expensive and many countries cannot afford it.

B.It is worthwhile and necessary to develop such a capacity.

C.It supports communities and save lives and money.

D.It requires a tiny part of the amount lost by threats.

4What could be the best title for the text?

    A.The secret of widespread threat

    B.The secret of successful response

    C.The secret of uncommon disease

    D.The secret of right data

  • 24、College debt is becoming as much of a problem for Americans close to retirement as it is for new graduates. There are now about 8. 7 million Americans aged over 50 who are still paying off college loans. They took out either to pay for an education for their children or themselves. Their debt is growing fast, increasing by about half since 2017 to a total of $ 370 billion — an average of $ 40,900 per borrower. In2019, roughly $4.9 billion was deducted(扣除) right from retirees' Social Security income.

Part of the blame falls on the federally backed PLUS program, said Tara Siegel Bernard in The New York Times. "Parent PLUS loans", which have few application requirements other than a basic credit check, have broadened access to capital for many parents. But the "loans can be unforgiving". William and Kate Schweizer "didn't want their two daughters to begin their adult lives burdened with college debt". So they borrowed $220,000 for their schooling. Increasingly they had trouble paying. Now their debt has ballooned to $500,000. The consequences of defaulting(拖欠 ) are serious: "The government can take their wages and Social Security."

Unfortunately, President Biden's $6 trillion budget doesn't offer much assistance, said Eric Levitz in NYMag. com. During his campaign, "Biden called for forgiving $10, 000 in federal student loan debt for every borrower" among other ways to ease the college debt burden. But the chances of passing such measures through Congress are slim.

Don't bankrupt yourself for your kids, said Beth Akers in USA Today. The safer option to pay for college is "a student loan taken out in your child's name". A federal student loan — not a private one — can protect borrowers through income-driven repayment programs. There is also a better chance that a loan forgiveness program could materialize to help out student borrowers. And remember that "if you overextend yourself financially to make a college dream come true for your child, you are taking away your ability to be your child's financial backstop."

【1】How does the author illustrate his point in Paragraph 1?

    A.By listing statistics.

    B.By giving examples.

    C.By making comparisons.

    D.By using quotes.

【2】What is the disadvantage of Parent PLUS loans?

    A.They have demanding requirements.

B.They can trap parents in financial crises.

C.They are not enough to cover college costs.

D.They set limits on how much one can borrow.

【3】What does Eric Levitz think of President Biden's $ 6 trillion budget?

    A.It is flexible.

    B.It is tight.

    C.It is beneficial.

    D.It is impractical.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

A.Americans Are Burdened by College Debt

B.Student Loans: A Stepping Stone to College

C.Lessons in Finance Help Repay Student Loans

D.Debt: College Costs Swallow Retirement Nest Eggs

A merchant sent his son to learn the Secret of Happiness from the wisest of men. The young man wandered through the desert for forty days until he reached a beautiful castle at the top of a mountain. There lived the sage that the young man was looking for.

However, instead of finding a holy man, our hero entered a room and saw a great deal of activity; merchants coming and going, people chatting in the corners, a small orchestra playing sweet melodies, and there was a table laden with the most delectable dishes of that part of the world.

The wise man talked to everybody, and the young man had to wait for two hours until it was time for his audience. The Sage listened attentively to the reason for the boy’s visit, but told him that at that moment he did not have the time to explain to him the Secret of Happiness. He suggested that the young man take a stroll around his palace and come back in two hours’ time.

“However, I want to ask you a favor,” he added, handling the boy a teaspoon, in which he poured two drops of oil. “While you walk, carry this spoon and don’t let the oil spill.”

The young man began to climb up and down the palace staircases, always keeping his eyes fixed on the spoon. At the end of two hours he returned to the presence of the wise man.

“So,” asked the sage, “did you see the Persian tapestries hanging in my dining room? Did you see the garden that the Master of Gardeners took ten years to create? Did you notice the beautiful parchments in my library?”

Embarrassed, the young man confessed that he had seen nothing. His only concern was not to spill the drops of oil that the wise man had entrusted to him.

“So, go back and see the wonders of my world,” said the wise man. “You can’t trust a man if you don’t know his house.”
