二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、“Serena, don’t forget your promise to me that you will mow Mrs Martin’s yard this weekend,” said Dad. “Don't let me down.”

Serena was the oldest child in the family, and one of her tasks was to mow their yard. Mrs Martin, their elderly neighbor, was unable to take care of her yard, so Serena's dad had volunteered Serena for this job. Since Mrs Martin’s yard was not very big, Serena knew the job would go quickly. However, she still resented her dad’s promise.

“Why didn’t you ask me first?” Serena had complained.

“Did you ask me first when you volunteered me to be in the school festival last fall?” asked Serena’s father.

“Well, no, I didn't ask you first, but you would have done those things anyway. You're always willing to help.”

“I try when I can,” Dad answered. “Serena, we have known Mrs Martin for a very long time. She has often helped our family. Now we can do something for her. Besides, the feeling you get from helping someone makes you wonder who is really helping whom."

“I don’t know, Dad,” said Serena. “The only feeling I get from mowing our yard is tired.”

“Just you wait and see,” said Dad.

After breakfast, Serena made her way to Mrs Martin’s yard. She was good at her job and soon had Mrs Martin’s yard looking tidy. Mrs Martin came outside with a big glass of orange juice and offered it to her. Serena stopped her work and thankfully enjoyed the drink, while Mrs Martin talked to her about all of the flowers in her yard. Seeing the joy in Mrs Martin’s eyes, Serena began to understand how much the yard meant to Mrs Martin.

After finishing her drink, Serena returned to work with a new attitude. A warm feeling began to spread through her body. Her dad was right. It was hard to tell who was helping whom!

  • 22、   “I’m so bored!” It’s a typical complaint by teens in every era, but one that’s growing more common for U. S. adolescents, especially girls.

New research at Washington State University has found that boredom is rising year after year for teens in 8th, 10th, and 12th grades, with greater increases for girls than boys. “We were surprised to see that boredom is increasing at a more rapid pace for girls than boys across all grades,” said Elizabeth Weybright, WSU researcher of adolescent development, who shared the findings in the Journal of Adolescent Health.

Weybright’s project tracked a decade of adolescent responses to a question about boredom in a nationwide survey. Adolescents were asked to rate their response to the question “I am often bored,” on a five-point scale. Weybright and her colleagues analyzed the results over time and across grades, between 2008, when the question was first asked, and 2017.

The team’s research revealed that boredom rose within and across grades for much of the last decade. “I wanted to find out when adolescents are most likely to experience boredom,” said Weybright.

When compared across grades, boredom appears to peak in 10th grade for boys and in 8th grade for girls. However, looking across time with grade levels combined, boys’ boredom levels rose 1.6 percent every year on average, while girls’ boredom levels rose by 1.7 percent on average. In every grade, girls’ boredom levels showed steeper rises than boys.

While Weybright’s study doesn’t explore the causes of rising boredom, she notes that boredom may be associated with sensation-seeking and depression, which are rising among U. S. teens. At the same time, digital media use has also been increasing, doubling for 12th graders from 2006 to 2012. Within this same timeframe, other researchers have seen decreases in adolescents going out with friends and spending more time alone. “Perhaps boredom is simply one more indicator of adolescent dissatisfaction with how their time is spent. Apparently, much can be done to handle this adolescent issue,”Weybright stated in the paper.

1How did Weybright feel at her findings of the survey?

    A.Astonished. B.Bored.

    C.Excited. D.Expected.

2How long did Weybright’s project last?

    A.1 year. B.8 years.

    C.10 years. D.17 years.

3What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.Digital media is the major blame for adolescents’ boredom

B.It is most likely that adolescence is a stage of dissatisfaction.

C.Adolescents of the last ten years have been living in great depression.

D.Time spent on the digital media probably doesn’t bring satisfaction.

4What might be discussed in the paragraph that follows?

A.When girls are most likely to experience boredom.

B.What might give rise to boredom in adolescents.

C.Whether boredom is more harmful than digital media.

D.How adolescent boredom can be dealt with.

  • 23、Can you be too beautiful? It is hardly a problem that most of us have to bother—as much as we might like to dream that it were the case.

Yet the blessings and curses of beauty have been a long-standing interest in psychology. Do those blessed with shiny faces and an attractive body live in a cloud of appreciation—or does it sometimes pay to be ordinary?

Combing through decades of findings, social psychologists Lisa Slattery Walker and Tonya Frevert at the University of North Carolina at Charlone have reviewed all the evidence to date and their conclusions are not what you might expect.

At the most basic level, beauty might be thought to carry a kind of halo (光环) around it: we see that someone has one good quality, and by association, our deep mind may assume that they have other good ones too.

