21、Human demands for natural resources have doubled in less than 50 years and are now beyond what the earth can provide, a report warned. If humans carry on like this, we will need two earths by 2030. The population of wildlife has fallen by 60% in thirty years.
The report said British people are consuming (消耗) far more than the earth can deal with. If everyone lived such a lifestyle, humans would need 2.75 planets to survive. People are now living lifestyles which would require 1.5 planets, though there are great differences between rich and poor nations.
Researchers studied the global change in land use and water consumption. The UK comes 31st in a list of countries based on “ecological footprint (生态足迹)” that measures how much land and sea each person needs to produce the resources they consume and to absorb (吸收) the wastes. The UK has fallen down from 15th place in the last report two years ago to 3lst place, but the WWF believes it is an increase in other countries’ efforts rather than a reduction in the UK’s use of resources.
Ireland has the 10th highest ecological footprint, while the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Denmark, Belgium and the US are the five worst countries for over-consumption of resources. The study suggests if the expected global population of 9.2 billion in 2050 were to eat a Malaysian diet, 1.3 planets would be needed but if everyone were to eat an Italian diet, humans would need almost two planets. Those countries that can provide the highest quality of life using the lowest amount of resources will not only serve the global interest, but will be the leaders in a resource-limited world.

22、 In the delightful presence of adorable little things, it isn’t uncommon to be conquered by a desire to shout “Kawaii”. In Western culture, we’ve come to think of kawaii as a synonym for cute. In Japan, where the kawaii aesthetic (审美) has been its own pop culture phenomenon for decades, the word is a bit more complex.
Nittono, a kawaii researcher, says the Japanese word kawaii was originally an affective adjective that expressed one’s feelings toward an object. “In Japanese, we can say ‘feel kawaii,’” he adds. Visually, kawaii is tied to what researchers call baby schema—a large head, round face, and big eyes—but kawaii involves the other senses too. In a paper published in the journal Universal Access, researchers reported that people also label certain sounds as cute, and those sounds tend to be high pitched, like the chirp (鸣叫) of a baby bird.
Kawaii isn’t always what we would traditionally describe as cute, either. Ugly or strange- looking things can also bring about kawaii feelings, a concept referred to as kimo-kawaii, or “gross cute.”
Put simply, Nittono says, kawaii is the “cute emotion” you experience in the presence of something that elicits that emotion.
Kawaii doesn’t just make us feel good — it changes our behavior. Kawaii is what causes you to pinch (捏) a baby’s cheeks or snuggle (紧抱) a puppy. What’s more, kawaii not only makes you want to physically embrace the cute thing, but also enables a natural need to protect it. Kawaii also influences our feelings and behavior in other ways. It has a calming and healing effect, for instance. It also makes us soft — more easily influenced and open to requests. “I think kawaii, or cute feelings, reminds us of human connection that we sometimes forget,” says Nittono.

A.To explain the word kawaii.
B.To praise the effect of kawaii.

D.To argue about a culture phenomenon.
【2】What do we know about Kawaii?
A.It generally involves different senses.
B.It often conveys human’s negative feelings.

23、Beating Burnout and Compassion Fatigue in the New Year
This year has continued to bring many of us closer to the pain, suffering and exhaustion of those experiencing burnout and compassion fatigue (疲倦). There is no doubt that 2021 has been filled with additional challenges. 【1】
The data is clearly showing that our workforce shares feelings of burnout. A recent Gallup report indicated that 67% of us feel burned out either some or most of the time. At an organizational level, Hogan reports that burned out employees are 18% less productive and 2.6 times more likely to be actively seeking a different job.
Fatigue and burnout arise not when we fail to get sufficient rest but when we fail to appreciate the moments of purpose and joy in our lives.
There are a few myths around burnout and compassion fatigue:
Myth 1: Burnout is an individual's problem.
Many people believe that burnout is about an individual who needs to “figure it out”. 【2】 Team structure offers critical support and leaders should create environment where team burnout is addressed.
Myth 2: 【3】
Surprisingly, the individuals most likely to experience burnout are committed employees and leaders who love their job and are highly engaged. These top performers are the people you are most likely to lose.
Myth 3: People who experience burnout are just less resilient.
Research shows a correlation between higher levels of resilience (复原力) and lower levels of burnout. 【4】 But resilience looks very different now from five years ago, and my guess is that it will continue to shift.
If 2021 has taught us anything, it is that we cannot separate burnout from our emotions, whether they may be fear, anger, shame or guilt. 【5】
A.While fatigue is more sudden and results from carrying the pain and suffering of others, what we experience is similar.
B.Burnout results from lack of responsibility.
C.Burnout hurts individuals' enthusiasm and passion.
D.At this point, burnout and compassion fatigue has expanded into many aspects of our lives.
E.But burnout occurs at different levels and is the result from challenges to individuals, teams and organizations.
F.At one point, people believed resilience was established by “sucking it up”, or “just staying positive”.
G.And the path forward requires us to deepen the relationship with feelings of joy, passion, pride and fulfillment.
