21、Batteries are extremely useful. Many ordinary household items are powered by single-use batteries including TV remotes, toys, flashlights, and even smoke detectors. But what happens when the batteries are used up and have to be replaced? Many of them end up in the trash where the chemicals can get into the soil causing environmental damage. In fact in Australia, 97 percent of single-use batteries end up in landfills.
While batteries can be traditionally recycled, this involves using high heat to melt the metals that can then be reused. The method doesn’t allow for the repurposing of other elements that actually have to be mined. It is allowing valuable resources to go to waste.
Envirostream — a part of the battery recycling company Lithium Australia — came up with an innovative way to turn old batteries into plant fertilizer. While some of the chemicals in batteries are poisonous, the company engineered a new method that takes the micronutrients like zinc and manganese oxide out of the alkaline (碱性的) batteries by crushing (碎) them and removing the poisonous elements. Lithium Australia has tried to find a solution for these waste batteries that is better for the environment and creates better value.
The company began field trials in 2020, testing a fertilizer supplement made from the upcycled batteries on wheat and found that it compared well to commercial fertilizers. After that, they tested the fertilizer in soil that was lacking in the minerals. Now, the fertilizer has been successfully applied to growing tomatoes, avocados, and cotton crops.
Going from powering remotes to powering plants completes a cycle for elements that come from the earth to then go back to the earth. Recycling batteries for useful components and keeping them out of landfills is good for the planet.

22、 In geometry, architecture and art, a unique number is believed to be the secret to perfection. That is the golden ratio, or 1:1.618, a mathematical proportion.
The first recorded mention of the golden ratio in history dates back to 300 BC. The Greek mathematician Euclid called it the "extreme ratio". Its actual value is 1.6180339887498484820…But it's usually rounded up to 1. 618. At the beginning of the 20th century, the American mathematician Mark Barr gave it the name phi, pronounced fee, after the Greek sculptor Phidias.
The golden ratio exists when a line is divided into two parts and the longer section(a)divided by the smaller section(b)is equal to the entire length of the line(a+b)divided by the longer section(a).
Once you start to notice the golden ratio, you will see it everywhere. Leonardo da Vinci is often associated with the golden ratio. His most famous painting, the Mona Lisa, seems to contain several examples of this geometric proportion.
Stephen Silver, who has worked for big studios such as Disney, Warner Brothers and Sony Pictures Animation, has designed the characters for popular animated television shows such as Kim Possible and Danny Phantom. He shares the secret of how to create perfect designs. "Characters with an even design are likely to lack movement," he says. "They feel ordinary and quickly lose appeal.” Instead, he applies the golden ratio to break up proportions to create "more contrast and variation in shape", which makes his characters come alive. The golden ratio prevents him designing characters that are too evenly spaced.
Silver isn't the only graphic artist who thinks the golden ratio is special. Golden geometry can be found in the Pepsi, Twitter, and Disney logos. Next time you draw a picture or design a logo, you can try it out!
【1】Who named the golden ratio phi?
A.Euclid B.Mark Barr. C.Phidias. D.Leonardo da Vinci.
【2】Which of the following best describes the golden ratio?
A.a/b=(a+b)/a B.a/b=a/(a+b)
C.a/b=b/(a+b) D.a/b= (a+b)/b
【3】What's Silver's attitude to the golden ratio?
A.Skeptical. B.Cautious C.Positive D.Negative.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.The secret to the perfection B.The golden ratio in the art.
C.The famous character designer. D.How to be a famous artist.
23、When an editor called to ask if I could photograph a story about fireflies in Mexico. I didn’t check my schedule before I said yes. I’d seen these insects light up the forests in Tlaxcala once before, and I jumped at the chance to go back.
While studying, I began exploring Mexico, crossing the country several times by bus. Now I work as a photojournalist in Mexico and along the border, documenting desperate situations that face everyday Mexicans. Though necessary and important, news stories don’t reflect the Mexico that I fell for and that is home to so many people I love. A task focused on the country’s natural beauty was a welcome reprieve for me.
I had three nights to film the magical scene in the forest. According to our guides, visitors are usually not allowed to photograph the fireflies because the presence of artificial light from electronics can affect their habits. As I started shooting, I adjusted my exposures constantly to account for the fading light. In order to get the composition that I wanted, I placed my tripod (三脚架) on a steep, rocky path and had to steady it during the long exposures. Normally this wouldn’t be a big deal, but the fireflies were very interested in the camera and, by extension, in me. I stood completely still while they were all over me-my arms, my hair, my face. From what I observed, peak (高峰时期的) firefly presence lasts for only about 20 minutes each night, so I had time for just a few tries.
On the last night everything came together. The weather cooperated. I had improved my method for focusing and composing photos in the dark with quick flashes from a powerful flashlight—and I’d grown accustomed to insects on my face.
I was rewarded with the image you see here. Each dot of light is one of several bursts that a firefly makes as it travels within a 30- second exposure. You can track the insects’ paths: Some make small circles, like those in the bottom center of the frame, while others move steadily in one direction or another.

24、Smoking in your own home in Thailand may now be considered a crime, if the smoke is considered harmful to other people in the house.
The new law, Family Protection and Development Promotion Act, aiming at controlling smoking at home which might be hazardous for others' health living under the same roof, was initiated by the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security and was announced in the Royal Gazette on May 22, 2019. It came into force on August 20.
According to the center for research and knowledge management for tobacco control, at the Faculty of Medical Science of Mahidol University, there are about 4.9 million households where one or more family members smoke. An average of 10.3 million people have unwittingly(不知不觉地) become passive smokers because they’ve been breathing smoke at home. Scientific studies show that passive smokers are at greater risk of being affected by cancer. Of 75 child patients from houses where smoking is practiced, 76% of them were found to have nicotine traces in their urine(尿液), with 43% of them having nicotine content exceeding(超过) permissible levels.
Smoking at home also “may lead to physical or emotional violence” because of aggressiveness when there is a lack of smoking, and might as well ruin relationships between smokers and non-smoker family members.
According to the new law, anyone who thinks they are affected by domestic smoking can report to government departments concerned so that officials will be sent to investigate and take legal action against the smokers. Once convicted(证明有罪的), the court may order a person to receive treatment to quit smoking in an attempt to protect the person's family.