Even in the courts, a pleasing appearance can work its magic. Attractive criminals are likely to get less strict sentences, or to escape punishment entirely: attractive plaintiffs (原告), meanwhile, are more likely to win their case and get bigger financial settlements, “it’s an effect seen everywhere,” says Walker.

But if beauty pays in most circumstances, there are still situations where it can have opposite results. While attractive men may be considered better leaders, for instance, hidden sexist prejudices can work against attractive women, making them less likely to be hired for high-level jobs that require power. And as you might expect good-looking people of both sexes run into envy—one study found that if you are interviewed by someone of the same sex, they may be less likely to employ you if they judge that you are more attractive than they are.

More worryingly, being beautiful or handsome could harm your medical care. We tend to link good looks to health, meaning that illnesses are often taken less seriously when they affect the good-looking. When treating people for pain, for instance, doctors tend to take less care over the more attractive people tend to move further away from a beautiful woman on the pathway—perhaps as a mark of respect, but still making interaction more distant. “Attractiveness can convey more power over visible space—but that in tum can make others feel they can’t approach that person,” says Frevert. Interestingly, the online dating website OKCupid recently reported that people with the most beautiful pictures are less likely to find dates than those with less perfect pictures.

Ultimately, Frevert points out that focusing too much on your appearance can itself be harmful if it creates stress and anxiety—even for those already blessed with good looks. “If you are crazy about attractiveness, it may affect your experience and interactions,” she says. It’s an outdated saying, but no amount of beauty can make up for a bad personality. As the writer Dorothy Parker put it so elegantly: “Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone.”

【1】From paragraph 1, we can learn that________.

A.some may be bothered by their unattractive appearance

B.most people are not afraid of being too beautiful

C.we might always dream about being bothered by others

D.being too beautiful can be a problem bothering everyone

【2】Which is the benefit for beautiful people?

A.An attractive plaintiff has more chances to get away with punishment.

B.Women with pleasing appearance will always be considered as better leaders.

C.Good-looking people are often regarded as having many good qualities.

D.Beautiful criminals are more likely to persuade the judge and win the case.

【3】What can be inferred from OKCupid’s finding?

A.People with perfect pictures will find dates sooner or later.

B.Less attractive women arc lonely because of their appearances.

C.We may feel more excited to approach those with attractive appearances.

D.Don’t use perfect pictures when trying to find dates online.

【4】What might be the best title for the passage?

    A.Negative Sides of Beauty

    B.Sexist Prejudice

    C.Blessed with Beauty

    D.Beauty vs Ugliness

  • 24、Drinking coffee — particularly two to three cups a day — is not only linked with a lower risk of heart disease but also with living longer, according to studies being presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 71st Annual Scientific Session.

“Because coffee can quicken heart rate, some people worry that drinking it could lead to or worsen certain heart issues. But our data suggest that daily coffee intake shouldn’t be discouraged, but rather included as a part of a healthy diet for people with and without heart disease,” said Peter M. Kistler, head of the research.

Kistler and his team used data from the UK BioBank, a large-range prospective database with health information from over half a million people who were followed for at least 10 years. For the first study, researchers examined data from 382,535 individuals without known heart disease. In general, having two to three cups of coffee a day was related to the greatest benefit, translating to a 10% — 15% lower risk of developing heart disease, heart failure, a heart rhythm problem, or dying for any reason.

The second study included 34,279 individuals who had some form of cardiovascular disease at baseline. Of the 24,111 people included in the analysis who had an arrhythmia, drinking coffee had a connection with a lower risk of death.

In a third study, researchers looked at whether there were any differences in the relationship between coffee and cardiovascular disease depending on whether someone drank instant or ground coffee or caffeinated or decaf. They found, once again, two to three cups a day to be linked with the lowest risk of arrhythmia and heart failure regardless of whether they had ground or instant coffee, but there are no cardiovascular benefits to choosing decaf over caffeinated coffees.

However, coffee intake was based on self-report through a questionnaire fielded at study entry. Researchers were unable to control for dietary factors and participants were mostly white, so additional studies are needed.

【1】Why does drinking coffee concern people according to Kistler?

    A.It may disorder heart rate.

    B.It may cause heart diseases.

C.It may increase high risk of death.

    D.It may worsen patients’ condition.

【2】How did researchers get the results of the study?

    A.By analyzing data.

    B.By doing experiments.

    C.By introducing a database.

    D.By referring to another study.

【3】What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?

    A.The research has some limitations.

B.The result seems far from satisfactory.

C.Ground coffee is the best choice for people.

D.Decaf has the same benefits as caffeinated coffees.

【4】What is the purpose of the text?

    A.To solve a problem.

    B.To give practical advice.

    C.To present a research result.

    D.To recommend a balanced diet.
