21、 In the last 50 years, sea surface temperatures around Antarctica have risen by 1-2°C, which is more than twice the global average.
Loss of species
Global warming could basically change the ecosystem, leading to the loss of some species. Sharks are going to arrive in Antarctica as long as the warming trend continues, a bit more slowly than crabs-crabs are going to get there first, but once they do get there they are able to eat the organisms that live there.
Professor Wilga said the arrival of sharks and shell-crushing bony fishes would lead to great changes in the number and proportions(比例)of species found there.
Shrimp, ribbon worms and brittle stars are likely to be the most attackable to population declines. Animals living in shallow water in Antarctica are unique on Earth today because they evolved(进化)in a very cold environment over tens of millions of years.
Extreme conditions
In the course of a process we call Antarctic cooling that started about 40 million years ago, all major seafloor predators such as sharks and crabs went extinct in Antarctica because they were not able to deal with these extreme conditions.
However, today global warming is removing barriers to invasions and we’ve seen recently that crabs, especially king crabs, are on the doorstep of Antarctica-they can potentially re-invade the shallow waters if warming continues.
Urgent local and global actions are needed to protect this last environment and measures are needed to stop alien species being brought in through ships.
Strange creatures
Animals that live on the seafloor of Antarctica are some of the strangest creatures on Earth. The extreme cold and darkness has presented huge challenges to marine life over the passage of time, leading to the evolution of fish equipped with anti- freeze proteins in their blood.
【1】How will these alien species affect the ecosystem in Antarctica?

B.They will change the numbers and proportions of species in Antarctica.
C.The sea surface temperature of Antarctica will rise more quickly.

23、These days more and more people tend to buy man-made trees for Christmas, because they think they are good for the environment. But is it true? Which is more environmentally friendly—real or man-made? The simple answer is: it depends.
Real trees that still have their roots have little carbon footprint (碳足迹). They can be planted, brought inside for the Christmas period and then replanted.
But things are more complex for other trees.
Britain’s Carbon Trust estimate (估计) that a two-meter tall tree that doesn’t have roots has a carbon footprint of between 3.5 kg CO2e and16 kg CO2e depending on whether it is burnt—which is less polluting——or finds its way to a landfill (垃圾填埋场). “Unfortunately, we still see a lot of trees going into landfill,” says Sophie Neuberg, a member of Friends of the Earth. “And that’s very bad for the environment because they break down very slowly and create methane which is a greenhouse gas.”
The picture for plastic trees isn’t so encouraging. The Carbon Trust estimate a carbon footprint of around 40 kg CO2e for a two-meter tree, but its beauty is that it can be reused.
“It’s a good idea to get a good quality one that you can use for many years. Someone I know has had their plastic tree for 20 years,” Neuberg says.
This tendency toward reuse of plastic treess is supported by research published by the American Christmas Tree Association (ACTA) who estimate that 85% of US families with a man-made tree will reuse it and that on average man-made trees are reused for 11 years.
Jami Warner, director of ACTA repeats Neuberg’s advice. “Quality man-made trees are very easy to break down and very easy to store,” Wrner says. “If you take good care of it you can use it season after season or you can donate it to a good organisation.”
However, if you want a truly green Christnnas, you can simply replace the tree with the plants already in your house and decorate them for Christmas.
【1】Why do people tend to buy man-made Christmas trees now?
A.They think it costs less.
B.They find it more convenient.
C.They consider it more decorative.
D.They believe it is more eco-friendly.
【2】What is the worst way to deal with a used real tree?
A.Burning it.
B.Reusing it.
C.Throwing it.
D.Replanting it.
【3】Which of the following may Jami Warner agree with?

If you are coming to Bondi Beach, a suburb of Sydney, try to leave your car at home. Public transport in Sydney is pretty dismal but parking can be even more of a problem at the beach.
Bus Service
All buses from the city start from Circular Quay and the ride to Bondi Beach takes 45 minutes. The bus may be numbered 380 or 333 with the destination showing North Bondi, Dover Heights, Watsons Bay or Bondi Beach. Together this is called “the 380 bus” and all buses go to Bondi Beach.
Other Bus Adventures
Apart from the well-known 380, lots of other bus services wind their way through the back streets. Bus drivers, trying to be helpful, will not suggest any of these routes for fear your trip will take longer or you will become lost. But here are a few worth trying:
The 389 bus runs every 10 minutes all day (20 minutes on Sundays and 30 min after 8pm daily) and goes through the historic back streets of Paddington, following the route of an old trolley car service. You will pass a whole street of coffee shops in East Sydney, past the gates of the DarlinghurstGaol, through streets lined with terrace houses (联排公寓), then on to Bondi Junction. The 389 travels along GlenayrAenue at Bondi Beach which is a long block but a level walk to the beach.
The 400 Bus goes to the University of NSW, The Prince of Wales Hospital, Eastgardens and the Airport. This bus runs every five minutes on weekdays and every 10 minutes on weekends. Service are less frequent after 7pm and finish around 11pm. For shopperholics, the 400 takes you directly to the Eastgardens Shopping Centre. Every 20 minutes a 400 bus continues on to the Domestic and International airport terminals.
The 380 bus to Watsons Bay terminates at North Bondi, but some 380 buses continue on to Watsons Bay, which is a great excursion for tourists. At Watsons Bay there is famous lookout, great views of the harbour and the ocean, a hotel and several cafes, a 30-minute walk to South Head, other bus routes and even a ferry service back to Circular Quay.
